IF YOU CAN FIND THE ACTPOINT OF DRIP, cut a length of bailer twine, jute or any sturdy string. Drive a little nail at the point of drip. Tie the string to it, tie the other end of the string off out of the way and out of the reach of curious critters. The drip will follow the string, diverting it away to a less bothersome spot.

We were having the same issue, here in southern MO, after putting up a new barn at our new stead. What helped for us is gutters, downspouts & attached the blue heavy duty discharge hose to downspouts and about 2" of limestone gravel with turkey grit .....lots of turkey grit. We tried the gravel in run-in stalls & kidding stalls but that didn't work well for cleaning out stalls.....and gravel was flung at us during kidding pawing......lol.....but that worked great for milking & 'people' area. Yep one big run-on sentence but that's how my brain works lol. We're now going to work on a French Drain for the two walls of the run-in/kidding stalls. CONGRATS on Tori! Can't wait to see her Littles.

Thanks for the reminder- I will take my freezing winters over wet winters, that is so tough on the animals and a lot of work for you! Your plan to build up the ground is great, here we trench to divert the snow melt away from key areas so like you mentioned with the French drains along with building up the barn areas bit by bit you’ll see improvement!

We had a dog that was terrified of thunder. Years of trying to comfort her just never made it better. So we decided to get happy excited and give treats during thunderstorms. Like "YAY! That's so fun! Let's have treats! Oh boy! Yippee!" I know it seems kind of silly, but it really helped her to transition away from a fear reaction.

The best but also most complex solution is to do some grading. If the land tilts so the water drains away then you can at least control where the water goes. It's just not an easy fix and could be costly and/or time consuming depending on the equipment used. For the structures like the barn already in place you may have to dig around them to make the land lower. I'm sure there is lots of engineering involved but it's about the only sure way to keep water away.
@SageandStoneHomestead8 сағат бұрын
Digging lower would create a moat which is why we elect to build up the barn floor. It worked well in the main barn :)
@aloras4053 сағат бұрын
This is what I suggest. Fixing the grading is more of a permanent fix and needs done. The drainage going through the barn is really bad.
@SageandStoneHomestead2 сағат бұрын
I guess I can't justify the cost of it when raising the floor has worked in the past. We also have things like underground propane, electric, water lines, septic and leech fields in the area to consider too.
@SageandStoneHomestead2 сағат бұрын
Also our land is flat-flat. The water trickles to the south but there's probably only a foot or 2 drop from one end to the other. The grading would have to be done all the way to the pond to not backwash essentially.

Id say, for the poor puppy, that you be wildly silly and goofy when the shots go off! Lots of treats lots of praise, turn it into a really good thing!
@mistycherie22 сағат бұрын
Those pine pellets do some serious work, Heather! Working through how to fix the drainage sounds like quite a project that will take some time. At least you know what you're dealing with having lived there a little while now. Be careful walking until it's all packed in! Poor Buster, he's such a good boy. You'd think with all the military exercises going on all the time he'd eventually become less sensitive to it but I guess there is a different sound to the ones super close that scares him. Super excited for all the babies, they're so close! 💚💚
@SageandStoneHomestead22 сағат бұрын
The military booms don't bother him at all! It's when someone gets to doing target practice or hunting that he gets the shakes and wants to be inside. Poor dude!

As much rain as you had fall, your barn did really well! We are still dealing with standing water which is rarely an issue for us. I did have a spot in my driveway that would create a problem mainly during the winter months. I had gravel delivered that is I think called #2. The rocks are a mix of at least golf ball size and a tad larger stones. Laying that down really helped make a goog base. Not sure if anything like that is a possibility for you but I just wanted to share. Poor Buster! One of my dogs is very much anxious like Buster. Is he nervous of thunder too? Thanks so much for a great video. Enjoy the warm temperatures and let's hope the storms mid-week are not severe! Stay safe!🙏❤🇺🇸

IDK if they make thunder shirts big enough for LGD but i heard they work decently well with sound fear stuff. doubt he would like the happy hoodies which go on the head an help cover the ears to protect from sound most great pyrn's dont tend to like them. all the girls are lookin great!

I had a Thundershirt for my 10 month old dog who was legit already 66 pounds, but it was sized for a 90-100 pound adultif I remember correctly. TBF, it was over a decade ago, but I believe there were sizes to fit Great Danes and Saint Bernards.

If you use 1.5 to 2 inch rock and use a gas powered tamper to pack it down, it will drain and you will never have to pack it again as long as you don't drive on it. I have used this method several times and it has always worked for me.

We use homeopathy for every animal on our homestead. Our dog has been nervous or reactive from loud noises and we give him homeopathic Phosphorus for this because it has the rubric of "fear of thunderstorms" which is similar to gunshots/pounding/sudden noises. I put the pellets in his water for a couple days and he was a different dog. Already the issue is 90% better and I will assess from here if he needs more. The Bach Flower Blend called "Rescue Remedy" is a gentle blend that can be given to all people and animals on stressful days. Our rabbits, goats, dog have all gotten it. Could be great to give him on the days there is a lot of target practice. Just some ideas-I'm nearly licensed in homeopathy and am always amazed at how well animals respond to energy medicine! I'm so thankful for your content--I'm going to join your community because my goats are due (first freshen) at the end of Feb and I want to learn as much from you as I can before then! ❤

We got that rain right after you. We got a TON. But at least it helped to thaw out the water line to my main trough. My GP was nervous about thunder when I got her. I couldn't have her in the house every time there was a thunderstorm (I have a very small house). I just never made a big deal about it. There was always shelter available for her, but I tried to keep her in with the goats when I knew weather was coming in. She got comfort from the goats. I never gave her attention when there was a storm, that would be like giving her a reward for being nervous. I know it's our instinct to comfort when fear is involved, but dogs aren't the same as we humans. My GP still shows signs that she doesn't like thunder, but she is not nearly as bad as she used to be.

We got a lot of water from that storm as well. Sadly I am not allowed to go outside and explore the barn our critters are in as I am just recovering from spinal durgery and the doc don't want me walking around the yard on uneven surfaces yet.

My land is high and dry for the most part. Last summer we got nearly 3 feet of rain over a 6 week period, then a few hurricanes. Several times I had 6” of water flowing thru my barn. I ended up adding a crude but functional swale system that really helped. I had been planning a new bigger barn, that summer gave me the push I needed. I’m wrapping up the new barn now, it sits up 20” higher than the rest of the ground, and they’re moving in Friday. I’d strongly suggest swales to redirect water. Maybe there is a way you can move the water away from your buildings and out to your pond.

Poor Buster. ❤️ My dogs have never experienced anything negative with shooting, but do not like the sound at all. Even at the sight of our air rifle, they go to their bedding area. My brother’s dog gets super excited when the firearms and fireworks come out. It’s crazy how different they can be.

Wood chips are also a great way to build up barn areas. I called my electric co op for chip drop and have gotten so many loads for free! Poor buster ! Y'all live by a military base and in the country 😅

I use pet friendly cbd oil on my nervous dog during storms and it calms him down. I rub it on his ears as he is a small dog and it does into the fur and into the veins in his ears. Not sure what disease would be used for a live stock guardian but might be worth looking into.

My goodness how beautifully Tori's udder is filling! I was thinking she'd only have one kid for her first freshen, but that udder says "twins" to me. (Or one buckling!) When I saw the state of the newest area during the rain, it reminded me of quicksand! I do think something like a French drain system with added multi-size gravel on top would serve well for the wet season (in combination with the pelleted pine bedding).
@SageandStoneHomestead21 сағат бұрын
Yes her udder is making me think twins or a buckling too!! We shall see (hopefully soon)!

Have you considered installing french drains and/or a couple of culverts to direct the water away from your buildings and animals? I have seen it on other channels, and you could do it yourself - especially since you have a tractor. Not a criticism. Just a thought.

Poor Buster! One of my dogs gets scared like that and I have no idea how to help her. She’s small enough to get on our lap and she shakes like crazy. If we’re outside and she hears any kind of pop she comes running to stand at our feet and whines.
