Wow...that copy of Farewell to Arms just brought back some memories. My mom had that edition (probably from when she was in high school), and I read it senior year of high school (1991), and wrote my senior English paper on it. She donated most of my books to the library when they moved. Thanks for sharing that!

True History of the Kelly Gang won the Booker prize. That's quite the deal you found and a beautiful hardcover edition. The Plot Against America is excellent and couldn't be more topical. It's Roth really going for it. The HBO limited series is also superb.

I haven't yet got to Rules of Civility, but the Towles book that I love so much is The Gentleman of Moscow. I'm sort of afraid that nothing else will stand up to that one. I adored Everything I Never Told you by Ng; to me it hit right in the "parenting feels." I felt like I had to call my grown son and apologize for everything I've ever done. Great book, though. My favorite Fannie Flagg book is Welcome to the World Baby Girl; Daisy Fay is really good, just not my favorite. You really can't go wrong with Fannie Flagg. Sebastian Barry is such a great writer -- if you like him, pick up The Secret Scripture. Great Haul!

I keep meaning to get to Laird Hunt! I got a couple of his books from Coffeehouse Press within the last year, since I'd subscribed to their full season, but shamefully still haven't read them. I think one of them had loose connection to Zorrie as well, but not sure. You did great blazing through, but still giving us a good quick rational for your mountain of new books, what a steal you got too.

If you enjoy the John McGahern book (or even if you don’t!) I’d really recommend his memoir. Utterly magical book that feels like fiction because of the big personalities of his family, and the dreamy and tough background of rural Ireland in the 1930/40s. I hadn’t read any of his work prior but couldn’t get enough of it afterwards! Some other Irish books I love are The Poor Mouth by Flann O’Brien, Angela’s Ashes by Frank McCourt, Breakfast on Pluto by Patrick McCabe and Did Ye Hear Mammy Died by Seamus O’Reily 🍀

"True History of the Kelly Gang" is my favourite Peter Carey book so far, it is really good. "The Leopard" is excellent but may require a little background reading into the Risorgimento in Italian history. It was made into a sumptuous, classic film starring Burt Lancaster, Alain Delon and Claudia Cardinale by gay filmmaker Luchino Visconti, so would make an ideal book/movie tie in.
@SupposedlyFun Жыл бұрын
I had no idea there was a film version--thanks! I was a bit worried about whether or not I would need background knowledge, but it will be a fun project regardless at some point.

Thanks again Greg! The Leopard is a great one-beautifully written story of an Italian aristocrat figuring out how to deal with the political & social disruptions the country is going through that will mean serious changes for his social class. Lucchino Visconti’s movie of the book is a visual masterpiece though Burt Lancaster’s casting as the main character has never made sense to me. The story of the author, de Lampedusa, is very interesting as well (his novel’s main character is based on an ancestor of his). I hope you enjoy it!!

Burt Lancaster was also very miscast in The Rose Tattoo, so I guess it was just a thing back then. 😂

I'm early on in the Donna Leon series. They are good, but sometimes a little twilight zone-y because of their age. The first book was written in the 90's and it doesn't feel that old at all...except one of the characters is a not terribly elderly man who was a Nazi as a young adult. I spent half the book reminding myself not to do math and just accept that the book was 30 years old. I don't think you need to read the books in order, but I would start with the first so that you know who the series characters are. I will also say that I DNF'd the 4th book (Death in a Strange Country...I can't remember if that is one you picked up) because a lot of the language around the LGBTQ community did not age well and I just couldn't get past that (it was probably acceptable in the 90s, but not now). However, I had no problem picking the series up again with the next book.

Oof. I had to stop watching 90s-era British mysteries because of the handling of gay characters, so that's good to know. Thanks.

I'd like to recommend a wonderful Irish author you should read before your trip to Ireland, John Banville. He won the Man Booker Prize in 2005 for The Sea, but my favorite novel of his is Ancient Light, published in 2012. Best opening catch to a novel I've ever read. 'Billy Gray was my best friend and I fell in love with his mother...I was fifteen and Mrs. Gray was thirty-five. I love John Banville.
