The poor Jem in the background going "am I a joke to you?" Seriously though - you are a very lucky man to have a wife that loves you so much to make your dream come true - of course, you now owe her forever. (LOL) I have loved hearing Steve talk about the Universe, how he knew they would one day be accepted and how he nearly cried when he heard Korn on the radio and just knew it was a Universe.

Funny story. I got one in the mid 90s from a guy who got a speeding ticket and needed the cash. $250. No shit, $250. I do have all 3 of the Universes, that one, the black one and the 777. Congratulations Phil, and happy anniversary.

I always thought the black and green dot was the coolest next to the swirls, not all of the swirls are as good looking and very few are in as good of shape as Phil’s.

Back in 91, I had the choice between that and the uv77gr. Got the gr. Turns out there were only 340 of the gr made. Phenomenal guitar! Sadly had to sell it 10 years ago. Congrats!

What an amazing guitar. Steve Vai is off the charts in ability and technique. Seen him once on a G3. I was just watching in silence.

In ‘91, the store I was working for couldn’t even get these, a mid level Mom and Pop, and at that time, the market was indeed soft on these, we did get a couple of black ones if memory serves

Nice Universe! I have had the pleasure of owning a couple of the original non-swirls. I still have nice 1990 Pearl White Universe. I have always wanted a swirl but I'm not willing to pay the price. Have fun!

That Universe is one of the nicer examples I've seen. Definitely a guitar to be proud to own. I love the older Japan made Universe guitars. I get my 7-string kicks with the Japan made RG 7620 guitars. Essentially the same thing as a Universe except without the middle single coil pickup. That pickup gets in my way anyhow, so I'm okay living without it. I heard the original 7620 guitars were made with overstock necks and body blanks intended for Universe guitars. The idea was that the Universe series wasn't selling well at the time and Ibanez thought they could clear out parts if they sold a slightly cheaper RG version. Although to be fair, the original price of the RG 7620 was cheaper than a Universe, it wasn't very cheap at all. $1299 new back in 1997. It was the most expensive RG guitar at that time. The Universe was $2000 for comparison. I've played both, they feel the same to me. If you want the playability of a Universe without the cost, find a 7620.

The story about it being $999 reminds me of seeing the John Petrucci Ibanez JM90 (90th anniversary series) in a store for $800 in 1999. I had the money and I was even in the market to buy a guitar but I ended up passing. They go for a ridiculous amount now and I kick myself every time I think about it.
