Thanks to your fantastic videos, today I went out and got a gigantic thick Bravo 2 in A2 with the green micarta handles. It will likely be a camping batonning knife for me as it is so heavy. Got a Swedish Firesteel to ride on the side. Got the two together for about $240, but I can tell this is a knife I'll take care of and hand down through the family (it's that good). It does have the firestriking ramp you dislike though.

From that beautiful collection I would take the knife exhibited in place 20 - minute 19:15 of the video - (or its twin in place 21, either of the two, since they are the same) to use in the camp kitchen, and add to my Original Puma Bowie 6376 for heavy forest and hunting tasks. Between both knives they cover the whole range of needs in the forest. Congratulations! Beautiful collection.

Hello Doctor, I know how much you like your Bark River Knives, and because of your video's, I too have two nice set of Bark River Knives, both set's start off with the Bravo 1, one set is in A2, and the other set is in 3V, I like them both, but I favor my 3V's a little more, this story would take too long for me to explain, but Busse knives, once they sell out, that's it, you never know if the knife will be available again, so you have to act quickly, I always wanted a 5"-6" knife, to compliment my set, but nothing was available until recently, and I finally got my wish, I got a Swamp Rat INFI, which is the INFI Ratmandu, excellent knife, one of my all time favorites, but before that, the only knife close to the 5"-6" knife blade was the Son of Badger, it's 4 3/4" blade, with a Saber Grind, and a convex secondary , it also has a very small choil, that is very functional, I hope you can make a video on the S.O.B., it just so happens, it became my favorite, camp/bushcraft/hunting knife, it's that good, it has a Satin Finish, and Black G-10 Handle, very comfortable. I actually like it better than my B.R's, and we know how great they make the handles, and knives, is there anyway you can make a video on the S.O.B., I just wish you could try it, so I can say I suggested it to Dr. V.

When I first starting seeing your video's, you convinced me to buy the Bravo 1. You made it sound like it was your favorite knife and the best thing out there. Now you changed your mind and are saying the Gunny is the best and the Fox River. I along with most people on here don't have the money to buy all the knives as you must have. So I'd appreciate it if you could make your final assessment so we could know which one is you favorite knife overall. I'm sure there are many other followers who value your opinion as well but don't want to buy every knife to "test" them out. Maybe do a video on each knife you have to show the best uses for each knife, i.e., skinning deer, bushcrafting, etc. Thanks.
@jariperho9 жыл бұрын
Why is your choice of knife dependent on someone else's opinion? Why would you even spend that kind of money without testing the knife yourself, especially if you only have the funds for one?
@flex933129 жыл бұрын
@ Jari Perho; How am I supposed to test the knife out if I don't have one? Or know of anyone who does? I value other people's opinion who have used the knife significantly and showed the value of the knife/product through extensive use and knowledge of the product. Why else look on KZbin or any other blogs, forums, review pages, to see what other have to say about any product? That's just ridiculous to even ask that question. Furthermore, I never said "I only have the funds to buy one," you're assuming that. And you know what they say about people who "assume"? I said, "I don't have the money to buy all the knives as you must have." And I wouldn't want every knife they sell either, I could only use one or maybe two at any given time for any reason that I could think of. Plus I own several other knives that I'm happy with and some I've never even used. So being able to "afford" more is none of "your" business, but since you "assumed" that I couldn't, I'll tell you directly what I'm going to do. I'll most likely buy a couple other Bravo 1's mostly for esthetic reasons, a Bravo 1.25 in stainless and with an orange G10 handle for a winter E.D.C and, cause I like the way it looks. And I'll most likely buy a Bravo 2 for esthetic reasons as well, along with a Gunny in Elmax steel for a white tail/ small gaming knife. And if I want another one at any other time, I may consider buying more if I so desire to. Honestly, I posted the video cause I was tired of hearing him complain so much about a knife, he has so many of. So I was thinking this thought in my head one day as I was watching his videos. How many people have bought these knives because they respect him and value his opinion. I have read multiple and multiple people on KZbin say that they have because of him. So I don't think it's fair for them to hear all this negative talk about these knives after they spent a lot of money for them, because of him. And let's be honest here, these knives ain't cheap, even though they are beautiful and very well built. I have even read, that some have saved a long time to buy just one because of him. So I was just thinking of those people who have saved or are saving for one of these knives, and could finally afford one, then to buy one, just to hear him say he hates it. Some have even said that they could never afford one, but like his video's and value his opinion. So there's my reasoning for posting on his video's.
@jariperho9 жыл бұрын
flex93312 It all boils down to personal preference which varies through time and usage. Do not buy anything because of someone else, for they are not responsible for your own actions. Reviews and opinions are merely guides, but you make the final decision and accept the risks and consequences. I wonder if your knife was still the best, had virtuovice just kept his criticism to himself?
@flex933129 жыл бұрын
I LOVE my Bark River Bravo 1's and 1.25. He didn't discourage me from buying any more, like I said, I'm going to buy a couple more Bravo 1's, a Bravo 2 and at least one Gunny. I was just tired of his rambling on about the knives, but I'm over it. And I didn't want him to discourage others from buying them.

I fell in love with the shape of my Izula and now I need a bigger knife shaped like it for my main Deer Hunting Knife. I looked at the ESEE 4 knife which is bigger then the Izula but the handle looks like its only good for bushcrafting. I want the Joy of Holding a Bark River Handle :) Iam in Michigan and iam thinking about getting the Fox River but I cant decide what steel I should choose. The 3V can do many deer without needing sharpening but it can chip and the A2 can do less deer and needs more frequent sharpening because the steel will roll. I can re hone my knife with the wicked edge sharpener so its not a problem. But what about the Elmax Steel ? Is it more durable then the 3V ? I wonder if it can butcher many deer and not take damage. Will the Elmax Chip if it contacts bone ?
@virtuovice10 жыл бұрын
I will test ELMAX in the coming season 2 months ahead. Current 3V is not chippy at all but the toughest. They must have changed its heat treat to a bit softer and tougher side to make it the ideal steel. The best deer field dressing knife should be Fox River in 3V. I cannot agree to the no contour long handle of current A2 Fox River. Thanks.

@virtuovice10 жыл бұрын
I suspect its geometry is close to the original Bushcrafter to make its apex angle about 40 degrees. It won't keep its sharpness by stropping. Thanks.

Brao1 LT Rampless in Micarta w/ liners is the best all around knife on a survival/bushcraft side. Bravo1LT Drop Point Hunter in a wood handle is the best one on a hunting side. Ok, I like Bark River knives, I really love their classic designes, but in my country and I visited some net shops in the USA and the prices are not a low. I had about 30 knives from a different companies (but nothing from the BR) and I sold all fixed blade knives and now I'm buying only custom knives. It's cheaper and the best quality and materials. But I always look around BR knives for their nice designs. Have a good day Filip

virtuovice And please could you tell me one the best BR hunting knife and one bushcraft knife and kind of steel? I'm going to buy some from BR and I know you have a big experiences with this company. Thank you sir.
@virtuovice10 жыл бұрын
Filimed17 The best hunting knife is Fox River in 3V. Its contoured handle is super excellent for side holding. ELMAX and A2 has a no contoured handle. The best bushcraft knife is Bravo1 3V LT. The stock of regular A2 and 3V is too thick and the angle of the knife to the wood needs to be very large to whittle wood. This angle is the smaller the better to make feathersticks. This difference is very large. Thanks.

Hi Virtuo, I've looked at a bunch of you videos now, but am still a little confused. I hunt mostly Fallow deer, the does are maybe 50kg, and the stags are maybe up to 90kg. So I'm looking at the BR drop point hunter or the Fox River for field dressing and skinning, with Micarta scales. There seems to be options with the blade geometry from Bark River but i've been to their website and the descriptions are unclear. What model do you recommend in these knives for the preferred blade geometry? Thanks, Gus
@virtuovice9 жыл бұрын
Hello Gus, For that kind of deer Classic Drop Point will do the best. It comes in A2, 3V, or CPM154. I personally don't like the long bolster and don't know about the steel property of CPM154. A2 is softer than 3V and easier to strop up. 3V is expected to be twice as durable as A2, but a bit more difficult to strop up. I personally prefer 3V, but think A2 is more friendly to a person who is not accustomed to convex geometry. Fox River comes in A2, 3V, or Elmax. The A2 version comes in a no contoured handle and I don't like it. The 3V and the Elmax versions comes in a contoured handle. And besides the Elmax version comes in a thinner stock which is expected to make a better slicer. Elmax is a decent steel which holds extremely long. So, for Fox River Elmax will be the best choice in my opinion. Fox River will be nice for Red Deer as well. Thanks.
@osmiumgus80259 жыл бұрын
Thanks Virtuo, I really appreciate your experience and enthusiasm. Gus
@HorizonsleatherBlogspot20129 жыл бұрын
CPM154 is another steel type in the stainless steel category. It has excellent edge retention and is not too difficult to sharpen when compared to 3V steel. It is comparable to S30V steel, but has a little less toughness and not quite as much corrosion resistance as S30V. Generally, 154 steel is a great hunting, general purpose blade metal. The CPM154 is an improvement over 154CM steel, which was popular with knife makers in the 1980's. It is widely used and sits on the higher end of the knife steel category. It can take a polish very nicely, which makes for very lovely show pieces, but can be used hard practically as well. It has more toughness and better edge retention than 440C steel. I personally find this steel to be my favorite when considering cost, value, performance and overall wide range of use. You can find out more on our forum, too. www.survivalmonkey.com/threads/steel-and-knives-a-comparison-and-explanation.48948/
@osmiumgus80259 жыл бұрын
I picked up a BR classic drop point hunter in 154CM. It has a convex edge profile from the factory and it feels really good in my hand. Really good. I commonly use butchers boning knives and would normally go with a more substantial handle but I cannot fault this. It is so well balanced and no matter how I hold the knife it is comfortable. Aside from how it handles and performs, it is a work of art. Just beautiful. Thanks for the recommendation Virtuo. I love it. It is late summer now and I have dressed 2 deer and a bunch of rabbits and could not be happier. The info I have for 154CM (from knifecentre): 154CM is a very high carbon stainless steel with the addition of Molybdenum. Because 154CM provides better edge retention than standard cutlery (stainless) steels, it is a good choice for blades that require heavier cutting applications. - Very good edge holding ability - Rockwell Rc 60-61 - Good toughness when double tempered - Fair corrosion resistance - Less expensive than BG-42 and S30V Carbon 1.05 Silicon 0.35 Chromium 13.50 - 14.00 Molybdenum 4.0
