Well done, it's such a daunting journey! Big hugs ❤️

God, our stories are so similar...down to the details (raised by bio mother who also passed away 8 years ago, raised by maternal family, no name for dad on birth certificate, and became obsessed with the search). Good luck with your search, keêp your head high and your determination up!

I'm adopted and got a 23 and me test about 6 months ago but I've been apprehensive in turning it in because I'm afraid of emotions it'll bring up. I'm really most interested in knowing my ethnicity but am afraid I'll start looking for more. Anyways just thought I'd share. Good luck on the rest of your journey..

When I did my test, I had put down what my mother told me my father's name was. I was even contacted by his family members and they exchanged information with me. So, when matches started come up, they were matching surnames in his side of the tree, but they were not matching in the right way. People that should have been matching really closely were distant matches and people who should be distant are close matches. So, for years I am working on it, building multiple trees off of matches who have small or no trees. And they are all matching to each other in two distinct groups. One group is all cousins to who I thought was my father and the others are not related to him at all. but they both have really strong matches to me and not to my mother, who I also eventually tested. So, I am doing this and I know that there is a non-paternity event somewhere, I just don't know where. And then one day, I am just working on trees, working my way down from a common ancestor of one of these two groups of people when I recognize a name from the other group. These two got married and it is a relatively recent marriage. So, I investigate them further. Obviously, neither is my parent, because I match my mom and she doesn't match them. So, they have to be at least grandparent. And it has to be on the paternal side. That is the only way to join these two separate groups of matches, where I am the only common match. This leaves only two possibilities. Either this couple had my named father and gave him up for adoption or my mother slept with another man and just won't tell me. My named father is dead and so are his parents, so it is impossible to figure that part out. So, I am left with the male children of these paternal grandparents. So far, I have only found one and right now he is the most likely candidate. He also just happened to have grown up in the same part of the same city that I was conceived and raised in. So, either my mom doesn't know who my dad really is or he was adopted by a distant cousin. Because, remember, like I said in the beginning, his family tree does match up with the family trees of these other matches to me. He shares surnames. And he was also born in a completely different state than the rest of his siblings and there is a 6 year gap between him and his older siblings. And that is where I currently stand. He is no longer here, I have no known siblings from him and the other possible man; none of his children nor he has taken a test with ancestry, myheritage, or ftdna and not on gedmatch either. Sorry this is so long, but you have the closest relatable story to what I am going through right now. Maybe one day I will find the gumption to contact this man and ask if he will take a test.

Amazing story! You really lucked out with the support of multiple genealogists and it sounds like you have picked up the genealogy bug yourself. Have you received the results back?

I really did! I'm so thankful for their help! I have! He is my father! I tried to film a video on it today but I'm struggling to put words to all the emotions but it will be up soon.

Awesome story. How long after you got the email that ur DNA was being tested did you get the results?
@jillashley10067 жыл бұрын
kayla jones I tested during the Christmas rush and it took over 8 weeks. The man I tested got his back in around 5 weeks. I think typically it takes between 6-8 weeks. Just depends on how busy they are.

You "figure out" who your father is and falsely accuse the wrong man? Keeping your father (assuming she knew who it was) from you was a selfish, hateful act. A fathers influence might have made you more stable.
