Great review, I just got my SSC819 partially on the strength of your review. One other niggle I would add, IMO is that the default position of the 6 o’clock subdial indicator is for the battery charge level rather than ‘zeroing’ at the 12 o’clock position when the chronograph is not engaged. Sure, many people may not care, but I’d prefer as much symmetry as possible when I’m not running the chrono.

If they make these dimensions on an automatic like the 63mas it would be a knock out for seiko. I have the 813 and it's an absolute keeper!

I like the comparison with the Speedmaster (rather than the Daytona), and you point out all the things that make the Seiko *better* than your Omega in day-to-day (or vacation) use: 30-day power reserve (vs hand wind), 100m water resist (vs 30m), 39mm wearability (vs 42mm), sapphire crystal (vs Hesalite), and date function (vs none), as well as the things making it worse - 1hr chrono vs 12hr chrono (i.e., the "useless" 24hr dial found on most Seiko chronos). I have an older mecaquartz Seiko SSB045P1 chrono with a black dial that similarly has greater power reserve (3yr), 100m WR, 41mm wearability, and date... as well as the tachymeter protected under the crystal on a chapter ring and a mechanical "flyback" reset on the chrono, but it too has its faults such as the "useless" 24hr dial (which technically gives you military time). My SSB045 looks and wears great, but has a mineral crystal (with scratches 😞) and poor readability due to use of slender silver hands and no lume on the dial or hands - both of which are clearly solved by the SSC819.

It’s somewhat subjective - I actually like it that the right dial affords the wearer military time, as well as its imperceptible but constant sweep rather than ticking over every hour.

I have a Seiko SSB373P1 black case with a rubber/canvas green strap which is a mecaquartz but does feature a 12 hour subdial. Love the watch,comfortable,accurate,reliable,actually i have it for about 2 years and i like it more now than when I bought it. I sometimes wear it on a "camel" strap,the kind that have a couple of stitches sewn in either side of your wrist and it looks really good too.

Much better than the Lunar Pilot in terms of a Speedmaster alternative. I’ve worn one and wasn’t a fan, felt too light and cheap. I’m a big fan of that white dial tho 🔥

The matte black one with the dark olive dial is just ‘French chef’s kiss’ . . . Near perfect thing, particularly at its price point. If the crown(s) was / were screw down it _would_ be perfect. I actually really like the sunken digits in regard to how deep they’re set in their window (to accommodate the solar cells), and the good hefty weight of the thing feels comfortably ‘masculine’ to me. Only caveat is the difficulty in finding one with the timer needle perfectly centered at 12:00 rather than being misaligned slightly on either edge of the 12:00 indice, as well as a properly squared date. I ended up in three shops before I found a perfectly produced one.

I don’t like that visible wire thing going through the middle of the subdials. I believe Citizen manage to do without such a thing on their Solar charged watches, why not Seiko? I’d also prefer those subdials to be all the same size, rather than that shrunken one at 6 o’clock. That it’s Quartz doesn’t really bother me, I’m coming round to those.

People often setup meeting and talk in military time at work so having the mil time on there is useful in some cases. Saves having to do some math for those of us that don’t constantly use it. :-)

Agreed with the 24hr feature. Pretty useless. And the date window is way too small. A cyclops in the crystal would be handy.

You have been missing out my friend. I use to only wear automatics, luxury automatics, but I got tired of having to adjust my watch every single week as I'm a real dick for being on time. Now I'm wearing quartz watches only and it's such a joy to be on time every time without fuzz.

The 24hr sub dial is a useless feature and so many watches now have it. How about the 1/20th second dial instead like the 7A series, much more interesting and fun.

Actually Seiko had a watch like this in the 1960s (called the panda) way way before Rolex Daytona. Rolex copied the design and the mechanics.. Seiko believed the mechanical movement wasn't as accurate as it should and stored the over 100 patents. Seiko's r&d is deep and ALL their parts are made in house versus Rolex their dial hands and bezel are made from an independent agency. Rolex took many of seiko's inferior patents as Rolex is looking towards fashion while Seiko is going for more accuracy as in swimming, slalom, racing. While rolex is in wimbledon with no urgency in time. Seiko, in other words, is a over engineered design no watch maker can compete.

Great watch overall, I just struggle with the poor legibility of the elapsed minutes. The 60-min scale is too small. Perhaps 30-mins would have been better.
