To me, the mk1 escort is the greatest car ever made.😎

My grandfather bought his mk2 new in 76 still in the garage 👌 restored in his honor with a brand new 1700 forged Xflow on twin 45s that gives a symphony that brings nothing other than a smile. And surprisingly (thankfully) a thumbs up and a sweet ride mate from the mini van full of cops that pulled up next to me at the lights after most likely hearing that symphony 🤘🤣👍

I had a beautiful MKII RS2000 in the early 80s. I never had another car that handled as well. I sometimes dream that I kept it in a garage and had forgotten about it. Then I wake up :-(

AVO Escorts are great cars, MK1s my top choice, Lotus Twin Cam, Mexico, RS1600 and of course the ultimate road machine and club rally car RS2000 mk1

I owed a mk1 AVO Mexico,sold it 25years ago, it's my biggest regret 😢
@mikeprzyrembelАй бұрын
Don't think the Twin Cam was ever part of AVO, they were built by hand in a small crib within the trim shop at Halewood using a heavy duty type 49 export bodyshell that came straight off the main Escort production line fully trimmed and painted.

It's often said that rally drivers are the best among all racing drivers.
@paulcaswell28132 жыл бұрын
@@Belgian-Motorsport THE best. Compare circuit-racing: almost the identical line for 70-odd laps, and plenty of time to learn the corners. A rally crew has only one (two if they're lucky) look at a corner in an entire event: and it has to be taken as fast as possible. Yep: rally drivers to the top of the whole heap of competition drivers.

The problem was making the Escort more 'family-friendly', which equalled front-wheel-drive. In an instant, the Escort was a lost cause: all to remove the transmission tunnel from the floor and to make the car easier for Joe Bloggs to drive...

I'd love to see all those ex works show queens dug out of collections, museums and given some of this. LVX942J etc, prep it, drive it hard, get it covered in mud and shit. Proper.

Lovely fun rewarding things to drive. Horrible awkward left-handed and upside-down things to work on. Sadly, to get where you want to go, a screw-driver and a shifter & a pair of pliers is often necessary. The Escorts managed to capture everything that was wonderful about British cars, and everything that was terrible about them, in the same car.

Never heard anyone say they're horrible to work on! Presumably you're not a professional mechanic from any time after the 70s? :-)
@Kneedragon19622 жыл бұрын
@@dungareesareforfools I could forgive a vintage Ferrari, or a 1930s Bentley intended for LeMans, if I had to remove the carburettor and intake manifold to gain unrestricted access to the distributor. But I can't forgive or forget that on a 1300cc panel van intended to be a milkman's truck or a baker's truck or the work vehicle of a locksmith or tiler or sparky or something. I have had to stand in the pouring rain, torch in my teeth, bent double. and remove the inlet and carb to gain access to the distributor, because the points had closed up five miles from nowhere and the car had stopped. Maybe a professional like yourself could have set those points blind, by feel, but I had to be able to see what I was working on. I also had to rebuild and recondition the rack & pinion on that car, and that I must confess was quite straightforward. It was the distributor under the carburettor I didn't like. That and the fact every nut and bolt and thread on it, had to be non-metric ~ but was free to be any of the 3 British 'standard' measurements, and the cylinder-head could be held down by nuts of 4 different British standard sizes ... some AF, some Whitworth .... I have heard the engines on Triumph Stags are just as bad if not worse, but I've never had to touch one of those. I have also done a small amount of fiddling with a 1950s LandRover, and those are not real nice to work on either.
@dungareesareforfools2 жыл бұрын
@@Kneedragon1962 OK, fair enough! I'm not a professional myself, it's just that most pros I've talked to seem to think they're great to work on (compared to anything from the 90s onwards). To be fair to the Escort though, that same engine was fitted to a huge variety of cars.
