Many people have this same approach of digging in. I think that will get you pretty far because Go is a pretty simple language by design. There are non-obvious aspects of the language that you'll eventually want to know about, like escape analysis, but Go makes it pretty easy to develop a basic server app pretty quickly. I like that you can have a fairly complete app and not need a ton of third-party dependencies or possibly none at all.
