Reminds me of my younger days. My first car was a '65 Mustang GT, I bought in 1973 for $500. I drove it through high school, starting going to a local community college where I rebuilt the motor in it and installed a Melling camshaft. The next year I was involved in a wreck with an 18 wheeler, and totalled the car. Bought a '67 Mustang with a 6 and a three speed, rounded up the parts I needed and swapped in the 289. Wish I still owned either of those cars today. But fast forward and when I retired, I bought a restored '73 Mach 1. So we go to cruise ins and car shows. Still have that Mustang fever!

If you're wondering about Borgeson power steering, I put their box in my 66' mustang and it was the most difficult install I have ever done. I love working on my car (I've swapped my trans, clutch, flywheel, rear end, front and rear suspension, and installed Sniper EFI) but I would never do another Borgeson box. Every part, including their z-bar needed to be modified, and it almost reduced me to tears😂. If you choose to go that route, buy tri-y headers.

Well done, Ben - your channel is really taking off now! I fitted a Hurst shifter on my '67 Fastback and wished I hadn't bothered - the original Ford 4 speed shifter was much better. As for the steering, I fitted an EZ-Steer electric system - it's a bit wild on the understeer, but an absolute breeze when it comes to parking the old beast! Borgeson makes a good power steering conversion kit I used it on my 66 mustang and it only took a few hours. It gets rid of the junk ford piston style power steering and adds a Chevy style box. You have to remove your steering column and trim it but that is in the instructions and a bunch of KZbin videos cover it. I haven’t had any issues with it in well over two years. It’s a lot cheaper and easier than a mustang II rack 😂
@FourSpeedFilms Жыл бұрын
Thanks! Did you need to buy new headers?
@E66_h3ad Жыл бұрын
@@FourSpeedFilms nah my headers were fine I have a 87 5.0 block with long tubes and it was all good. The 289 should be about the same but I’d check out some videos to see there’s plenty of them. Just incase for some reason my headers arent the same as yours. But it’s basically a replacement steering box. It uses existing hardware on the manual steering and basically makes it a power box. Which is super helpful it’s a big difference. It doesn’t feel sloppy but it’s going to definitely be a lot “looser” than manual steering because of the power boost 😂. The worst part is really reinstalling the box because the headers are there but other than that it wasn’t too bad I had it done in an afternoon. But I would def do this over a factory power steering unit as those stabilizer type steering units are known for going bad constantly.

@FourSpeedFilms Жыл бұрын
When I did some research it looks like it isn’t that important with old transmissions. They have a higher tolerance from being misaligned. However, modern transmissions have a very small tolerance for misalignment. We also didn’t have any extra dowel pins This is where I found the info: www.holley.com/blog/post/how_to_align_your_bellhousing_for_maximum_transmission_and_clutch_life/

Those Centerforce pressure plates are a gimmick. A friend of mine with a 69 Camaro was shifting gears and the 4 speed locked up into a gear which I don’t remember which. The weights broke away and pieces were jammed in the clutch and pressure plate. Be careful at high rpm shifts, they may let go. I myself went with a Luk clutch in my 70 Z28 and don’t believe in those weights. IMO it’s BS.😂 Wow and here I thought you were doing the work yourself. 😂 Parts given to you and installed, must be nice.😮 All that work and you don’t even install a TKX 5 speed. 😂 BTW your steering wheel is not straight which would bother me.
