Professional dog groomer here. When dogs get really old and if their quicks (the blood vessel in the nail) wont receed back this will happen. Putting the dog through surgery to cut them back while they're under will help but at Maya's age probably be too risky. Try to get a nail file instead of clipping the nails. Itll get then a bit shorter and smoother for you.
