I live here in Virginia and the tracks here are really starting to turn towards the safe sides of things. I love it because it’s so good for those kids that are just starting out in motocross.

Kellen. this video hit me in the feels so hard bro. I'm long time watcher of your videos but this is the first time I've commented. i agree with you so much it's not even funny. I got absurdly wrecked at local track in 2011. I can't ride mx anymore because of it. i live in WA state and the track I got ruined at was the week after Seattle sx. seemed the track builder was feeling freaky after mx and being the 20 year old I was, i was game for whatever. Long story short I broke my hip and my back in one fell swoop and have hated life without motocross EVERY SINGLE DAY SINCE. I still ride street but I long for my motocrosss days every single day. every fucking day. no exaggeration. I'd sell the street bike in a heartbeat it meant I could ride mx again. fuck I miss that shit.

Man that's a bummer and I'm sorry to hear that! That's the kind of stuff I think could be such an easier fix with tamer tracks for all skill levels. Other countries have seemed to notice that it's a better idea so hopefully USA track owners catch on as well.

coming from the woods side of racing, MX racing has always kinda scared me. I love tables for the fact it builds you up until you think you can clear it. I agree 110% with you about jumps in the U.S.

Kellen, I absolutely couldn't agree with you more. I'm absolutely obsessed with moto, it's all I love, but money holds me back from going every weekend to practice and without practice, there's no confidence in hitting those tracks, so yea I totally agree with you, kinda stuck! And yes tracks are too gnarly sometimes, I love the ruts, burns, sand and other technical pieces incredibly more than jumps, and I wish there was so much more of that than triples or huge doubles that put you at risk of "pulling an Anderson at MXON".

I agree completely about what you're saying about the big jumps. Here in NC, we have some tracks with some insane jumps as well. I've been to some tracks that have really massive uphill triples and such. I went and rode the old JGR test track back in about 2009-2010 ish time and the gap jumps out there were insane. I know the JGR track was pro caliber, but it's nuts what those guys ride. I think big jumps on the pro tracks are one thing, but the local scene shouldn't have massive gap jumps. Like you were saying about Glen Helen, they should tame the big jumps down on any other day besides pro day.

My dad, who raced a pro national in the early 90's and got a podium, rode what motocross tracks are supposed to be. Even he complains about some of the big jumps they put on the pro national races. I think clearing a big double feels cooler, because its scarier and more dangerous, but it isnt sensible. I think for local tracks, they need to scale back and make some big jumps tabletops instead of doubles. Although, a big double takes less dirt to build and they can use the dirt on other places of the track. If everyone switched to big tables, the rest of the track may not have as much on it. I think there's a happy-medium somewhere to be found, even in the pro races. There just has got to be enough people to have a demand for this style track with tables instead of big doubles, and as of right now, I dont see that demand in a mass quantity. So I don't see it changing anytime soon.

Agreed, I had a hometown track that I learned so much at watching people and riding it. There was one section that had 3 doubles in a row and I ended up rolling all of them for a few months, then I talked to someone and followed them to try it and cased it and hurt myself. Eventually was able to hit the section clean but then it got removed. track was a lot better once it was removed for small whoops.

In Estonia (pretty close to Lithuania) there are also mostly tables, since most of the tracks are pretty natural and have the dirt/hills to use in order to make table jumps. Although, private tracks (few that I know of) pretty much only have doubles, since there just isn't enough dirt to work with so doubles are the only way to go about.

i feel like texas has the perfect mix of different types of track. Theres the beginner tracks with smaller tables with a few big tables. Theres sand tracks with only tables. There are Hybrid supercross tight corners with big tables straight out of the corners. Then there is the Huge doubles and triple step up tracks that are insane but usaully private tracks.

There still an element of danger too to a table top, for those who say "oh it won't be as cool because you take the element of risk away". To watch people jump triples is cool and all, but at the end of the day the goal is to ride again.

having decent sized jumps is all good, then having some bigger stuff you can triple for the crazy people is fine, you can choose not to hit what ever. I do think another major issue is 4 strokes, like a 125 is breaking its balls to make so many jumps where as any 4 stroke can wash front end in the corner, pick up the bike and still make most jumps. It just makes everyone over confident because its so easy.

I have a feeling that you were exaggerating when talking about the 85ft double vs table but if you jump 45ft on an 85ft table or double, you are in for a world of hurt. I dont mean to argue because I agree with you. But with glen helen being my local/favorite track, and preferring old school hilly tracks over doubles, i believe cool rhythms with doubles and triples have a place.

I was laughing probably way too hard at your little rant here 😂. my whole group of racing buddies argue the same shit every time we're at the track together and you couldn't be more right. for the average Joe blow on his clapped out yz 125, there's no reason for 60 foot triples and giant gap doubles. leave that for the fast guys trying to make a name for themselves. come up to norcal or northern Nevada sometime and ride some of our tracks. they are way more novice friendly than just about anything I have seen in socal... for the most part

I agree Kellen - I only started doing motocross two years ago and my brother has been doing it for around 7 - 8 years and when we look at tracks to go to he's always looking for the tracks with the massive jumps in then I'm like looking at the less crazy tracks, but we end up going to the only track in England with Monster doubles etc and there isn't one table-top and I'm like well what am I suppose to be doing here so I agree with the aspect of keeping some tracks less crazy. Also when is part 4 of the track building coming on KZbin?

Honestly couldn't agree with you more, even as a pro its not like i really enjoy jumping the stupid shit thy build on some tracks but as a pro i kind of chose my path and have to do it. There's a lot of ways i could see MX and SX to be safer, if you look back at Arlington they built that triple right out of the corner way to big and steep so a lot of people were casing it and it was causing people to have to roll it which is super dangerous, and unfortunately i had to see one of my good friends get landed on and severely injured. IMHO i see ways that you can still have big jumps that the fans will watch and go WOW without having it be literally life threatening, think back to that jump up the hill at GH last year, i had friends that are top factory guys telling me they were getting headshake up to it and were scared every lap. Total rant haha, its something that's been on my nerves lately. Also GH iis good now theres only one big jump on it and its two jumps that we turn into one.

If you think about it tables are more dangerous becouse with a normal double there is only 1 landing but with a table you can land everywhere on it so if your in between a double your safe but when on a table you are never safe since it is a giant landing zone I do completely understand you but just think about it

I get what you are saying about the safer tracks but in my country this is extremely exaggerated. Most of the jumps are like 2 meters (about 6 foot 5) tall or less and there isn't even a landing. Safe indeed, but once you start getting fast it's a pain in the ass to always have to land on flat ground. Half of the jumps are like that, other half are tabletops. I literally can only think about 2 tracks in my country that have doubles, this is a bad thing for people that want to get better at motocross. The safer option should always be there, but the more complex (and more dangerous) ones shouldn't be left out or you'll get a country that doesn't know how to ride motocross anymore.
@896JB
@896JB 5 жыл бұрын
I disagree with the rant. I respect your opinion and see the point of only having tabletops at small tracks for novice and young riders but there’s a certain weeding out process that happens with these jumps. I raced for roughly 8 years, with many seasons doing the Carolina Ultra/Mega series (hitting tracks like Birch Creek, Muddy Creek and Pro Sport). Riders with good intuition know wether they can make a gap or not. Don’t have the run up you want, you roll it and lose time. Have the right skill and technique you make the gap and cut down your lap times. Any joe shmo can come out of a turn, click neutral, slam it in gear like an idiot and still make half the distance on a table top. The argument about the way tracks “used” to be is invalid. Bikes nowadays have more suspension travel in either end of the bike than Bob Hannah had in his both ends combined. The sport has evolved. Still very much a fan!

I see where your coming from but I disagree on the whole this isn't motocross because just because its changing doesn't mean its different like take a dirt bike they changed over the years that's like saying the 2017 dirt bikes ant a dirt bike that's not a dirt bike the 2000 dirt bikes are the real bike no it still is but its changing its still motocross everything changes

I don't think you can place the statement 'that's not motocross' or 'that is motocross' just because it was/wasn't like that in the 60s and 70s. That would be like calling an BMW i8 not a car because its electric and in the 60s and 70s there were not electric cars. Its just part of progression of the sport I guess I am not opposed or for these 'big doubles' as I like riding tracks with big jumps but I like riding tracks with tables to. I agree that the sport would be made a hell of lot safer if every double turned into a table but at the end of the day the same risks are involved when coming up short or oj'ing it, that's just fact. You MAY be more likely to hurt yourself but realistically thinking about it the same risks are involved with both. Personally I prefer riding more natural and hilly tracks which where I am is possible but I also enjoy riding the 'flat' 'handmade' tracks with big jumps, doubles, tables, rollers etc. I also think you are being pretty ignorant with the whole 'real mx track' statement. Every track has to be a real motocross track otherwise you cant ride it (obviously not applicable if you are making a CUSTOM track for a game such as mxs). I'm not here to start an argument just putting my opinion across.

The whole purpose of my "real" versus "hybrid" argument was that of how the sport has changed since the 60s and 70s due to the invention of a second sport. Supercross, is not Motocross. Just like Motocross is not Supercross. When the first Superbowl of Motocross happened in 1972, it was very Motocross-like. They even went to a stadium that had elevation change (LA Coliseum) to make sure it kept its roots. The very definition of Motocross is a cross country (land) race on motorcycles. That meant nothing was man-made back in the early days (1920s and 1930s), and what once was Motocross has now become essentially hare-scrambles. Then for about 35 years, Motocross was a pretty simple formula. From 1950ish until the late 80s, every MX track was man-made terrain that was designated where to go by placing banners in the shape of a circuit. In Supercross at this time, they were starting to experiment with things like whoops and small rhythm lanes with the occasional large double. As crowds began filling stadiums and less people were flooding places like the Carlsbad GP or the Unadilla GP in the early 90s, the sport had finally hit a revolution. If Motocross was to keep up with the popularity of Supercross, they were going to have to adapt to what made crowds go "Ooooh" and "Ahhhh". So then we have things like Larocco's Leap being built on Red Bud which was (in the eyes of the promoters) always meant to be a double with a single at the end of it. While it is true some things that resembled doubles existed in the late 70s and 80s, they only did because Danny Chandler or Bob Hannah would have the giant balls to turn two pretty far apart singles into one jump. The fact was, they weren't meant to be jumped. So when Larocco sends an uphill triple on a 125 and the whole crowd loses their bananas, every track builder across the nation now knew what they needed to do to keep Motocross attention high. Now Glen Helen, Muddy Creek, Ironman Raceway, Budds Creek, Hangtown, Millville, and other no longer used Pro Motocross venues all have giant uphill triples on the track. Supercross, which is not Motocross, again, they aren't the same, had changed a near 40 year tradition in less than a decade because it's what fans wanted. Like some of the other posters on this video said, several pros have famously bashed the big jumps as dangerous and unnecessary. If you look over in Europe, where Motocross is still far and away #1 in comparison to Supercross, their legendary tracks (Maggiora, Loket, Uddevalla, Ernee, and recently non-used places like Namur) are all built into hills and have amazing natural flow without any outrageous jumps. They are revered in Europe as true Moto. In my opinion, that is real Moto. When you take Supercross concepts, and put them on a Motocross track, that is a hybrid. Very long winded, but I feel like I didn't explain enough in the video. And not mad at you, really isn't directed at you, just furthering my explanation of it.
