Hi Tshego, thanks for the upload. I am due for a relaxer and I did enquire with the salon you mention. I am told that the fee is R883 plus a R220 for a cut? I have a pixie. Is this correct? I was stunned I must say.

@@dm6547 I would say they’re a necessary expense and I’m happy to pay a price I think is fair and transparent and aligned with my perceived value of the service I am receiving. R883 is their new price for a relaxer but there are a lot of conditions with this price which is something I don’t like and I was charged R80 then R100 to trim ends which is something that was only disclosed at the payment stage of the process. Initially the relaxer prices increased to around R700 in March then there was a weird increase a few weeks ago and I’m not sure now who this increase applies to and who is still on their old pricing because it wasn’t a widely communicated increase.

Just wanted to share what I learned from a hair stylist duo that I love! ONLY water is a moisturizer. It’s literally moisture. Creams and oils are labeled as moisturizing, but they are actually conditioners. They make your hair softer but only for a short while. They recommend rinsing your hair with water for a few minutes before washing and drinking enough water for your body❤

I moisturize and seal my relaxed hair every other day and it is growing beautifully. If I didn’t moisturize my hair would snap off and break. The not moisturizing is unorthodox but if it works for you then go with it. But if it doesn’t and your hair is breaking then moisturize it, do what works for YOUR hair.
@KaizenTshego

If your hair is integrally weak/ damaged, no amount of moisture/ sealing will help. Moisturising and sealing hair does not make it stronger… I think that’s a psychological thing. If you think about hair in general, irrespective of race, all of our hair is made up of the same compounds. Why is it that non- black people do not moisturise and seal everyday yet their hair grows?

Folks, do what works for you! My hair started thriving and growing after I started lightly moisturizing and sealing more often. I only do so every few days or so, when it feels dry. I also wash 1 to 2 times per week to keep my scalp clean and freshened, which aids in hair growth. I deep condition weekly with a high quality deep moisturizing mask.

Yes, low manipulation is KEY for relaxed hair! I try to wear the same style two days in a row. And, a wash/deep condition once a week. (I also use all products from the same brand: Tresemme. And an As I Am Moisturizer.) - That said, her theory definitely makes sense! If you’re washing your hair at least once a week, you should find that you are naturally giving your hair the moisture it needs. Mine isn’t quite as long as hers, but hopefully soon! 🥰

So happy to see more people talking about NOT moisturising and sealing. My unpopular opinion is that most people who say their hair “thrives” with daily water-based moisturising are experiencing a placebo effect. Our hair has probably absorbed all the ‘moisture’ it can on wash day, and if your ends are already feeling ‘dry’ that same day or the day after, then something needs to change with your wash day products/techniques. Either that or your ends need a trim. At most I think a light serum should be applied to the ends as needed, for lubrication/styling purposes.

Deep conditioning your hair with a good deep conditioner really helps with making hair more manageable and maintaining moisture. Davines has good ones. Light heat protector and a light oil that doesn’t weigh your hair down. If I use the flat iron I only use it the day I wash my hair. Wash once a week too. Some how I get build up from sulphate free shampoo’s. Aloe gel on my scalp also helped me before I would shampoo. And I also realised when I went to the salon my hair grew 😂 Carlton’s wash and blow is under 200. I think I was frying my hair

When I had a perm I would wash my hair once or twice a week. Of course when I am lazy or tired I may not wash my hair for longer. I don’t like any oils, grease on my hair but when I wash my hair I always used deep conditioner one week and instance the other week. The key is not to have your hand in your hair all the time. I would either air dry my hair and wear it that way or if I blow dry or smooth it after I wash it that is the only time I will add heat to my hair until the next wash. The key is less manipulation to your hair as possible, cover it at night with a silk or satin cloth. I perm my hair myself, condition it myself. Because I got tired of going to the hairdressers and they cutting off all my hair. Because they don’t know what the heck they’re doing. learn and know you’re hair because what one person does may work for them, but it may not work for you just saying. I do agree with the young lady with limited heat keep it condition. As for myself I don’t like any oils on my hair because it makes my scalp itchy and hard to wash out and yes, my hair can grow long if I’m not always cutting it off. I believe the secret to your hair growing is not too much manipulation. Keep it healthy trim when is needed and what you’re using on your hair when you find something that works for you use it and when it no longer works for you find something that does. Hope it helps.

I wash my hair every 4 days and now I produce more sebum. So I use my natural oils to moisturize my hair by massaging my scalp and pulling those oils down my hair strands each night. I will use my fingers or my silicone brush (small thin parts and brush or rub from root to ends). My relaxed hair remains strong and soft but not oily; and it’s growing nicely. I couldn’t do this with my natural hair. I always had to add moisture every day (water and oil). Otherwise it became brittle and hard and Break off. Silk pressing it wasn’t any better. I’m happy with my relaxed hair. Only problem is it’s time to redo it and I’m afraid of getting relaxer on the part that is already straight by accident and thus over processing it…

I disagree about moisturising between wash days because your reasoning is that you use something oil based. However, adding oily products can soften hair and make it easier to style. For moisturising water or a water based product would do if a person wants to add hydration in between washes.

Also oil doesn’t moisturize it seals so if ur using it as a moisturizer ur using wrong any way. Water moisturizes and many creams have water. I’m not sure if water based products don’t mix with relaxed hair but that would’ve been a better reasoning

Doesn't it also depend on the type of porosity (high or medium or low porosity) the hair is? "Porosity is a measurement of the hair's ability to absorb and hold moisture. It can also be described as the indicator of how easily moisture can penetrate the hair. Hair porosity is largely determined by genetics, but can also be altered by external factors such as heat and chemical processing." High porosity hair has high moisture absorption rate but low retention rate (can't keep that moisture for long) Then there's medium porosity hair which has normal moisture absorption rate and an easier time retaining that moisture (which is why Tshego's can survive without moisturizer in between those washes). And last is the low porosity hair has trouble absorbing and retaining moisture. Needs extra tender loving care. Once you figure out your hair porosity type... and treat your hair accordingly it will be a game changer. (I think porosity can definitely be altered by chemicals in relaxers in that the porosity you have in natural hair may differ when your hair is relaxed... I know mine differs.😢 I know when I'm natural - my hair has medium 😍 and when relaxed I'm yet to figure it out between high and low porosity cause Wow! I don't recognize that girl😅) That's just my humble opinion guys❤ just like skin types There's no one size fits all. Pay attention to your hair to figure out your porosity type and listen to your hair from there.

If the relaxer starts to burn it means it has been left on too long also relaxer should Not be applied on scalp the roots can be smoothed as the last step of application, also you will need a base product, you can use Vasalin for that. You through in small sections to ensure entire sculp is covered. Lastly work according to the time stated on the relaxer kit and never comb during the process. Hope this makes sense 😅good luck

Wow! Thanks for this video, I always felt like I was commuting a crime for not moisturising and sealing my hair in between wash days! I’ve been relaxed most of my life and have really perfected my hair routine over the past 2 years. I’m just curious if anyone else in a similar position notices that on wash day they tend to loose a lot of hair? I’m not sure whether this is because I literally don’t touch, not even brush my hair through the week as I work from home full time so just have it in a bun? I know statistics say you’re supposed to loose 50-100 hairs a day so could that mean a build up for let’s say 80 hairs across 7 days (560 hair strands) could be the reason for this? I don’t notice breakage regularly but I do notice the shedding and would like to minimise that.

I moved from a hard water city to a VERY hard water city and my hair was breaking and shedding at record speed. I struggled with the effects of hard water before but it was definitely accelerated in the new place. I look at old pictures from before moving and am saddened by how much length and volume I lost. I used to be able to grow my hair to armpit length and beyond no problem but after the move struggling to maintain shoulder length. Anyway my children recently started swim lessons and I bought a swimmers shampoo that removes chlorine and other minerals. I noticed how incredibly soft it made their hair and my daughter's hair was SUPER easy to detangle and she's a 4a with fine strands. Their hair was so soft the next day too. That never happens. So I said let me try this on myself even though I don't swim. Same results for me too! The same product usually never works for all 3 of us. So I'm sitting here thinking it's got to be the minerals. I have a shower filter but not a water softener. Shower filters do not soften water. I've been using my hard water shampoo for every wash and the shedding is MINIMAL now and I wash 1-2 times per week and it stopped my breakage dead in its tracks. I don't have all of those little end pieces everywhere. My hair reacts to my conditioners and leave ins better. Deep conditioners that I thought were just ok are now amazing! My strands are STRONG now. When I try to break a strand of shed hair it takes some actual effort whereas before I could snap it no problem. This was with me doing protein treatments, bond builders, and henna (not all at once😅) and hair was still snapping. I now use Malibu C hard water shampoo every wash and the deeper treatment packet every month or so. They also make a treatment packet for relaxed hair to remove mineral build up. Especially good if you use no-lye relaxers. Ion makes a cheaper hard water shampoo and treatment packs that are sold at Sally's. A lot of people like it but ive never tried it. The one I first tried and still use for my children is called Babo Botanicals Swim and Sport. I try to use the ones labeled for daily use because they are more gentle. Anyway all that to say it could be mineral build up on your scalp causing excess shedding. Hard water is not discussed enough in the hair community and it causes so many problems. Even stylists don't talk about it much. I heard that salons are usually hooked up to water softeners which is why we usually get super silky, easy to detangle hair while at the salon but a different story when we get home. Don't know how true it is. Hope this solves your problem and helps anyone else who comes across this.

Yes, the shedding on wash day is completely normal and you already identified the reason for it! On weeks where I wear curls or styles that I don't want to touch too much, I have a lot of shedding on wash day, since all the 50-100 hairs that didn't get brushed out during the week now all come out at once. On weeks where I brush my hair everyday, however, I notice only a few strands. I don't think there is anything you can do to prevent the natural process of shedding, but I agree with the other suggestion of investing in a water filter and hard water shampoo!

I'm gonna try the method of not moisturizing my hair everyday. I'm not sure if it's the reason my hair is a big weighed down and stiff? I'll come back. :)

Could be that and mineral build up if you have hard water. Try a chelating shampoo. If hard water is your problem that shampoo will transform your hair! Happened to me. All my life I thought my hair was naturally dry as tumbleweeds and it was mineral build up. I stripped it off and my 4b hair is super soft, detangles easily, and STRONG! The minerals were like a helmet on my head hiding my true texture.

If your comb or brush is always dirty and oily for over Moisturizing then know that you doing to much.. With my light fine texture relaxed hair , my hair can only have the Dominican blowout bouncy wavy look , only WHEN I DON'T MOISTURIZE MY HAIR so my hair strands are not choked with oils or creams. Twice a week i only OIL MY SCALP with rosemary fungreek home made oils o makr myself but i focus on scalp never hair strands. My hair sways like a wig only if i do this method of not choking my hair strands with creams or oils.. LET YOUR HAIR STRANDS BREATH, ABSOLUTELY NO MOISTURIZER ON EARTH WILL GICE YOU MAJICAL GROWTH, ITS ALL A MYTH I only Moisturize on wash days using dime sized oRS glossy Oil, just a dime size. . KZbinr Niara Alexis taught me all I know. Her shoulder legth bouncy hair texture is my hair goals,

I don't know why folks are moisturizing everyday, meaning they are using WATER BASED products and healthy hair is naturally HYDROPHOBIC or water repelling. You are actually doing more damage. Hair doesn't want to be wet like that. Water is just a means to get it clean and not a necessity for the hair's health like everyone thinks it is. Girl, I'm like you, I don't moisturize between washes either. I wash 1-2 times a week. Folks are better off turning their attention to preventing mineral build up from hard water. This is why many people's hair feels dry, crunchy, and brittle. It's the water we're washing with. Shower filters do not soften water. Hard water is no joke!

How can I protect my daughter's hair from swimming pool water?
@KaizenTshego
@KaizenTshego Жыл бұрын
Although swimming caps don’t keep water out 100% I think that they’re super useful. Deep conditioning before and after the swim days can help prevent dry and brittle hair. I also find that rinsing the hair out thoroughly after swimming gets the chlorine out of the hair as much as possible which helps in the meantime before you can get it washed. If she swims often (more than twice a week) protective styling her hair might be a better long term solution for her because washing every day is not practical sometimes (this is if protective styling applies to her hair type)

@@bgonya06Please also get a gentle swimmers shampoo to make sure you are getting the chlorine out. There's also a products called DChlorin8. It's a leave in conditioner spray that gets the chlorine out if you prefer not to go the shampoo route. My kids swim weekly and I've been able to keep their hair nice and healthy doing this.

I actually do not think this is bad advice at all. I personally will say I know A LOT of relaxed girls who do the whole moisturizing and sealing with oil every night and sometimes every day thing. I was one of them! And you just don’t really see a significant growth throughout the years in my opinion with this method for most people. Something I would add though that I feel very few relaxed girlies in this space bring up is the products you use make a world of a difference. **If you are relaxed you shouldn’t use products for people with natural hair!! ** Your hair is completely different and lets be honest damaged (in the same way someone with bleached hair has damaged hair or when you straighten your hair you are damaging it). Damaged hair needs different products than non damaged hair as the hair reacts to the ingredients differently. I would say to start with SILICONES. I know a lot of people are against them, say they leave build up (which most shampoos can remove) but with damaged hair you want stuff that will stay in your hair!! There are even special silicones that bond ONLY to the parts of your hair that is damaged (bc damaged hair is negatively charged) and on hair that is not damaged literally will wash off with water. What’s great about silicones is that they can be used more sparingly and less frequently bc they DO stay in your hair till your next wash day. So you are not constantly running product through your hair. I would suggest for anyone who wants to give this a try to just start with using shampoos and conditioners that have silicones I specifically love amodimethicone which can be found in the Redkin Bounding conditioner and shampoo. I would also HIGHLY RECOMMEND Paul Mitchell Super Skinny Serum; this is PURE SILICONES AND IT WILL SLAYYY YOUR HAIR. Lastly I think it’s important to also note that you should incorporate some sort of product in your hair care routine that fights frizz or is anti-humidity. For the purpose of extending a style as long as possible to reduce washes or heat styling (because I truly believe less washing is better person). This should be a product that is in your washed a routine, for example a blowup cream or serum with anti humidity properties as well as some sort of leave in product (my favourite is Kenra Anti Humidity Spray which I top with Shaper Plus hair spray to keep my blow out in place)
