Orange Caramel, known as the group that has done the best out of idol group units, and as a global unit of After school is back with 'THE THIRD SINGLE CATALLENA' after a year and five months.
The title song 'Catallena' is comes from the Pakistan Punjab folk song 'Jutti Meri', and it's a India style disco song. The funky guitar and string makes the song fun, and the lyric talks about mean yet charming 'Catallena' making the song unique for 'Orange Caramel'.

Heheh they released an album there, but it sold like half as much as their Korean release, so I think they've given up, judging from this, and My Copycat. They don't really stand out in Japan as much as they do at home. In the video they're literally dipping themselves in soy sauce to appeal to the j-market! The catallena, the RED SUN who they want to dance with, but who is too arrogant for them, who they cannot compete with. It's quite an amusing dig to display Japanese artists as the octopus woman (is it a hentai reference? Am I just too dirty minded? O__o) They drop their prices, three for one! But still, nobody buys them

***** I wouldn't worry about all that. They're no more of a Korean "imitation" than one Japanese idol group is an imitation of another. There's a lot of room for unique image and sound within that. Besides, idols were originally imported to Japan from France where yé-yé girls and Serge Gainsbourg started it all in the first place. Incidentally, I literally just discovered Lovelyz in related videos and it's quite possible that I now like two Korean groups after all this time. I'm primarily a fan of Akimoto Yasushi's groups in Japan so Lovelyz' image obviously appeals to me.

i am korean and i personally love this song. It is cute and catchy. I will try explaining some of the things people asked about this mv. The lyric is mostly about a girl named "catallena". The three girls(nana,reina,rizi) are singing that catallena is very attractive and they are falling for her. It doesn't mean they love catallena in romantic way. it is more like they admire her for being so cool. Is is like a girl crush, they want to be like her. Anyway the octopus guy who crept people out is fairly well known comedian in korea, and he got famous for acting like a woman in funny way. I think that's why the director casted this guy for octopus.. To make people laugh. Im not sure but i think octopus sushi is one of the most expensive sushi, so what it implies is "octopus= catallena=cool". Anyway this mv is clearly meant to be funny, nothing serious. so just enjoy!

The lyrics remind me of Little Mermaid but the video makes me thinks a lot of theories, let's think about it. The three of them are mermaids and suddenly they are being sell, and after they eat seafood and remind their old them, eventually they begin crying, so the first thing I think about is that someone with more authority took their freedom away, and sell them as something that people enjoys (Food in this case) that's why they are in a golden frame, looking good and shiny, with beautiful smiles but in other scenes they're in (this thing where meat and food are put at the market) with no freedom at all. Later, setting them free in an unknown world, and leaving all of them with traumas for the things they've passed for, something that explains them crying while remembering they were mermaids and now they are being human beings with no objective at all. I'm pretty sure that the video is showing how idols/females in Korea are kind of marketed to the public and sold as objects. As for the lyrics, I don't think they're about liking a girl. Rather, they're speaking as if they have lost their sel-worth because of the girl and want to emulate her.

You're actually correct. I read an explanation and I don't know if I can re-explain it myself, but it's primarily throwing shade at smaller idols/nugus who can't stay true to themselves and become too focused on how awesome the bigger groups are (the octupus symbolizes the bigger groups, OC is the 'nugu group' as they're cheaper). In the end they end up getting eaten and not successful, which is what the end of the video's about, they ended up eating themselves and crying while seeing images of what they wish they could be :)

I've heard of Kpop a lot actually and I've always loved the tone of it. The first time I've heard melodies of Asian culture was when I use to watch inyuasha and I loved the song they played on there in the end credits. I must admit it is starting to grow on me years later.

I came back from the memes and I think I’ve figured out the video lol. It represents the kpop industry. Where the most expensive/popular group, isn’t always the prettier/nicer/ friendlier /most talented group out there. The sexy man and woman will always be popular because they’re controversial. But The 3 mermaids represent the new and fresh people in the industry who take care in making sure they’re perfect and this video is showing how they feel. The whole “she’s a diva and I’m jealous of her but at the same I want to be where she’s at and I’m intrigued to what she’s really like” kinda explains how Someone would feel in that situation.

I think I'm going to agree on your translation of the song~ My translation of the song's meaning is about how OC wants to be like/ hang out with a snobby, yet appealing/ popular girl (the octopus). But OC is getting jealous, then finding out at the end that they don't need to be valued highly (because the taste of the sushi were awesome).

The gist of if is about aspiring to become something you admire, but realising that what you were in the beginning was good enough. Note the costumes; the original polka dots on the expensive octopus and the dancing costumes. At the end each of the girls have a taste of their corresponding sushi (Nana-salmon, Raina-mackerel, Lizzy-shrimp) and it's delicious. That's why they shed tears at the end. Also note the gold ornamental frame of the flashback scenes. This is my interpretation, I hope it helped! :D
