ive found that shooting analog film involves a cost. I dont mean financially only. We all know that limitations create value. We have hit the age that film is shot recklessly and cheaply. weve become the ultimate disposable society. I remember the days of taking a photo and nobody ran to the camera to see what the picture looks like. I remember shooting on my bolex in the early 80s and carefully planning. I didnt just shoot everything and hope in the editing I could find something worth while. people talk about the "magic of film" in respect to the look. and yes, its there for sure. but as you mentioned, its all in the process of shooting. Theres something special about stripping down the excess and actually participating through the lens with the life before it. we seem to become a part of what we capture, like we had a say in it. its personal.

Thanks to epic light media for shouting your great channel out!! Excited for what's to come (Dumb) question: do you grade yout 16mm footage? what stocks do you usually use? what are your thoughts on filmconvert nitrate with all the film emulations?
@lewispotts3 жыл бұрын
Theres no dumb questions! Yeah i grade the film, I have another video on my channel called "how to shoot 16mm film" talking a little bit about that, ill get into that more in the future. I usually use 250D or 500T I have some of those plug ins, I dont find myself using them much, some times ill try them on to give me some ideas of were I could take the grade, but I usually always do it myself from scratch

I believe the restrictions on shooting film force a necessary workflow habit of preproduction before and while shooting that should be carried over to shooting digital. I've spent 28 years on various productions and it's astonishing how unprepared and haphazard many directors and DP's are. But on sets that are run tightly it's a delightful flow of creation (still hard work but enjoyable).

I rented and used an Arri SR1 and 2. Also used a Beaulieu R16. Eventually I bought a Frezzolini LW-16 with 12-120 Angenieux zoom lens and 2 400' magazines for $1200 back in 1996 (which was pretty cheap for a 16mm camera set like that back then). It's basically like a CP-16 newscamera (same movement). Still have it. The zoom lens was one of those 'dogfinder' types and the magazines were those Mickey Mouse ear types. You had to screw off the lids. Sometimes they'd get stuck. I remember spending a half hour trying to get the film out of one of them. You have to turn it just right. Still love and prefer film.

I can no longer find that video where your talk about your Ultra 16 Boulez that has its gate machines out even wider than 1:85 aspect ratio. So I’m presume around 2:00 To 1. As a long time Bolex 16 owner. My last purchase was a EL Super 16 direct from Bolex factory. I need to have some make me an external power supply like yours. I’d also love to buy a SBM Bolex and add a Tobin electric motor as my favorite filming speed is 30 FPS even though I’m based in Australia. I’d also like to have that at Ultra 16 with a wider aspect like yours.

Thanks for the great videos! I have a H16 EL and want to connect a v-mount battery. Maybe this is a realy stupid question, bu is it possible to use a normal 4 pin xlr to power the camera? And do you have to watch the voltage? The manual says 16,5V is the max, while fully charged v-mount battery can output 16.8V...

Hello, thanks for the videos. Do you know if I could feed the same way that you do with a V'lock battery, an MTS motor for a Reflex SBM...? Thank you.
@lucasgenevey1463 Жыл бұрын
Hello, I did that exact set up with a Rex 5 + MST motor + V-lock battery and it work perfectly. The MST motor can handle up to 15 volts I think, so with a 14.8 volt V-Mount there's no problem at all. Hope it helps !
