Thank-you. I made the easy mistake of putting the CPU the wrong way back into the plastic clamshell (It's not clear at all which way it goes unless you watch an unboxing) and bent a few corner pins in the process. Razor blade got them mostly straight and into the socket first try. Such a relief when it booted up fine.

I've used two razor blades in the past. One on each side of the problem pin going right down the lines of pins on each side. Keeping the blades as straight up as possible, I pinched the blades together using the surrounding pins as a guide for straight. If needed, rock the pinched blades back and forth ever so slightly. I've rescued many (older less pin dense) CPUs that way. Good video!

Its much easier if you do not hover your hands in the air. Rest your wrist on something firm so your hand is supported. Then all you need to do is make small movements with your fingertips and its very precise. Don't try and pull it back in to shape in one go, you can easily pull it too far and you have to push it back the other way risking it breaking. I just use a little screwdriver with little rocking movements with my fingertips to ease it back in to shape a little at a time. Razer blade is handy to line up multiple pins. On a really bad bend I will heat it up a little with hairdryer/hot air gun as its a little more forgiving. At the least, a good light and free standing magnifying glass is needed but I use my 1080p camcorder on a makeshift vertical stand and plugged into my tv. Makes it much easier to see.

The CPU is the brain of the PC so when you think about it a CPU swap is like a brain transplant and any damage can potentially result in failure or brain damage, so when the CPU is damaged and you try to fix it it's like performing brain surgery if you bend back the pins without breaking them the surgery is a success, but like you said bend them back and forth and you risk breaking those pins and the surgery could result in failure and total brain failure, that said here's my sad story. I recently bought a full size ATX board to upgrade to, first thing I did wrong in removing my 2 year old Ryzen 7 1700 CPU, was taking the cooler off with the case vertically, but the real dumb thing was to take out the CPU without laying the case flat, you probably can guess what happened next, lost control of the CPU and it hit part of the motherboard and case I think and 2 or 3 pins got bent, didn't realize it and tried to install it into the Moro and it didn't work at first it was because I hadn't jumped the ground on the board, I had the board on the box it came in to test it, anyhow I jumped it but still no post so I check and sure enough pins are bent, I don't remember much after that except going online looking for solution to straightening bent pins, one said use jewelers screw diver another said use a real thin credit card and than I found Jayz2cents video where he purposely drops a Ryzen CPU to use a method with a Razor blade that straightens them and it works, so I tried it the only problem is all I had was a safety razor and broke one pin after the other, the next day I was able to get a angled razor like in the video and it straightened most of the pins, but many more broke off, 3 days later I've broken at least 25 pins and I can't fit the CPU in the socket to even see if it will work, in the video he did break a pin and many pins are either reserved or redundant so there is a very slim chance the CPU may still, work, by the way jewelers and experience PC can repair broken pins it's a micro soldering process, but it costs like $5 a pin, not every pin I broke may be necessary, I did save as many as I can in case there is a chance the CPU somewhat works, one trick although not recommended since it might damage your motherboard, my micro atx I was swapping out of has a bad sata, one trick is to put pints into socket where they are missing on the CPU, but that trick doesn't always work, anyhow I'm going to keep plugging along and see if I can get what pins are left, and there are far more left than broke off to fit in the socket and see what happens, I was able to get a deal with New Egg for a new Ryzen and it should arrive in the near future, but I'm gun shy now and I'm hoping I can get my local PC repair shop to the CPU install and mobo swap, but if they can't I damn well will treat this like the brain transplant it should have been treated like the first time, so learn from my dumb mistake guys and don't take any risks, after all it's not always easy to find another brain lol.

I have the exact 3 bended pins on a corner. I swear it came in like this, but the company I bought it from is simply blaming me; "user-abuse" as they call it. No warranty, nothing. They offered to try and bent it back for me, but whatever happens in that process, they are not liable. As if I have a choice. From now on, everything of worth I will be opening with camera and I can advice that to everyone. NOTE: I bought components 2 months apart from each other, because money, so when I found out my Ryzen had 3 bent pins, I already owned the product for ~50 days, yeah stupid to not check first I know. My son presented me with a Ryzen 5 3600 that he's removed from his computer and dropped it, bending several pins. So, I'm gonna have a shot at straightening about 8 pins and possibly replacing at least one. Thanks for your information. I think that using the vice is a darned good idea.
@TimsComputerRepair4 жыл бұрын
"Replacing one" wow... let us know how that goes lol. Thanks for commenting.
@SteinerHaus4 жыл бұрын
@@TimsComputerRepair The bent pins ( 21 of them) were not too difficult to straighten. There was one that was bent flat (90 degrees) that was a challenge. (I used a small vice to hold the CPU and a small LED lamp for illumination. Along with a 3X magnifying lens.) That pin and one other snapped off when I gently worked toward getting them vertical. So I have a total of three pins that broke off of the CPU. I'm looking for a source of pins from another CPU before I try soldering the broken ones. At least the "pin pads" stayed in place, so it may be possible to replace the broken pins. I think that two of them are "place keepers" but the third one is going to be the real deal breaker. The CPU project is on hold for a while.
@AmazonFinds.2k4 жыл бұрын
@@SteinerHaus How did it go?
@SteinerHaus4 жыл бұрын
@@AmazonFinds.2k Well, due to the number of pins that were bent and the three that snapped off, I'd list my attempt as a Failure. Son replaced CPU and heat sink with a back up older model and I acquired a big heat sink.
@AmazonFinds.2k4 жыл бұрын
@@SteinerHaus Yeah i understand it didn't work out, nice try tough. If your CPU has 4-5 or even 10 bend pins it usually is possible to save. But 21 is a bit too much as with every pin you bend you risk breaking it.

Depends on which pins are bent; there are many "negative" or ground, pins for redundancy. So, if it is just a couple of those that are bent, there may be no negative impact bc of there being many other negative pins on the CPU.
