This is exactly what I am facing with my son who is a kindergartener. THANK YOU for sharing!!

You are welcome! I hope it helps! Kinder intervention is critical to get kids on the right track if they are already a bit behind. Good luck!

Middle school here... Can the Freckle placement be used as a universal screener? We use STAR and Freckle, and the budget is tight this year.

Sometimes we start by using what we have. That being said, computer adaptive tests are not going to provide the most reliable results. I would suggest looking into a screener that puts kids in front of teachers. Acadience can be printed for free if opting for the paper pencil version. That requires hand scoring, but if the assessors trained and follows the scoring guidelines and protocols, will yield far better results that can be used to target instruction. Hope that helps 😊

Great video! I believe starting interventions in kindergarten is very beneficial! I have a question regarding reading for kinder and beyond. One common issue is that it appears that the students do not need help, because they are able to "read from context". Therefore, they are on the ideal levels but are not successful otherwise. How would you go about advocating for intervention for those kinders and above who appear to be good readers but may not be? Thanks!

Hi Courtney! If you use a good universal screener, the data will show the essential early literacy skills that the student is missing. In kindergarten it will be a focus on phonemic awareness, alphabetic principal, and basic phonics. You are absolutely right that leveled reading is not going to be helpful in identifying needs. I have a video on universal screening if you are interested 😁

@@EmilyMuccianti Thanks for your response! I have watched that video a few times😁. I wish we had the screeners you mentioned. We use primarily NWEA MAP testing and have recently started using Fast bridge which gives some of those foundational skills. However, in my district, interventionists are only allowed to use reading levels to group students regardless of the universal screener's data. This occurs in the classroom, too. We can only use LLI and/or Reading Recovery/Early Literacy assessments and tools for groups to show reading growth and use that data as a priority over MAP or FB. This has made it difficult to advocate for kids who need more, because again it typically shows that they are doing better than what they truly are.

I hope your district catches up to you. Any chance you or your staff can go through LETRS training? That will be very eye opening.

@@EmilyMuccianti The district allowed one school to do it, but that was all. As interventionists, we were not allowed to participate. I really would love to have that training. Thanks!
