I got to see the Martin Mars up close fighting a fire at a lumber mill back sometime between 1997-99 in Port Alberni. I climbed up on a railway car on a siding and watched as the Mars came straight at me. When it dumped its load of sea water on the fire I could feel the spray as it passed by me and went back for more water in Alberni Inlet. I will never forget that day!!

For those complaining about “Video quality” please remember he explained it was all recorded in 2008 at the Loggers Convention so that’s what equipment produced in those days. Also, complaints about inability to understand those voices spoken by pilots & air traffic . . . Sounded about normal to me . . . As long as the pilot understands what is said is all that matters.

Roy Copeland is sitting at my father’s desk. My Dad was her flight engineer in the early 1950’s. He was stationed out on Oahu where I was born in ‘52. He was an Aviation Machinists Mate, Chief Petty Officer. At that time the job was weather observation on what was called the “Weather Triangle” They flew from Hawaii to Adak, Alaska, the to Alameda, Calif., then back to Honolulu. About 18 hours per leg. He was very proud of his time with her as the final duty of his 28 years in the Navy.

If you are a radial engine fanatic, then you need to purchase Henry Tenby's "Martin Mars, Visit to Richmond 2010. I purchased this DVD back in 2013, and for me, it still sets the standard when it comes to the power and nuances of the Martin Mars radial engine sounds. Note that this DVD was filmed from the exterior, not from the aircraft's interior. Still, for me, the radial engine sounds on this DVD are the bomb!

I would say every news reporter in Canada would’ve been interested in being on board. They would’ve had a list with 1000 names on it.
