I just watched this video with a Huge smile on my face. As child i used to draw alot then i got interested into Computer Graphics and 3d modelling. I was really happy when I create my first GTA SA mod it was a car with really bad ratio compared to other objects in the game, but i knew that this is something i wanted to do. however I never got any support from my family. And when my old PC died that was it for me. Eventually i stopped drawing too. But now im at position in my life were I can spend some money and time on the things I love. So i have enrolled into art class a week ago. Hopefully i would be able reconnect with my younger creative side and then move into the world of CG art 😀.

I've been so discouraged about going into 3d art because, even though I know everyone has to start somewhere, never seeing it just makes it so hard to relate and it becomes scary at times honestly. Great video Zach, thanks for sharing! I started using 3D software in about 2006 for CAD classes and then was told about Maya which I used for a few months before switching to Blender by early 2008. Been using it almost every day since (except of course for some ragequits in the first year!)

@@m.s.8712 Das stimmt schon. Mir würde es natürlich auch besser gefallen, wenn er seine Videos noch auf Deutsch machen würde. Ich kann die Beweggründe allerdings voll und ganz nachvollziehen. Wenn man gut Englisch spricht und man von seiner künstlerischen Arbeit leben muss, dann wäre es nicht besonders schlau, sich auf den deutschsprachigen Raum zu begrenzen. :)

I just like to do photo manipulations mainly with Adobe Photoshop and i have still a lot things to master, but i can appreciate your story and amazing work! I know it's hard and a lot people will see only the amazing work at the current moment, but i will also congratulate you for the time spent in front of the computer practicing! I know from experience that it's hard to be self-taught, but it is a passion, so you do it!

Holy shit man, that's what perseverance and dedication do to talent. Ich bin wirklich beindruckt von deinem Durchhaltevermögen! Ich hatte eine ähnliche Faszination für die Programme, die du genannt hast, bin aber nie genug am Ball geblieben :) Zur Zeit spiele ich mit Blender 2.8 rum, da ich versuche, PS1 oder Megaman Legends mäßige Grafiken zu erzeugen :) Was für dich Blender und co. sind waren für mich der RPG Maker 2000 - RPG Maker XP und vorallem Photoshop. Jetzt bin ich aber irgendwie selbstständiger Programmierer xD Schöne Grüße

Great story! I was super interested in 3D modeling and animation in high school-- I remember spending tons of time playing with LightWave 7, reading through a tutorial book I saved up for, and following along. I remember trying to render a simple 2 minute animation for a class project with my friend-- we pooled together all of the crappy Pentium II and III computers we could find (using LightWave's Network Renderer)-- each frame still took like 20 minutes+, so we ended up having to turn in our project with 3/4ths of it rendered without textures/lighting... lol. I remember downloading Blender 2.3x, couldn't figure out how to navigate the viewport, then immediately closed it and went back to LightWave :D Back then, we had dial-up internet, but I couldn't use it often. But I think I was also way more productive. Nowadays, I feel like it's really easy for me to get bogged down watching a ton of tutorials/videos, but not actually learning the information or practicing it myself.

this is such an important message. i remember when i was learning 3d art in highschool early on and it was really discouraging to see all the professionals making such amazing images and i was making horrible pieces of geometry with poles everywhere. it takes time. ive moved on from 3d art since then to other things that take just as much dedication, but i have no doubt that if i had stuck with it, id be much closer to where I wanted to be by now.

I want to learn blender or zbrush so bad but it's soooooooooo unintuitive/clunky interface imo, it took me a couple weeks to figure out how to map a texture to a pre-existing model without having to look it up (like doing it on my own after learning how)

If you're born in Brazil you would really see how's it like been poor. I was only capable of having my first computer when I was 19 years old, working hard to buy a very obsolete pc, a 586 computer. No chance to study or dedicate myself due to the hard task of working all day only for having what to eat. By the way I really know that Brazil isn't the worst country.
