My 10 Chord Barry Harris Routine, Drop 3 Version with "Borrowing"
Here’s the Drop 3 version of my 10 Chord Barry Harris 6 diminished routine. I’m also trying to get creative with some “borrowing” here, with varying degrees of success! But that’s the point. Experiment with this stuff and find your own unique way of doing it. Anyway, forgive the occasional flub….

it is incredibly beautiful some voicings that you reached with the concept of borrowed. My brain is also burning practicing! I wonder how much practice is necessary to incorporate it into habitual language and to be able to do it naturally in the middle of a song. Btw, thanks again for sharing these videos Isaac!

Thanks for this tutorial! This is a really nice complement to the drop 2 three note voicings, as the drop two has a really beautiful second interval not present in three

Also, the smaller interval in the left hand has a nice darker sound than drop 2. I like this color a lot!

I may have thought of an 11th chord for the routine: a minor 6th on the flat VII degree makes a dominant 9th sus4. Moving from this to the tritone's minor makes a very pretty sound. P.s. thanks for these videos they are great! Yours are the only videos on Barry Harris' style I've been able to understand and enjoy.

Wouldn't it be a dominant b9 sus4 if it's minor? I thought that major was 9th sus4

Hey Isaac. So what would I use for a C13b9 or C7b9? Is it just the "diminished scale" over that chord? Its seems from what Ive read people say play Edim/C to get a C7b9. So E whole/half diminished scale( yeah, i know that terminology is outlawed!)? Borrow from F#dim7? Why is this not normally mentioned as a scale option? Thanks

Yes, you can borrow from the "roots of the dominants"

@@isaacraz Do you mean the "roots of the dominants" on the related diminished chord within the 7th diminished scale? For example, in the second bar of It Could Happen to You, on the C7b9, you would just borrow the Db because you're thinking in terms of the C7dim scale? I still haven't learned the 7th dim scales because the 6th diminished scales are still blowing my mind and have me at cognitive overload haha! But I guess now is the right time to start learning the C7dim scale and perhaps the C7b5 (?) dim scale, if it allows me to start playing these b9 dominant chords correctly through borrowing roots.

Yes that’s it. For that scenario I would think “diminished family” and for the other id think “tritones minor”. Of course all the concepts are connected and in the end your ear knows what’s right for you!

@@isaacraz Ok I played with it for 30 minutes just now and I like that it's a simpler way of thinking, since you're just borrowing a note instead of moving through a substitution. It also blew my mind that when you borrow from the "diminished family" on a C7dim chordscale, you suddenly have 10 notes you can play and only the Eb and F# are off limits. That's a lot of options! And if you were to substitute the C7b5 dim scale you now have 11 notes available, if you're borrowing from the "diminished family", with only Eb being off limits. Just mind blowing.

It’s Woody Guthrie’s line. Think of it like singing “This Land is Your Land” the sticker next to it says “I voted early in New York City” which I did. ✊
