Scrapped! 1995 Chrysler LHS!

I swear we were just talking about these the other day and the next thing I know here one is! And honestly... it’s in pretty dang good shape! Clean interior, straight body. No rust , and honestly I think the drivetrain is salvageable. We shall see! Drop a comment down below and let us know what you think !

It's actually in pretty good shape body wise. A car that old up here in Michigan would just be a huge pile of rust. If you did the quick fix it wouldn't be a bad first car for a kid or a decent winter beater.

My grandparents have had a ton of Chrysler products over the years and have a good experience with all of them. It really comes down to how you take care of it. So don’t give me the whole “ChRyslEr iS TrAsh” thing.

@@markvanderwel7182 Can't be. A Donk is a 1971-1976 Impala. People always ask why, well its the Impala symbol because it looked like a donkey back then. People that customize cars started calling them "donks" because of that. You have three types of chevy's, donk (71-76), box (77-90), and bubble (91-96). Whitest guy you'd ever meet and even I know that. People calling all large cars that have been lowered and customized as "donks", are just simply wrong.

I started out poorer than poor. I’m not gonna get into details but after my parents passed (2008) I found one of these in great shape and bought it for $900, it looked like it had never seen mud snow or sleet in its life! Anyway years later I’ve done very well for myself and have had/have “higher end” cars. That said my 94LHS is still to this day one of the best cars I’ve ever owned! Never let me sit and always made sure I got there comfortably lol If I ever come across another in that shape I can honestly I’d have a hard time walking away from it.

I love these. My Father bought one in the same color brand new in 1994. His had the charcoal interior and infinity CD with “spatial imaging”. It’s also the car I would later learn to drive and take my road test in. Also 1994 was the last year of the old pentastar emblem

I would think it would be worth putting a solenoid pack in that one. It's clearly been looked after or the interior leather wouldn't be so nice after nearly 25 years and 190,000 miles. Plus they're pretty unusual now so a pretty nice, solid example that could benefit from a little TLC is exactly the type of thing that would appeal to the new generation of car enthusiasts. There's certainly plenty of potential in that one to make a really nice example, and you certainly won't park next to another one too quickly...

I have the exact same car--except it's a '96 LHS. Bought it in early '99 with 34K miles. Paid $13 K for it. Now has 160K miles. Have put $4000 in it since purchase. That s for all tires, Water pumps, Batteries, wipers, Struts, brakes, Gaskets, muffler, tune ups, etc. Not a dime on major engine repairs. Original Tranny. Just dropped tranny fluid, gasket and filter today--clean pan! Tranny shop said tranny tight and in great shape. Owner said: "Drive it like you stole it". Also put a new 1/2 shaft on it due to torn boot. I do oil at 3K; Tranny fluid at 60K, other maintenance when necessary/scheduled. A/C Locked up 1 year after purchase. Dropped it's belt and have used "4 windows/60 mph" A/C Since. 20 years later-- Still gets 27MPG on Interstate at 80 mph. 18-20 around town. Uses little oil. I have a strong, but not quite heavy foot. Paint is like new. Fantastic ride and wonderful Infinity Sound system. (I like the Who--so guess how loud the stereo goes ??? LOUD !) I know you sold it, but mine is still running strong. The Long Heavy Sedan has been good to me. The 3.5 liter has been good for acceleration, Highway driving and economy. If you beat a mule--it'll die on you. Same thing with cars. Glad you didn't crush it.

That LH chassis was one of the best engineered , front wheel drive with the engine mounted longitudinally, cab foward, it was a superior handing, riding vehicle. To bad the transmissions had some issues.

"Chrysler is garbage" he says, driving around a 200K mile car with everything working on it. I had a 1994 that I finally got rid of at 265K miles. Still had the original starter, exhaust, and ran well. Never a problem with the windows, power locks, keyless entry. Aside from the flimsy tie rod ends that I replaced twice in the more than a decade that I owned the car, and a transmission rebuild, it was the most comfortable, reliable car I've ever owned. Handled very nice too.

My old boss had one with the same transmission issue, from what I remember we had to drop the transmission pan and replace the filter and also replace the "solenoid pack" on the exterior of the transmission to resolve the problem fully. It's not too hard but at 192000 miles this thing is just about ready to poot anyway

Jimmy JimJims: A friend of mine took a 93 Concorde in Trade from someone that owed him money in 98. I ended-up replacing the toasted Trans-axle for him in 2002 with a Factory Rebuild from a Chrysler Dealership he purchased it and another for the tune of like $2,000ish (they both came) with Warranties. He insisted I used Redline ATF...his Concorde is pushing close to 600,000 miles with the original rebuilt unit performing perfectly...the backup one still in its Chrysler crate. Only thing he has been religious with,is complete flush on the Redline ATF every 36,000 miles...other than a valve job at 350,000+miles (retrofitted with sodium filled exhaust valves) that kinda slow/adequate 3.3 pushrod just goes and goes. Funny thing is,when I did the trans-axle replacement and had another Chrysler Dealership Program the ECM for the rebuilt unit's shift points...they ended-up doing a bunch of "Service Bulletin"stuff on his car for free....free fuel pump,injector lines,etc. and other smog related stuff.

exactly. My parents had a 2000 intrepid with the 2.7L. you have to keep the oil clean in those motors and change the PCV valves out, otherwise they will blow up. they ended up getting rid of it because the differential was going and the wheel bearings kept going out on it, and it apparently going to need some new struts,too.

I purchased my USED 1997 Chyrysler LHS in Feb of 1997. No. That's not a mistake. It was one of those program lease cars, and was turned in with 17,500 miles on it. I still own it. It has paint peeling mostly due to baking sun here in the southwest. The front seats (mostly driver side) are pretty well worn, but lots of that wide super tape makes them still usable. Mechanically it is in very good shape. Drive train and engine are good, although the transmission slips a little between 1st and 2nd band, but it's tolerable. I've taken very good care of it, and invested in keeping it running well, even replacing front springs. Typical u-joints, rubber booties, tie-rod ends. Things that kept the car riding "tight". Things like electric door lock activators, lubricating door window actuators, you know, that sort of sfuff I did myself, as well as spark plugs, spark plug wires and looms, windshield washer fluid tank ... in other words anything that didn't a car lift, for the most part, I could fix, repair, or replace myself. Recycle yards were my source for most of the parts. Always used the best tires (Michelin). Replaced engine belts myself. The ONLY thing I could never get working was the washer fluid sensor, which I replaced more than once, but the fluid low indicator light would stay on. I fixed that by removing the bulb! I have a 2016 Chrysler 300 S. I bought it remotely, so never test drove it. It now has ==>4280

Damn Jay that is actually in really good shape! I have a 93 Intrepid a few years back and loved it! The 214 horsepower 3.5s were actually great motors, and were surprisingly quick for the 90s cars, even quicker than 75% of the 2000s sedans. Rode like a cloud, handled pretty well for a large domestic sedan, had soooo much room inside, had a blast furnace for a heater (honestly it’s still to this day the best heater of any car I’ve ever driven) fit and finish were actually pretty damn good for a Chrysler product, and the engine never ever missed a beat up to 167,000 miles when the tranny took a dump, for the second time while owning the car, so I sold it and bought a ‘94 Corolla. Really the only downside to these Chrysler LH cars was the transmissions. I loved the car, just didn’t want to pay another $1200 to get the transmission rebuilt just 2 years after having it rebuilt before lol If the tranny can be fixed properly I’d sell it (or even keep it for a little, have to go on at least one road trip to fully understand these cars) Whether it’s you or someone else, this car will definitely make someone really happy! (Oh and the 3.5 calls for 89 octane, we’ll at least my ‘93 did)

I had a 96 Intrepid 3.5 24 VALVE engine 214 hp. The shifter. Shifted side ways for manual operation of the automatic transmission. Front wheel drive. The engine set in The bay. The right way. My wife and I ordered it from the factory. It had a plum purple paint job. It also was factory. The Chevy Lumina was 3.8 215 hp. I would kill them at the stop light with this car. Ran 92 octane and better tires. The only thing I didn't like we're the $ 50 center pieces that wouldn't stay on. Love that car. It got killed one day by a UPS truck. Had over 240,000 miles on it. The Chrysler LHS came standard with the 3.5L engine in it. There were literally millions of 3.5L engines sold from 1993 through 2010. They were good engines, but certainly not rare by any means.

I’ve always loved the LHS cars! The Intrepid was my favorite out of all of them! Up until I was 16 the Intrepid was my dream car, then one of my aunts got a 2010 Cadillac CTS Luxury and I just fell in love with Cadillacs and have been obsessed with them ever since. In fact, another one of my aunts had 2 Intrepids a 1993 and 2002, she drives her cars for 10 years then trades them in. That’s actually how I discovered you, Jay! I was youtubing Dodge Intrepids and your videos popped up. I subscribed and have practically binged watched your videos and livestreams since then (that was earlier this month!) You are definitely one of the nicest, most down to earth, and hilarious KZbinrs I’ve ever watched and been subscribed too! Aidan Montgomery I’ve got a MAJOR soft spot for Chrysler, my grandparents had a bunch of them when I was very young. When my grandmother passed away in July of 2017, I got her car which was a red 2011 Chrysler 200 convertible. It had 30K miles when I got it, my grandfather had to sell it due to financial reasons, it had about 75K miles on it when he sold it, I just had to resew the top and the normal oil changes and brake jobs, no major issues, I really miss that car

My late grandma had one of these...she set off the airbags one day at the bank by putting it in drive instead of reverse at the bank. Rode really nice! Hers was a nice 1990's green (the domestics had really good shades of green in the '90s). Amazingly enough, the insurance fixed the car after the airbag incident, but we had to take away her keys after that...car went to a cousin

'94-97 LHS/'94-96 New Yorker are my personal all-time favorite cars. I sold them new ('95-96) and fell in love with them. I've personally owned 7 of them (3 were brand new) over the years. The last one was a '94 and had 286,000 miles when I sold it for $1,000 in 2013. They positively are the best riding (and driving ) highway cars you can own. The interior is roomy and not claustrophobic like many of the newer cars. Trunk is "gy-normous". Plenty of power to smoke the tires (with Traction Control off, of course) should you be into that sort of thing. If you are interested in one "for whatever reason", avoid the ('93 and) '94. First year production woes plagued this MY. Typical LH car (LHS, NY, Vision, Concorde, Intrepid) problem areas... PAINT fade is almost a given (roof, trunk, hood), occasional transmission issues (def on the '93-'94), a/c compressors, rear quarter panel rust in Northern state cars. I'd avoid the 3.3L on the lower end models and buy the 3.5L V6 (standard on the LHS, NY... optional on the rest of them). Just my 2 cents!!!!! Thanks for posting!

My brother had a 97 Intrepid that was basically the same thing as this. The paint used to be purple at one time and I guess over time it started fading. It ran great and was such a comfortable car. When he was selling it, he let me drive it. I would have bought it, but couldn't afford to fix it. The parking brake didn't work and it really needed an alignment.

You can tell the year by the oval exhaust tips. In 96 they were round. I believe this cars 3.5 24 VALVE engine is around 214 hp. Nice car. Fix the trans problem good to go. Also put in a new internal water pump and timing belt. If the timing belt breaks the valves drop into the pistons.

I used to work on alot of these in the 90's the intrepid carried the 3.5 with twin throttle bodies too. They were crazy fast (for the time) the LHS was quite sought after, rivaling Lincoln and caddy in luxury. I still like them. Problems were always intake gaskets,water pump leaks.

This was my first car and i had it for 5months. It has alot of issues but has been unbelievablely reliable and i love my lhs to no end. Im also in Canada and it had 0 issue with -30 to -40 weather lol

Ive had the car for almost a year now and to spite the transmission I still runs and drive great. For me at least. Its definitely got its problems but I love it so much that I dont even care😂 plus 900$ was to good to pass up

I wish I lived close to you. I just bought a 1996 LHS 2 days ago, I would buy yours, if for nothing else, the seats. I bought mine as a first car for my 2 oldest kids, I figured, its a tank, so they should be safe if they are in an accident.

I suspect it’s a solenoid issue as well. Make the repair, clean it up and put 1,500 obo on it. Someone will get another 25-50k out of it before it self destructs. Looks comfey, great rolling Ramada! Thanks Jay.

Of all the Mopar LH cars, this is the nicest styled one, inside and out. I love how despite it being FWD, they were still able to mount the engine longitudinally. These cars are a dead breed and any car that can be saved, even slightly SHOULD be saved

The 1st cadillac Eldorado, olds toronado early FWD subarus, and the Acura Legend also had a longitudinally mounted engine despite being FWD. They should all be like that. Working on transverse engines sucks.

I have a 96. 91,000. So comfortable. Paid $1200. For it Four years ago. I love this 25 year old car. Huge trunk. Only problem is finding replacement parts. Like ponytail for sencers.lol rewired my self. Not bad for an old lady.

I remember when it was just a show car to guage reaction. They brought it out the next year with cheaper to make taillights as compared to the show car's inset custom lights. 192K is a lot of miles for any American car but on a Chrysler LHS, that's amazing. My coworker's father had one and the transmission gave him many headaches, probably what you suggested. I rarely see these cab forward Chrysler products now, they had a short shelf life. My coworker's wife had an Intrepid and the 2.7 motor just quit.

I actually forgot I own one of these until I saw this video recommendation. Same color but the NY version column shift. it’s been on my land I own in Kentucky and completely forgot I had one...probably has bees in it now. Edit: the a/c was the single best I’ve ever seen in an automobile shy of a ‘50s double blower motor Frigidaire GM car.
