Hey Michael, great stuff as always! Please reconsider though and allow purchases of new books (but not reading them) during this lengthy process of reading 500. Books these days, especially comic omnibuses quickly go out of print..you might miss some good stuff!! Oh, and Roger..Michael being so humble and cultured won't remind viewers to like his videos,so we rely on you for the reminder. We appreciate your masters efforts and want to see his channel grow. Thanks buddy!

I believe Michael had initially carved out an exception for comic book reprint volumes when he started this as the Read What You Own Challenge - such collections count neither as purchases nor as books read.

This is a ten- to twenty-year project and to refrain from buying books for that long is unthinkable. You need to set up a parallel challenge. 500 TBR one one side, 500 Book Haul on the other ... for each book you read, you can buy one. Or two. Maybe three or four or five. Who knows?

That’s a lot of horror. A lot of cool looking stuff, though. When you read the girl next door, try not to think about the fact that it’s based on a true story, which makes the experience all that much more harrowing.

Monsters Unleashed, what a great cover, its like a movie poster. If youre planning to devour the Anno Dracula books then treat yourself to Anno Dracula 1895 : Seven Days in Mayhem .. you can buy it, its not a novel its a comic book collecting the mini series written by Kim Newman and part of the Anno Dracula series.

You have missed out. Ketchum is one of my favorites and Off Season is a gripping page-turner. So is Red. It has something in common with Psycho, which you will figure out. It is one of those relentless juggernaut of justice stories like Les Miserables or Taken (the move with Liam Neeson). The movie version of Red is pretty good. I finally picked up The Beetle today. I had Richard Marsh's The Haunted Chair (Ash Tree Press), but no more. Blackwater is another favorite. I have the earlier paperback edition of Witch House, which I read recently. Monarch Books, 1962. First paperback. Today, I also I picked up a copy of the complete Imaro stories, thanks to your recommendation. Dr. Cyclops by the inimitable (?) Will Garth, The Greatest adventure by John Taine, and that copy of Roger Ackroyd I have been wanting to read! Thanks for another great preview.

See, I might have told you that you'd get more read if you stopped wasting time telling us what you're going to read. But had you not done that, you wouldn't have shown Occult Detective Magazine #8, The Angry Dead, & A Solemn Curfew, and I am very grateful that you did. I'm very much looking forward to hearing your opinions when you do read them. Interestingly, another publisher was looking at our issues of Occult Detective Magazine at Chillercon in May, & he told us, "These aren't magazines, these are books!" so I definitely think they count. 🙂 The disadvantage of sending books through Amazon/KDP (the advantage being that it's much cheaper for us to send them that way) is that we can't include useful information sheets. So here's some additional information. Rosemary Pardoe is a well known M.R. James scholar, and was the editor & publisher of Ghosts & Scholars magazine for a very long time. The magazine is still running, and she still contributes, but she stepped down as editor a few years back, I believe. In the 80s, she had a whim to try her hand at writing fiction, & the 12 stories that comprise The Angry Dead were the result. It was published under the pen name Mary Ann Allen, and sold out of its limited printing of 750 copies. Ro Was constantly being asked where people could find a copy at a sensible price, and eventually I offered to reprint it as an ODM special. Ro revised all of the stories for this new edition, but she refuses to write any new ones, claiming she'd got that out of her system, & was happy to stick with non-fiction from now on. Bev Allen is a very dear friend, whose writing career has been severely curtailed by I'll health, and her habit of immediately killing off any publisher who dares to put out one of her books. We think her peculiarly British take on the weird (I'm tempted to spell it 'wyrd') is wonderful, so we decided to brave the curse. ODM itself started out life as Occult Detective Quarterly, and was published by the late Sam Gafford's Ulthar Press until he was taken from us by a massive heart atack. John Linwood Grant & I didn't want to let the magazine die, and my partner, Jilly Paddock pointed out that Ulthar Press had already accepted a bunch of stories for the next issue (#6) & we were publishing her books under our own Cathaven Press... You're an HPL fan, so I hardly need to explain that to you. 🙂 I did insist on dropping the 'Quarterly' from the title, which was prescient, as the pandemic hit pretty much as soon as we got going. Since then, another heart atack (John this time, but thankfully not fatal, has served to slow us down even more, but we hope to have #9 out soon. & we'll be sure to send you a copy.
