I'm Aja Dang, and this video follows a day in my life as a Peerspace host. While we fell into this side hustle during Houston-gate 2023, it has become my most lucrative side hustle, which we've continued to do after moving back to LA.
I know that this isn't a side hustle that everyone can do and there are a few challenges with renting out our space (especially with dogs and living there full time) but it has been a wild ride for the year that we've been doing it. I think this is a great side business idea for someone who owns or lives in a live/work loft like us, and can provide a unique experience for anyone looking to host a party, booking a photoshoot or shoot a film. Living in LA really helps since everyone is continuously creating and hustling.

Great learning about this side hustle, I do personally think renting out your own home makes your home not homey bc you’re displacing yourself and you can’t go home if you want to. I can see this idea being nice for those who want to rent out a space they don’t actively live in and also it wouldn’t put your address out there esp since you and Brian are public figures.

I'd have more of a problem with our address out there is we owned this space, but as a renter, I don't particularly feel scared about it. But hopefully we can find a proper studio and rent that out instead.

Hi! No goals for saving for an LA house. it's just too far out of reach and I've learned to appreciate being a renter more after the mess with the Houston house.

The only other one that would compare would be dog sitting with Rover. I was a dog sitter/dog walker but having untrained dogs in our space all the time ended up being more of a hassle than it was worth it

Great video! Can you talk about how your complex allows you to share the space? Do they question when large equipment is being transported in?

Hi! No, not at all. The complex always has shoots going on, most car commercials you see are actually shot in my neighborhood and in my building. But we do make sure all bookings keep their equipment within our patio/apartment so it’s not in the walkway.

Does the peerspace platform handle all of the taxes, platform hosting, etc. for you? Meaning, do they pay you out your gross amount at the end of the day and send you a tax doc at the end of the year for your earnings? or is that something you have to manage on your end? I own my home and would love to consider this as an option, but as an independent contractor, I LOATHE having to do all of the bookkeeping that comes with it!

No. I live in a designated live/work loft so besides people like me there are also hair stylists, tattoo artists, photographers and massage therapists

Do you leave your food in the fridge during bookings?

we do. For large bookings who may bring crafties or for shoots that have a food component to them, I’ll ask if they need fridge space and I’ll move things around for them

Whats the tax situation and what kind of deductions can you take?

Same as you would for rental income, home depreciation. It sounds counter intuitive, since homes appreciate, but you can opt to depreciate assets such as homes and cars.
