The members have said that Aya is a song that compares to bidding their lover farewell coolly, with the pain of a breakup being similar to that of pulling out a rotten tooth (that's a line in the song). 'Aya' is Korean onomatopoeia, similar to 'Ouch' in English. About the controversy regarding the song and performance - The people who claim to be offended can't even figure out if the cultures being appropriated are Indian, Middle Eastern or Arabic. I am Indian myself, and while I see some vaguely Mughal influence, it's pretty obviously not a mockery of Indian culture. If the imagery is that much of an amalgamation, how can Mamamoo have been appropriating a culture? I think the concept is inspired more by the exotic, fantastical vibes of films like Aladdin. As for accusations regarding the mosque-like structure in their MAMA performance, the rearrangement of the song is clearly declared 'Agrabah' version. Agrabah is a fictional place from Aladdin, that was not a mosque. Mamamoo has made their fair share of mistakes in the past and apologized, but it's obviously peoples' choice to accept that apology. The controversies and accusations around the Travel era, however, are baseless in my opinion PS. - I love your Mamamoo reactions! I'm here at 40 views lmao

Aya is a word koreans use when they're hurt. Like ouch. And this song is about plucking out something toxic, as they portray a toxic relationship as a bad tooth. It hurts, yet feel relieved when it's over. Also they picture themselves as women who deserve better that's why the lyrics said "you insulted me" and the beat dropped like that. I'm Japanese and I grew up listening to a song called "Nada Sou Sou". It's an Okinawan-style song about being filled with tears while missing someone. Mamamoo does a cover of this in their Japanese album and it's soooo good. It gives me goosebumps, and Moonbyul sings quite a lot in it. There doesn't seem to be a live performance or music video for the Mamamoo version, but Solar does a solo Korean cover music video, which is pretty emotional. This is a long-winded way of me requesting for you to react to either version because I don't think I've seen anyone react to that song. Thank you.

I am a fan of exo since 2012 and a fan of mamamoo for 1.5 years now. Exo is the most awarded kpop group and even when their company sucks in promoting them they are still winning and breaking records after 9 years being active. They won sooooo many awards and break soooo many records. It is said that if you are in korea and u don't know exo, you are an spy. Lol. Exo is known as vocal kings mostly bcz of their live performances. They broke the record of the fastest concert tickets being sold out. Within 0.4 second. Then hey broke their own record again and agian and they are n1 now. With the record of only 0.2 second. Exo is known as nation pick, nation boyfriend, vocal kings (even they were said as kings of kpop for so long. I don't say it bcz we all know that now bts is the most famous boygroup and exo is n2. Still i lve both of them and follow boh of them since their debut but exo is my ult kpop group. It is mostly bcz exo were in a loooot of hardships. They lost 3 members in their 2 first years of debut. People said they should disband but they broke he biggest record and stronger than before. Became artists of the year and the best album if the year for 5 yeaes straight. And then one of the members can't be active in korea bcz he is one of the biggest chinese artists and after korea and chinas problems they don't alow them to be active in korea. Since 2018. Now members are going to military and coming back. But theh are still breaking unbelievable records as solo artists!!!! Why i say if u like mamamoo u will also like exo probably? Exo is known as vocal kings specially in live performance and mamamoo is known as vocal queens specially live. They both are sooo tallented and sexy and hot on stage. But bunch of creak-heads off stage. Lol. I mean... Exo is one of the seniors which all groups have so much respect for them and say they are their role model. They may be beagles but the crush isn't puppy love. The fandom motto is Never Letting Go. I'm so done with whatever the haters and self-appointed culture guardians have to say about MMM that I haven't paid any attention to whatever controversy the MV has stirred up. Rather than looking for reasons to be offended I find it much more interesting and fruitful to ask questions about their artistic intent and see where that takes me. Aya hits you with the old school orientalist set & costume design right off the bat and then Hwasa, Solar and Moonbyul portray outlandish fictional characters that don't fit the orientalist concept at all. So my questions were: why the design elements that look like a throwback to the sensual, exotic fantasies of western artists from the 19th and early 20th century such as the Ballets Russes production of Scheherazade, why the additional role play by the 3 members, why doesn't Wheein have a crazy, non-orientalist role of her own, and what's up with the wild genre switch at the end of the song? Oh, and btw, how does it all relate to the lyrics of a breakup song? I came up with answers that led to more questions about what MMM is trying to say about love that I'm still pondering. I'm pretty sure I had more fun and got more out of the MV than anyone who got bent out shape about it because of a knee-jerk reaction to the orientalism. I have my own set of superficial knee-jerk reactions to most pop music but Mamamoo earned my respect a long time ago because of their great music and their outrageous talent, charisma and personalities. Their songs and MVs are always worth the time and effort it takes to look under the surface and attempt to understand what they're doing or at least create my own meaning from the art they've given us.
