I'm still tending a few seedlings that made it through winter conditions, here in my zone 8A location. The Bacon, Poncho and Stewart trees have begun regrowing.

Thank you for your work and keeping track of how your avocados are doing. I hope others will be able to do similar experiments like this in the future for other fruit trees as well so we could know with more certainty what grows in zone 7B/8A and what cultivars are able to thrive in our climate, or at least survive/live. 😂🙏🏼 God bless.

It will be more beautiful if there is mature FRUIT hanging in these trees! 😛

I plan to wrap my fantastic avocado with freeze protection rope that's designed for keeping pipes from freezing. I haven't heard of anyone else doing this, and am not confident that it will work, but I believe it could be very useful if it does.

Another thing that could be tried is grafting avocados to a sassafras tree, which is a tree thats cold hardy to around zones 5 through 9, and is closely related to avocado trees. (I am not a grafting expert)

@@metalsplash310 I have considered that as well, although I think that pipe wiring is meant for indoor (basement) conditions. Another possibility is using an outdoor electric doormat. Maybe that's not too hot to use, wrapping it loosely around the trunk of a tree, and assume that warmth will creep up through the trunk.

There is some pipe wiring that's designed for being put on roofs to stop snow from accumulating.

Thanks for your detailed observations. What was the lowest you got down to this winter and roughly how long for?

This past winter was close to typical. There was one night that touched 10F. During January it's normal to be below freezing from after midnight, until daybreak. Probably the coldest phase was about 3 days in a row when I left the plants covered, with electric lighting active. By late February I removed the lights and just used covers.
