I wouldn't be a guitarist/songwriter/musician without George Harrison. I love his Slide playing, his strumming patterns, his use of augmented and diminished chords, and just his general songwriting. I'm 17 with my first album on the way, and I basically have to give him credit for everything on it :)

Brian May was the reason I started to play guitar, I saw Queen live in 1980 and while I am sure everyone spent the concert watching Freddie Mercury, I spent the show just in awe of Brian, and his 3 part harmony was mind blowing.. and the fact he built his own guitar with his dad just amazes me.

Alex Lifeson (Rush) 9. Buzz Osborne (Melvins) 10. Greg Sage (Wipers) not in any order after the first three. I was going to say Greg Ginn of Black Flag but chose Stephen from Descendents instead since Ginn's music and playing have frankly sucked since 1986 while Stephen has continued to develop and put out great music with Descendents and All over the years. they have similar styles and Stephen can play like Ginn (hence him being a member of Flag) but he's also a more technical player imo and has a unique style of his own. I think his guitar work on the Descendents album All is a good example of that. I love both bands and they've had a huge impact on me in many ways but Greg Ginn's playing hasn't really changed if anything I might argue it's gotten worse post Black Flag.

I know you aren't into metal, but you should give some early Judas Priest a listen, particularly the Sad Wings of Destiny and Stained Class albums, Glenn Tipton was very blues influenced guitarist so you may like his twist on incorporating blues into metal.

Also they made an excellent pick with richie faulkner to follow up kk downing. awesome guitar player
@jiantjingerjohn7 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I think when people suggest Judas Priest they too often point to their bigger selling albums such as British Steel and Screaming for Vengeance, I much prefer the atmosphere of the earlier albums and find that Sad Wings and Stained Class are pretty brilliant the whole way through wheras later albums (maybe with the exception of Painkiller) I find have more filler songs or songs that are a bit too cheesy.

+jiantjingerjohn - The solo in Beyond the Realms of Death off Stained Class is still to this day one bad ass piece of guitar work. Amazing solo.
@jiantjingerjohn7 жыл бұрын
I'm actually trying to learn it at the moment, I've been working on it for a while, but I'm not too dedicated to practice what with work and kids...and video games...that all get in the way of learning. But I can play through both Glenn and KK's solos with about 95% accuracy now, I just need to focus on bringing it all up to scratch. The song I'd really like to be able to play though is Stained Class though...but it's way beyond my skill level at the moment.

1) Gary Moore: Passionate and talented. Nobody has moved me the way he just did. The first time I heard Still got the blues it changed me forever. 2) Slash: Melodic genius with outstanding improvising flow and killer groove. 3) Ritchie Blackmore: Solid and precise 70s corner stone player who has great songwriting skills. 4) Carlos Santana: Very essential instrumental songwriting before the 80s guys. Sweetness using just few notes. 5) Gustavo Cerati: Amazing rhythm guitar, chords and Riffs. The best latinamerican singer/songwriter who ever lived. 6) John Norum and 7) Kee Marcello (Europe) : Some of the few shredders how never bored me the hell out, always enhancing the songs with strong Rock and Pop sensibility. 8) Eric Johnson: Chords as beautiful as his licks. Smooth and almost impossible to play. 9) Joe Satriani: Catchy and fun only guitar tunes. A blues hard rock guy who introduced a new flavor into guitar soloing. 10) Brian May: Queen.... Nuff said. He was my first guitar hero. Other influences: Jimmy Page, Neal Schon, Iron Maiden, Van Halen, Eric Clapton, Eagles, Foreigner, ZZ Top, Steve Lukather, George Benson, Mark Knopfler, Pat Metheny, Greg Howe, Uli Jon Roth, Mike Einziger....

For me my #1 favorite guitar player is Frank Zappa given his extreme latitude of phrasing ,his insanely complex chicken picking style I've not seen any other player replicate it ,I'm also a huge fan of Frank's use of triple picking ,hammer on s & massive amount of pull offs within his extended solos as long as 17 minutes without ever repeating himself in the soloing .

I think that a sober SRV is the best guitarist that’s ever lived
@shanewright27725 жыл бұрын
I saw him decidedly unsober in ??1986?? (just before he went into rehab) and, well, he was not the best and he was not sober.

Brian May, Carlos Santana, Gary Moore, Johnny Winter for pure lead playing (may for composition as well), Knopfler of course, and Chet Atkins playing "Vincent" is what made 8 yr old me want to do this thing some 42 years ago.

Buckethead is definitely my favorite guitarist. A lot of his more popular tracks, like Jordan and We Can Rebuild Him, show off his more hectic playing, which I love as well, but when you dig deeper into his giant repetoire, you can find so many different styles. From bluegrass to heavy metal, to solo acoustic music and much more. I recommend the Electric Tears album and the Elephant Man's Alarm Clock album.

I’d say the most influential to me learning to play were Clapton, Mayer, Hendrix, beck, Albert king, Stevie ray, and Rory. All those guys still to this day make me wanna pick up my guitar and play every time I hear them. Mayer was big for me since he was the only current artist when I began playing.
