Me too, Karen. It's the 4th for me. And, my family is here in town. The problem? My son-in-law's mother hates me, so she moved to town, bought a multi-million $ mansion and moved everyone into it except me. Yes, she did, and at the same time, she managed to get EVERYONE to stop speaking to me, including the grand kids who are in their 20's. I finally found out why! #! I became a republican and #2 I did not have the covid vac. SO, those 2 things caused me to lose my entire family. I would never have done that to her for her choices for anything. She's old enough to be able to make her own decisions and so am I. She doesn't have to explain anything to me and that door swings both ways. Will it change in the future? If I outlive her! I pray and try to think positive, but so far nothing. No birthdays, holidays, nope....nothing including me.

After doing the whole 9 yards for Thanksgiving and Christmas for my entire life (I'm 63) I've decided to step back and let others take over doing the big spread for friends/family. I'm thrilled about it. This year I spent Thanksgiving in my pajamas with just my husband and I. I even got a nap! It was a very peaceful day and I am so thankful for it.

I agree with you! I’m 62 and I’ve been doing Holidays for a long time!! It’s time for others to take over and if they don’t, then my husband and I go to a beautiful hotel where they serve dinner and enjoy ourselves in front of the fireplace😊

Sounds like a wonderful, leisurely thanksgiving. I’m 75, cooked a 20 lb turkey for others, and almost dropped it getting it out of the oven! My sister in law jumped in, we saved it and didn’t get burned BUT I made up my mind I’m stepping out of my expected roles for the holidays. You help me realize that something simpler can actually be better. Just can’t and don’t want to do it anymore. can’t wait for your book! Happy birthday!

Excellent visit. All of my Holiday festivities have changed since my parents passed in 2005 (Mother) and 2007 (Daddy). My Brother started new traditions with his family and my branch of the tribe went our way. My tribe is quite dysfunctional…my husband passed in 2021 and my only child is a brain injury (disabled) and lives with me…so we “celebrate” at home as best as we can. I can really get the Mulligrubs very easily…but I try to fill my world with folks like YOU to lighten the load. Thank you.

Thank you Sandra for saying "stop flagellating yourself" boy that can be me in a nutshell. I've come to realize I operate so much of the time out of guilt, that needs to stop. When I do things for others out of guilt I become angry with myself, not at them but at myself because I feel like I'm being used. But the root of the problem is with me not them. Life is such a wonderful learning experience, thanks for sharing your wisdom.

Sandra, your Thanksgiving sounds fabulous! Maybe because I had traditional, lovely holidays growing up, I was ok with experiencing non- traditional holidays as an adult. One of my earliest ones was with my brother and a few friends. We were living in San Francisco and headed out for Chinatown for what turned out to be a fantastic feast. We sat at a big round table, warmed up with hot tea, ate, talked, laughed. We had the best time. We had walked to and from which was quite a distance. But we sang and laughed all the way! This made me realize you can have the spirit of the season no matter how you choose to spend it. So every holiday I ask myself what shall it be this year. I love that you made such a sweet memory with your daughter and grandson. It's something you three will remember always. And isn't that what it's all about? I'm grateful for wonderful, generous you, Sandra! Thank you for always sharing your thoughts, wisdom and heart. 💞🫶🥰
