Doing some math with my beloved Burroughs adding machine. From what I have found this model is from around 1910. I actually do use this occasionally for real life math. It works incredibly well.

Nice! I have a No.7, very similar to yours, just a couple more rows of numbers. Have you ever had the cover off your machine? If so, how do you do it. I have removed the four screws on the bottom, but something at the back of the machine is still holding the cover from fully releasing.

I'm glad to hear that. They are fascinating machines. And yes I've had the cover off many times. The trick is to remove the handle/lever. The way it works on my machine is that if you press the handle forwards while pulling it out and away from the side of the machine you will find the sweet spot or it clicks and comes loose. After that it's just a matter of lifting the cover straight up. There is a certain amount of jiggling to get it to slide free as you lift it up and away from the rest of the machine. Here is a video where I have the cover off but unfortunately it does not show me removing the cover. Let me know if you have anymore questions and I'd be happy to help. kzbin.infolqkBSufymQc?feature=share

Kinda cool. I found one of these gor 25 bucks. I need to "add" this counting machine to my vintage collection

Ha! Well said, I hope you can find a way of "adding" this one to your collection.

Fun video - hey - what's the serial number on your machine? Your machine doesn't have the red 'cancel' keys on the top, so I'm assuming it's a very early model

Thank you. I kind of forgot I made this video. I should really make another video showing this machine in much more detail. I checked and the serial number is 6X-158812.

I have exactly the same but 9 columns

Nice! These machines are beautiful. I hope that there are many of us out there that have the opportunity to own one. I can't even imagine having three more columns. That thing must be massive.

Do you have a key so you can unlock the cover to remove it ? I have an old Style No.4 (Class 1 ?)... I found a guy on the internet who made keys for the old Burroughs, simply made from a piece of steel tubing with two slots filed into the end. They are cool amazing old machines !

It does not have a key or well I don't have a key. The lid does come off after you remove the handle. There is what looks like possibly a keyhole in the bottom front center. But if that is a key hole then it has been in the unlocked position for as long as I have had the machine.

I'm guessing that you like this because it prints.

I like pretty much everything about it, but yeah the fact that it still prints is really cool.
