Better Mental Health with Natural Remedies

4 жыл бұрын

I've lived with bipolar disorder and mental illness since I was 13, it nearly killed me many times. Now I am completely well this is the story of how I learned to take control of the imbalance in my brain and recover my mental health.
Initially, I would just boost my neurotransmitters to overcome depressions but this would make me manic/hypomanic and then crash and burn back down into a depression.
Eventually, I learned to treat the manias and then how to balance both sides, how to lift the low neurotransmitters causing depression and at the same time keeping a lid on the mania preventing the neurotransmitters going to high.

Amazing man,we are all so proud of you,you pulled through when it could have been so easy to just give up. Please continue your work, the world needs more natural healing. Only last week I had a severe asthma attack combined with a extremely sore throat which made me choke when I coughed up pglegm,this induced an anxiety attack but only for the 2-3minutes of the coughing. When my doctor "examined" me he immediately said oh you have anxiety? here is some Xanex. I refused the xanex and after 3 days my throat healed enough so that I could cough normally without choking. it is unbelievable how doctors are so quick to push the benzo's at patients rather than looking at the real problem. If my doctor had even looked at my throat he would have seen it was very inflamed and prescribed maybe steroids to reduce the swelling. No, I could have been put in a life of addiction and pain because of ignorance.

Thanks for your talk. It is nice to see that some with bipolar are managing it and having a decent life. I also have managed my bipolar for many decades. The meds they used on me like Thorazine caused me to gain a ton of weight and at times made me feel like a zombie. Although I was in full blown mania at the start, for the rest of my life I just had brief periods of hypomania, but long periods of low grade depression. I learned to accept and deal with the depression with exercise, cognitive therapy, and writing a daily gratitude list. I'm very disciplined about a regular sleep schedule. Even if I do not sleep, I do not get up and move around. Lying in the dark, I probably get some short bits of sleep, but the lack of stimulation rests my brain. I want to get up and get on the computer, but I do not do it.

Glad you found it helpful. I’m preparing my next vid on the neurobiology of biology and self help techniques we can use to improve our outcomes. I’ll discuss the importance of neuroplasticity in this vid. The chapter on how to boost neuroplasticity will be ready later in the year. Im so glad to hear a psychiatrist finds my work helpful, my next series of vids will cover the neurobiology of bipolar disorder that we can leverage and improve for ourselves; I think this should be of interest to you. I’m hopeful that over the course of the next decade we will see major improvements in the treatment of mental health conditions.

Thank you for saying that. A few years ago I started to follow the practice of ‘radical-honesty’, it feels clean and easier to live with, there’s even a wiki how page on how to do it! www.wikihow.com/Practice-Radical-Honesty One consent in radical-honesty is when you lie you give away your power because you cannot stand in your own truth in front of the other person, you have to hide your truth from them. When I’m late I don’t tel the lie sorry I’m late the traffic was awful, I say sorry I’m late I’m such at being punctual, because that’s the truth. If someone says are you a free with me I don’t say no I’m not angry I just feel disappointed, instead I admit I do feel angry. The important thing to remember with radical-honesty is it begins with being honest with yourself, admitting how you feel and your own bad behaviours; it is not a license to tell people how annoying they are but begins by admitting what button/trigger is in me that they push.

Just found your channel. It’s amazing, it’s like you’re reading from my life’s story. I have a question though, do you have a list of the supplements you took to finally fix you and what each one does? Amazingly I’ve noticed even the more random things you are mentioning like a difficultly hearing and difficulty remembering things. But only in my low phase. When normal or hypomanic I am super sharp and quick on the uptake and it’s so strange to see how drastically this all affects me. Very happy to have found this channel. I wish you the best of luck in your endeavors and hope you can help those of us suffering.

Thank you for sharing your story and all the information that you share on your channel. I definitely related to a lot of your story. I have severe bipolar 1 with psychotic features, and have been searching for holistic solutions for maintaining control and balance for years now, and have found success but also have had lots of backsliding and multiple hospitalizations as well. I started taking lithium carbonate earlier this year (I'm at 300mg a day, but definitely considering lithium orotate as an alternative) and this in combination with a supplement (True Hope Empower Plus) and regular cardio exercise has got me in a pretty stable place, but there's definitely room for improvement!

I am overcome with tears of relief and also fear as I am beginning to recognize and accept that I most likely have bipolar disorder. I am 33 and currently quite debilitated by another major depression episode, after having experienced what I am now realizing was a manic episode lasting for months. This is about the 3rd or 4th cycle that I am able to identify throughout my life, which has been spent mostly in low-grade to severe depression. Like you, I was suicidal by age 13. Absolutely heartbreaking to admit. Trauma. I am hopeful to begin this journey towards healing, though I know this is just the beginning. Thank you so much for sharing your story, you are truly an inspiration for me right now. I’m looking forward to watching the follow up video on your neuroplasticity protocol. Thank you again so much - may we all find the willingness and resources towards recovery and living a life of happiness

Well done on recognising the manic phases, this is a really important discovery. People can have unrecognised BP for years, only seeing the depression episodes. To stop the depressions you have to stop the manias in the first place. Manias rev up and exhaust the brain, the manias follow the depressions. Also on order to treat the depressions without precipitating another cycle you have to be able to manage/prevent mania.

Your story is very similar to mine. I came here to the US as a kid. I always battle with phobias and later on panic attacks and some bouts of depression but never really thought something was wrong me with. I just thought that’s how life was. Later when I hit 30 I went in to my second bout of mental decline. I have never been to a doctor because of money and plus because I was not from this country so I’ve always had to just manage my self. This last episode I went through really took it out on me. I don’t even know how I made it through. All I could do was just pray. This is when I came to a realization that definitely I had some type of mental problem. I just never saw it. And I’ve always wondered why my brothers and sister never had the problems I did. Ever since then I have always battle with my emotions and thoughts trying to find a solution. It’s been now three years and I Can manage it somewhat but I still get bouts of depression and sometimes lots of anxiety. But I did notice how I can get very manic. Like I suddenly get bouts of energy and motivation but than I remember that it’s a trap. Setting me up for a low. So I try to just chill out and not get to motivated.

I also used 5HTP, b complex and GABA.. Pretty much full time. Others too, but this was the main ones....I am so into getting better control over this and possibly seeing my son get off of these prescription drugs. What about extreme psychosis in mania? He is on an antipsychotic, risperdone, his psychiatric nurse hopes to raise his lithium enough to stop that one... He's only been on this stuff for 2 months... 😎 Thanks for this!!!!

I think you’ll find my next series of videos on the biology and self help treatment options of bipolar disorder useful. The first one will be an overview of a dozen biological manifestations of bipolar and what we can do to help ourselves control them and hence the condition. It should be ready in about 6 weeks. I’m always delighted to hear where psychiatrists and doctors take an interest in my work. If there’s any possibility of collaboration or presenting my work I would love to do that. The current treatment options are so very limited and often problematic. Although there are several exiting new treatment methods being investigated progress is painfully slow. Anyway thanks for your comment.

Hiya mate,my mum was diagnosed properly in 2008,we went into care etc. Shes been medicated with injections since then. What is your daily schedule like? Do you exercise,im guessing you eat right. Shes always smoked cannabis,however within the last 7 years since she been on other drugs on and off. She went from 13stone to 7 stone,she has bipolar 1. Shes 43 now and i just want to help her change and watch her become better with how she speaks thinks,what she does throughout the day . Im interested in your studies etc as youve tried quite spiritual things. This is an interesting video,it goes to show how powerful the brain/subconscious can be,it is possible to rewire howrver its so complex and very diffcult. Im just want to help my mum ,im 20 and its very hard in a messy environment etc. I get her traits etc as im the one who shown her a video about her mental health which help her learnt more about it than ever. I resonate with alot of whay you say within this video,you seem to be into and want to study alot of what im intrigued in. I hope your well.

There are many serotonin boosting supplements, there’s supplements that increase the production of serotonin and others that stimulate regrowth and regeneration of the serotonin pathways in the brain. BUT before you boost serotonin synthesis with any supplements you must eliminate chronically elevated cytokines/inflammation because cytokines/inflammation directs serotonin metabolism away from serotonin towards the production of neuro-toxic quinolinic acid. If you take serotonergic supplements when you still have elevated cytokine/inflammation they may produce the opposite paradoxical effects and make things worse. So first eliminate inflammation coming from:- Over activation of the HPA axis, which may be genetically inbuilt in your system or from chronic stress, An imbalanced diet, (omega 3:6 balance, inadequate pollyphenols/flavonoids, poor blood sugar/insulin control), Poor gut microbiome, and/or gut infections SIBO, Leaky gut, Allergy disorder, High BMI (weight), Deficiencies: D3, magnesium et.al., Smoking, Dental, gum disease, Inadequate sleep, Current and even historical infections like Lyme, Epstein bar, streptococcus, ear infections, chest infections, sinus i infections… Clean up ALL the above issues (this could take from weeks to months) then your serotonin metabolism will function in a non-depressive way and serotonergic supplements can work the way you want them to.

Peter: can you share your opinion on moderate alcohol use with Lithium orotate. I like a glass of wine or cocktail few times weekly. What are your thoughts while taking lithium orotate?
@NaturalMentalHealthTreatments
@NaturalMentalHealthTreatments 2 жыл бұрын
In terms of interaction with the lithium orotate alcohol is fine, no special concerns. Dehydration is to be avoided even on low doses lithium orotate, so consume some hydrating fluids with your wine. I used to drink a 1/4 bottle of wine a day and by bipolar was stable, at moderate doses alcohol does little harm and deliverer stress and pleasure benefits. There’s a little evidence that even moderate alcohol consumption may reduce brain volume, and I did used to wonder if a very vulnerable brain such as my own should continue to drink. I gave up drinking alcohol entirely because as I continued to balance my brain reached a point where I simply stopped enjoying or getting any benefits from it; I interpret this as a good sigh but to be honest I miss the pleasure and relaxation it used to deliver.

I used to have anxiety/panic disorder with public speaking, it's only in the last couple of years that I've completely overcome this. I used a combination of exposure therapy (repeatedly exposing myself to the very thing I was afraid of) and I believe intensive meditation also changed the anxious wiring in my brain. Now that I'm free from this opens up new possibilities and I am planning to do some public speaking on's mental health recovery. Thanks for the encouragement

I am doing research on if bipolar can be cured do you believe you are in remission or cured? If you got better and never remitted again would you believe you were cured or would you think you did not actually have bipolar? Thank you.
@NaturalMentalHealthTreatments
@NaturalMentalHealthTreatments 2 жыл бұрын
Great question. I still have bipolar disorder, there is no treatment that permanently cures bipolar, however I am able to keep it completely under control with ongoing treatment (in my case using natural self-help supplements and lifestyle medicine techniques) for over a decade now and I have the rapid cycling feature. You could call this remission, but that term feels to passive and random for my liking, I prefer to say I keep it under control with effective treatment. People that believe self-help supplements and lifestyle medicine techniques either don’t work or are to weak to control a serious mental health disorder dismiss what I say I’ve achieved as either you are just in spontaneous remission, enjoy it while it lasts and then take some real medication, or your supplements are producing a powerful placebo effect. I guess you could say I’ve worked out how to keep my bipolar in remission if you want to use that word. When I finally recognised hypomania and embraced I have bipolar disorder, that it is a brain condition and no amount of psychotherapy would stop my recurrent depressions I set about taking control of my neurotransmitters, adjusting them jump or down according to the hypomania/depressed phase my condition was in. I had about 5 good years doing that. Initially my treatments were clunky and jerky, but with in a year got to the point where I could ‘see’ the early warning signs of condition coming several days in advance and make subtle adjustments. For the first time I felt I control of my condition not the other way around, I enjoyed those years and look back on them fondly; looking back fondly on a pieriond of my life was a new experience. Almost 12 years ago I went beyond controlling my neurotransmitters and switched to a new treatment strategy which was to target all the other imbalances identified as features of bipolar disorder: neuro-inflammation, neuroplasticity, stress-responses (HPA disregulation), circadian rhythm dysregulation, sleep physiology, oxidative-stress, mitochondrial disfunction, gut microbiome and more. The results have been nothing short of spectacular. After 5 years on this new treatment combination I hadn’t seen the (hypomania/depression) return and require adjustment. Previously my rapid cycling hypomania/depression would attempt to hijack my brain 6 times a year so after 5 years I so I should have seen 30 attempted returns and there had been zero! This made me ask myself the question what have I done, have I actually cured my bipolar?! I proceeded to test this hypothesis be discontinuing all my supplements, the result was within a week I observed my brain speeding up, rapid speech, diminished need for sleep and interest in hedonistic pleasures, if left untreated this would have been quickly followed by a phase of bipolar depression. So know for sure I still have bipolar but I’m able to keep it under control. In the past 11+ years that (experiment) was the only time I saw the condition return, this is the first decade in the last 50 years that depression didn’t try to kill me. Now I love my life, something I never thought I would say, I still haven’t gotten used to waking up and starting another day well and free from mental illness. There is now irrefutable evidence that bipolar disorder is highly genetic and we do not yet have the ability to edit and change our DNA genetic code. There is an emerging understanding that we can influence whether specific DNA genes are expressed or not. There are proteins that sit atop the DNA genes called epigenetic proteins and when the epigenetic proteins are tightly bound it increases the expression of the genes, conversely when they are loosely bound the genes are more expressed. The classic example of this is if you carry the gene mutation for breast cancer you can inhibit it by tightly binding epigenetic proteins sitting on top of the cancer-causing genes by eating lots of Broccoli and similar vegetables and the extracts. So far there’s been very little practical research in how to use this for mental health problems, there is a little understanding that some nutrients may influence the epigenetic proteins that influence how long serotonin persists in the synapses, but that’s about it. And when it comes to bipolar disorder it’s looking like there may be hundreds of genes involved in encoding for the condition so developing either gene editing (CRISPR) technology or epigenetic gene suppression or stabilisation techniques is so far beyond our current capabilities it’s science fiction.
