Something that has always stuck with me is videogamedunkey saying something along the lines of: the value of a critic's voice lies within its consistency. While he was talking about game critics, the statement totally holds for other reviewers too - biases are human and totally fine as long as they're properly communicated. Imagine a reviewer that has the literal opposite taste of you - everything they review highly, you hate. As long as you know that, you can still make accurate buying decisions based on that critic's opinion - whatever they hate, you check out.

Great vid. You’re the reason that pushed me over the edge to go for the Meteors back then while researching. May be my favorite set. Interesting to see your preference being almost all BAs. Was surprised to realize that this basshead’s top 5 are all unique from each other. Meteors (all BA), Bravado mkII (Tribrid), Scarlet Mini (Hybrid), Legato (2DD), Rinko (DD/mini planar). My next may be different as well, the Planar Timeless 2 (if released soon and has the elevated bass rumored). Cheers Mark

One thing I would welcome in reviews is, after the reviewer has given their description and analysis of the product, to say whether they enjoyed listening to music with it or not and what type of music they feel it is well suited to. I mention this because my favourite IEM is not my best sounding, a thing isn't great simply because I like it.

To be conscious about my biases and how to work with them, when writing reviews, is my main point on the way to better reviews. Even after almost 10 years of writing, i still do occasionally catch myself doing something bad. Something, that is solely driven by my point of view. And when i dont like some headphones or keyboard i am writing about, i do have to tame myself to not be affected and move on. So i very much get your point :) highly recommend to anyone, to think about such stuff.

You helped push me over the edge to finally spend that much on the S8's. I need to try more, but my bias is bang-for-the-buck, and tight resolution. It was the same in my excessive car audio days. I'm willing to put up with the EQ for analytical listening now. Granted the tuning is pretty unacceptable out of the box. But my listening is largely vocal-heavy EDM plus ridiculously muddy metal. If nothing else, I've been very happy with them and I think they've got a few more years in them, until there's another seriously compelling IEM for me.

I'm heavily biased towards Moondrop, Starfield was the first IEM I purchased myself, Kato was the first IEM I tested because of a friend that got me into IEM's and then recent won the Beautiful World which is now my best IEM I own currently. So for me it's so hard to brand out and judge other stuff fairly because Moondrop has been my entire benchmark for IEM's and I know I could happily stay like that because of things like the S8, Variations and Solis 2 that are endgame IEM's. I have recently tried other brands like Tangzu, Truthear, 7hz, KZ, QKZ, FiiO and such but I always go back to my tried and true Moondrop. I mean the VDSF target Moondrop use it my ideal tuning so it's hard to like other sounds. I use to like more Harmen tuned but recently prefer the less bass and more forward mid/treble region. I have a majority Female Japanese library so it fits well. I think for a lot of people this is the case, you have your music taste, you have your go to IEM/Brand and then when you do brand out its hard not to directly compare to those. You almost need to separate the two. A good way is to have testing tracks that aren't in your regular library of music and so avoid using your favourite IEM in a comparison unless it's warranted by being similar in some way or price.

We all are biased. I have 4 IEMs I used the most: - Blon BL30 to sleep with coz it's the cheapest and it's not gonna be heartbreaking if I damaged it. That's single DD - TRN VX Pro is my daily driver and carry around everywhere. That's 8 BA + 1 DD - For serious listening, I have 2 : Shure e2c (Single DD) and TRN BA15 (15 BAs). Because these 2 are the most revealing the details I want to hear. With these IEMs, you can easily guess my preference is slight V-Shaped tuning. I can tell you that it's not coz they are all neutral sounding because of the cables and eartips I paired them with, except for Blon BL30 which stayed W-shaped tuning.

This is not bias, it's simply your taste. You like these types of earphones because they make the type of sound you like. There is nothing wrong with that, you like what you like. Just don't forget that other people may like different kind of things, for them the other things will be the best.

I have tended to think that reviews of purchased products are more susceptible to bias than those on-loan, regardless of whether they're loaned from a manufacturer or a friend or community member. Now, I can understand that bias can come into play when you have a personal or even business relationship with a brand, but I still think for most people, you buy something and you want to believe you didn't just waste your own money, or you suffer from buyer's remorse and feel kinda let down or bitter about it, and you'll take your anger/disappointment out in your review of a product.

My personal bias is towards a dynamic driver configuration. But I'd be the type to say that a hybrid is the best configuration when it comes to iems because they provide the best of both worlds. My reasoning for the dynamic driver bias is because most of my earbuds are 1 dynamic driver ones. Also, I like a little boominess in my headphones.

Personally I'd favour reviews of iems more if they talk about size and length of the nozzles of iems as my right ear canal is narrower than my left ear canal and most "come with tips" don't fit or feel comfortable with my ear canals. Like currently I love the comfort I get from the kinera celest ryui but would prefer if they sounded more like the moondrop blessing 3 or the moondrop katos...especially the depth of the sound room (bit like difference in listening to music on cheap headphones compared to say in person live).

Treating a sound preference as a bias may fit a dry definition of bias, but I'd say that the term usually gets brought in with the connotation of biases being something that illegitimately affect an evaluation whereas a person's preferences have a basic legitimacy as the foundations of subjective evaluations. Like, if someone decided to make things explicit and used their preferences to develop a scoring rubric, calling out a bias in the scores for things aligning with the rubric's criteria would be a little silly.

Based on the decluttering content I watch I think it's harder for people to get rid of things they actually paid for than free things, even if they like the free things better. So if the thought exercise is what would you get rid of, the paid for aspect doesn't necessarily impact validity in a normal review scenario since most people will share that subconscious bias for whatever they purchase.

Your top 5 IEMs have varying sound signatures, I kinda expected everything to be bright tilted because that's your personal taste. Maybe I'm more biased than you because my current top IEMs (Supernova, Tea 2 and Heyday.) all have a common theme: balanced sound signature. The thing I love about your reviewing style is that you don't knock down an IEM just because it's tuned way differently than your own tuning curve, IE: Bassy IEMs don't always get a 1 or 2 star. Everyone is ultimately biased, but consistency is key

Good question. My first big spend on audio was for speakers, but that didn't turn into a hobby / obsession I think because of all the room variables that come into play with speakers. Also it's hard to collect speakers. As for headphones vs. IEMs, it's probably two main factors: (1) There's just a lot more going on in the IEM world so it naturally turned into more of a constant interest / source of KZbin content, and (2) I historically have another bias for miniature things. I like small cameras, small Transformers, small cars, small motorcycles, and small audio things. How about you?

@@SuperReview I used to have a full blown speaker set up when I was a younger man. But over the years the components began to die and eventually the speakers became end tables. I miss that system, but due to life circumstances I wasn't able to replace it. So for the longest time I just used a Bluetooth speaker and the rather good system in my car (it came that way). About two years ago I visited my brother and one of the things we both love is music and share new music finds all the time. He has a modest two channel speaker system, but to me it was glorious compared to my little Bluetooth speaker. I realized how much I missed hifi audio. After talking for awhile, knowing that I live in a townhome, the challenges of room variables, and that my wife is not predisposed to my love of music, he suggested some good headphones. This lead to watching reviews and reading articles and I got hooked. I purchased the Sennheiser HD560s and love them. I also picked up the Meze 109 Pro and love them too (I know they're not your favorite). Then I tried some other headphones, but found them uncomfortable. I decided to try IEMs and started with the modest 7hz Salnotes Zero. Nice sound, very uncomfortable. Then tried a few others and now have four sets and really love this aspect of the hobby. It occured to me one day, "I have a better hifi system in my pocket than most people have in their living room." I also like small things and simple living and headphones and now IEMs fit the bill. Sorry for the long answer, but that's my story. Do you ever listen to your speakers anymore?

@SuperReview I used to have a big speaker system I loved, but some circumstances changed and one by one components began givng out. For a long time, a Bluetooth speaker and my pretty good car stereo had to do. My brother and share a love for music and frequently talk about new music we have found. Visiting him one day (he lives in another state), we were listening to music on his modest two channel speaker system. To me, it was glorious and I realized how much I missed hifi audio. Knowing I live in a townhome and have some big challenges with room acoustics, as well as a few other things, he suggested headphones. I went on KZbin, watched some reviews and bought a dongle dac/amp and Sennheiser HD 560s, which I love. I tried some other headphones and got another pair as well and a decent desktop amp. But I found a lot of headphones hot and uncomfortable. I had seen reviewers talk about IEMs and decided to give them a shot. Started very small and now I have four modest sets, but improving with each one. I never thought I'd like IEMs, but I do. And like you, I appreciate small things (I have a box of N Scale trains), as well as simplicity and not a lot of clutter. It occured to me the other day, "I have a better hifi system in my pocket than most people have in their living room!" That's my story. Thanks for asking!

Nice so you've heard the Serratus. I have to choose between those & Rikus GAS3 this weekend. Didn't know if the 4.4 was worthy of going after? I ask since Serratus runs up to 300ohm.
