Contrary to popular belief, farming is not as simple as planting a seed and watching it grow. Over the next 3 years I intend to invest over $6,000,000 into my farm. This is my plan.

Hi COLE. I’m an Australian farmer 63 winding down into retirement. In the 1970s and 80s there were 5 higher education colleges for farm managers. I attended one of those in 79/80. Of the 50 plus in my year at least 50 are still in the farming industry in some fashion and all are very successful and some even became industry leaders. We were taught an overview of everything and how to seek the experts in those fields for when we needed further knowledge or action. That education was able to prevent me from being duped of 3 million dollars by a large international energy company. Since then the government has closed 4 of those colleges down (they were government colleges) leaving only 1 private college for the whole country to train farm managers. They have doubled the number of students and still cannot service the demand for that course. It just seems the government doesn’t want any educated farmers anymore.

It is by design sadly -> so we will starve and the International Elites can rule over us. Look at the WEF and many other what they have planned. I admire farmers anywhere in the world as it is not easy. As a fellow Australian non farmer city person - your effort, knowledge and financial risks that famers take every year should be highly respected for the high importance food production really is for us all.

Your college education taught you how to find and receive this free information. It gave you the language, the vocabulary and the model of how to process a big amount of data. Without recognicing it you learned how to teach others, and you're great at it! You wouldn't know all this mathematic and percentage and interest stuff without proper education. You learned how to learn and how to apply that to farming. Just be so greatful and humble about having the hughe benefit of making it through college.🙏

Cole, (former college administrator here). I love your analytic skills in seeking out solutions. One of the purposes of a college degree (when I went to college in the 60's & 70's--the current curriculum may not be so focused) is to develop a mindset of finding and vetting appropriate information. My MBA program taught us to develop a team with the expertise needed for current and future opportunities and challenges. This is exactly what you have been doing even though your current challenges were not addressed specifically by your college program. Your finance and accounting skills, curiosity, and drive to succeed will benefit your family operation.

You continue to push the envelope of openness on YT, it's appreciated. Being a suburban boy with zero farm experience I'm blown away at all the moving pieces to keep a farm going and how much of it is out of your control. You are at the mercy of fossil fuel for diesel and fertilizer, you have no say about the markets and you spend countless hours with lawyers, accountants, bankers and insurance agents. And let's not forget Mother Nature! It all comes down to how you want to spend your time..........more employees, more work and time and less time with family. What brings you true joy? I would consider investing in solar/wind as tractors will eventually go electric, having a battery bank to charge them and many other energy uses on the farm. Consider experimenting with other crops as the demand for corn is going to decrease as demand for ethanol decreases.

I studied and did my normal end of school exams and achieved O levels which in england is good lol . 2 weeks later I never bothered picking up the results and have never needed them. My grandfather was German and he ran a big farm I always knew that I would be farming. My brother never really bothered with school but he was always working with our grandparents on the farm . He says it was all he needed to learn. Today he runs that farm and we help him. I do bookkeeping and help with the calves etc and can also run a tractor and grain cart and combine. Although I got MS and now can only do minor work but I keep going because I love being a farming family.

Excellent video!!! This has already been sent to 53 people I know. I’m 61 years old and talk to people every chance I get on the importance of learning how money works. If you don’t control money it will control you. Know the difference between an asset and a liability. It’s different for different businesses. An asset brings in income for you. A liability takes money away from you. If you purchase a car it takes money away from you it’s a liability for you, but for a bank having a loan for you the buyer is an asset. Why? Because they make money from you. It brings in interest therefore it’s an asset for them. Learn the Rule of 72. It’s basic and working in your life wether you like it or not. For or against you. Thanks Cole!!

Cole, I appreciate your soil pH lesson. For years I struggled with a mediocre lawn. I watered it carefully, not too much, not too little. I fertilized it 3 times a year and it still had brown patches and slow growth areas. About 2 years ago I researched on the internet (just as you suggested in this episode) "lawn care". I conducted a soil pH test and the truth was finally found. All I had to do was apply soil acidifier once and now I have the best looking lawn on the block. A few neighbors have complimented me on it. Now I fertilize twice a year and have a beautiful lawn. Less became more in fertilizing soil that was healthier to begin with. Next year I might apply another dose of soil acidifier though, municipal tap water is naturally alkaline and definitely has an effect on soil health over time.

Learning to learn. I studied Mechanical Engineering and Computer Programming at a community college. I became a fire and security alarm technician after I graduated and spent 27 years doing it for the same company. I made a decent living. What college did for me was it taught me how to think logically. How to solve problems to analyse a given situation and to teach myself how to learn. I think Cole did the same thing with his degree. College can teach you facts but it can also give you other skills like problem solving and analyzing scenarios that can transfer it to other fields like farming. Cole's example is he wants to grow his farm's business. His schooling didn't teach him how to do the things he needed to do with the farm but it gave him an understanding of business and a to realized that he could build that team to learn what is needed. He most likely didn't need to go to college to do this but it might have given him the thinking process to develop a plan and move it forward more quickly. Like he said it is the individuals decision to go to school or not. I know people that finished high school and started successful business. Where I'm trying to get to with this is you need to learn to learn. College or the school of hard knocks are both great ways to start learning, decide what is best for you.

As a technology teacher, I tell my students all the time, college ain't for everyone, if I was to do it all over, I'd Def go into the trades, plumber or electrician. I know many people who went into trades right out of high school and were making more monies than me, who was just starting out after 4 years of college. Tradesman and trades woman are in desperate need and Schools are starting to realize this and encourage trades rather than shun them like they have for the last 15ish years.
@coreybrueckner4032

I am a high school chemistry teacher and agree 100% that the trades are not given the same level of emphasis in schools as a post secondary option for students. I guarantee to become a master level in any trade (pipe fitters, electrician, plumber, etc) will have the same degree of organized, formal training (aka -“book learning”) administered by unions than an individual with a master’s degree will have. A successful professional or tradesperson will take it upon themselves to be constantly working to better themselves. Success does not only come out monetarily.

I am guessing that I am the only one in my graduating class from high school who is still doing what I always wanted to do. I have a lot of friends who went to college for 4, 5, 6 or more years who are cutting wood, digging clams or painting houses. They are so much happier now than when they were using the high-cost education. If a young persons goal is to make money, be a plumber, electrician or HVAC technicion.

Congratulations I listened to you quite intently on this one, so smart you are using your college on us but all the smarts about farming, that book started when you were about 5 , I bet. And now as a 25 yr. old farmer, I CAN'T even believe we met when you were 18. I love you, kiddo, and your whole family. Your Mom and Dad did a good job with you kids and the love of our Lord helps everyday. I remember how you would clean , clean and clean in the beginning moving forward , persistence. The video right before this one made me cry real tears of joy for you. You can stop cleaning up the farm. The heavens were smiling as well, the farm is now what he told you to do. Grandpa is so proud. Now today we get a 3 year plan, I'm not sure I'll see that one till the end, but I'll be rooting for you and your family everyday. ❤❤❤from Michigan (the mitten)

Not true. High Schools did not shut down Vo-tech programs down. Did teachers shut the programs down? No. Did administrators shut the programs down? Please pay attention to what I'm going to tell you! taking care of your soil : First plow your soil. Then feed it! If you need lime now is the time then compost, compost, compost. You say how? If you grow a crop of bean plants then plow them under they will give the soil nitrogen. You can get manure from your neighborhood farmers! All kinds of manure, cow, chicken, rabbit. Then you need saw dust, sand, charcoal and some kind of fertilizer. Fertilize according to what you plant. Corn is a very heavy feeder. Don't forget your fish oil for corn. You see? Also you don't have to plant all of your acers the first year! But remember to plant cover crops. Rye seed is one that I know is good. Good luck. Don't work too hard. Don't get discouraged. You might not be able to get everything you need the first year. Man farmers take years to develop a great farm. It takes patience and also money.

Cole, I am director of cyber security for a company that I work remote for... no college, with the exception of a 2 year school I went to right out of high school but couldn't finish due to family reasons. I make over 150/yr, but I have worked from desktop support all the way to here - completely self taught. I have to interface with people from the janitor to the board of directors, and deal with vendors discussing ROI over 5 years for software or tools I need. It can be done, but I stress to my kid (a senior in HS) that I played life on hard mode. That degree opens the door for you, true enough, but I have met people with degrees in computer science before that I wouldn't let rake my leaves.

There was only one class my daughter remembered, and it was a professor teaching about investing and talking about how much money he made on the side doing so. My. grandfather was a farmer in eastern Kansas, he had about 500 acres 30-40 years ago, a large sized farm at that time. They closed it down as my father had a company as a general contractor, but I learned so much in the few years I remember. I learned a lot from my fathers company as well. Learning a trade is a great way to go through life. Its rewarding work a lot of the time, and if you become self-employed, it can even be more rewarding. I have a property management company and own 60 rentals. I went to college for 2 years, never got a degree. The friendships and my experiences I learned a lot more from than my formal education. People have to be life long learners, and then apply what they've learned, and sometimes, you have to go out on a limb and try new things that you may not have learned.

I am a full-time basic cattleman and also raises crops and I always say we know enough about everything to be just a little bit dangerous. We are sometimes veterinarians sometimes equipment operators sometimes agronomists sometimes mechanics sometimes we are electricians sometimes we are carpenters there's a lot of people in this world anymore that just do one thing and they do it well but that's all they do is one thing I'm kind of glad that I learned a little bit about everything and I'm glad that you see that too we need more young people with your attitude!

Cole. College is about 2 things. The “things” you learn is gaining information. The most important thing you gain in college is”education.” Education trains you to think… to solve problems… to wonder and seek answers. If you think about it, you are way ahead of your peers. Also, please don’t confuse money with contentment. Contentment comes with doing the things that Jesus Christ has called you to do. That’s what life is all about.

When I was growing up they pushed TV ads that you have to go to college to be someone. Now they think going to college gives you brain power or IQ somehow. Funny some of best minds in this world never even finished school. Brain power is something you're born with not given to you with piece of paper. Going to school is learning "JOB SKILL" and you grow from that. Having degree, PHD and etc doesn't make you smarter than homeless guy on the corner. I have degree so freaking what and I work in the trades. We have severe shortage of people and getting worst. Problem with colleges now is they are taking advantage of student loan program. Most of my class that went to collage are not even the field they went to school for. Spent a ton of money and not using that degree. There are plenty of trade jobs that make over 100k

Hey Cole, you ought to let your dad give you a hand? I mean..., as you very brilliantly illustrated in your last video you have amassed a multimillion-dollar 2,000-acre farming operation practically single handedly in the space of only about six years which, by the way, is very impressive, but why not give the old man (your dad) a chance to contribute to your further farming extravaganza, even though he will probably only get in the way, but anyway. I hope you know that I really do have the highest regard for you and that I'm just messing around. I do know this, if I was your dad or your mom, I would still be rolling on the floor laughing about your closing remarks in your last video while at the same time I would be bursting with the very greatest of pride. There is no way I will be around when you get to be your dad's present age and then view that video but oh boy, oh boy, I sure wish I could be.

Hmm, 2000 acres, good Iowa farm land $20,000/acre. When I graduated high school I didn’t have $40 million lying around. Instead I worked my way through college, got an engineering degree, and for 24 years designed - you got it, combines, so I am watching your channel. It does make me wonder who engineered your bin system? But a real problem is having $40 million to begin. Driving across Iowa today, I wondered how much does the lease on the wind turbines pay? College taught me how to learn, opened my eyes to consider more options and taught me how to carry a hard task to completion. Every person is unique and may need more knowledge of a specific topic to give them the complete package thus everyone gets something different from college. Everyone doesn’t need 4 years, but most need a little more than HS provides especially if they want to go into business for themselves. Community college is an awesome resource for many people.

The most simple answer is that a 10,000 person business requires 9,999 people that aren't running a business. In other words, these big business folks can't be what they are without the everyday worker. We have to have people who work trades. We can't be a strong society if we all go to a 4 yr college and everyone is training to be an office drone

Looks like someone should have gone to Iowa State for some agronomy classes. They have decades of testing and data on these things, if you don't know the questions to ask you will never get the correct answer. Rule number one in agronomy is get fertility in order rule 1A is pH and 2A is drainage. A little background in ag construction would help avoid a grain facility disaster in the making. You can wander around in the dark and eventually run into something or you can educate yourself and become enlightened. You are an example of learning by trial and error, that is great if you have the financial backing to survive, not so good if KZbin quits writing the checks. The pH issues are an example of decades of mismanagement, either someone was not taking soil samples, or they didn't know how to read them and relied on someone else for direction. Unfortunately relying on someone else can cost a fortune in experience and $$.

Guess we are going from the dump on trades, go to college world to the dump on college go to trades world. There is no reason theses paths through life have to be competitive. Figure out what you like doing and find the best way to learn how to be successful at it. Some will just want to jump in and learn by trial and error. Others will want to study, plan and then try. If you can make a living and raise a family good for you, it doesn’t matter how you “learned” to do it. If you can’t that’s on you. It’s not your teachers fault, what school you did or didn’t go to, what skill you did or didn’t learn. You have to make it happen.

Very well presented breakdown of farming economics in general. One thing you should think about when it comes to cover crops, they not only add nutrients to the soil, but more importantly. they hold the nutrients already in the soil in place as in the cover crop helps prevent nutrient runoff with rain and wind erosion. There are multiple benefits for cover crops if the farm operation can support it.

Increasing the size of your farm by large amounts depends on if people like Bill Gates and foreign investors don't buy up all the farmland first. Gates owns almost 300,000 acres, and foreign investors own 37.6 million acres of American farmland. Add to that, the fact that America loses about 2 million acres of farmland every year to other purposes, corporate owned farms are increasingly buying up family owned farms and the fact that the government wants to drastically increase the acreage of solar farms.

So you have the right idea, however, I want to point out a couple things. 1. pH is the measure of free hydrogen ions in the soil occupying the soil CEC. It’s actually the carbonate component that binds to the free hydrogen, the calcium replaces the hydrogen on the CEC. The process by which this occurs is that the Carbonate (Ca(CO3)-) reacts with the hydrogen to form CO2 and H2O. 2. While you will generally see a Ca:Mg ratio out of whack with low pH, high magnesium isn’t the cause of your high pH. You have two distinct, separate, and yet related issues. Low pH and high Mg. Ag Lime will raise your pH and add lime to the soil, however, it won’t remove or tie i up Mg in any way. In really tight, high Mg soil, you need to use gypsum, which is Calcium Sulfate (Ca(SO4)-). Gypsum will not affect pH in any way, but will flush Mg out of the soil in a similar way lime does to H+ ions. The sulfate reacts with Mg to form Magnesuim Sulfate (epsom salts) and replace the Mg with Ca on the soil CEC. I would love to discuss your ideas and plans, I’m 31, farm on a 1st generation farm in Southern IL, use cover crops, promote soil health and operate an excavation company. I sell nothing, but I enjoy sharing the knowledge I have through my training and time spent as an agronomist. Feel free to message me anytime and I’ll give you my number. That goes for anyone else wanting a better understanding of the nutrient interactions within soil and how to address specific challenges. Love networking and helping other young motivated farm operators!
