A blind lady and her guide dog were regulars at a cafe where I worked. One time they came in, and she stood in the door and asked, "Where am I?" When we told her, she laughed. Said it had been a long day and her dog was tired, so brought her into the cafe so they could have a break!

My aunt had a dog that was just a lap dog, not trained for anything special but was such a good boy. Well he started doing this weird thing where he would smell her armpit and bark at her. So of course we laughed like he’s telling her she smells bad. Well just by happenstance she had her yearly mammogram a month later, they found a very small lump under that armpit basically in her breast tissue. She got the lump removed and he smelled there a few more times but then quit doing it and he never barked at her again He was telling her “mom something is up w you” he was that smart and we were too stupid to understand! So yeah, dogs are freaking amazing! Rest is pup paradise Opie❤

I presume Mr. Maple is a Golden Retriever. They're exceptionally smart dogs. I kinda was wondering about it after watching, they rank number four in intelligent dog breeds. Mr. Maple knows his job, and does it well. He's such a good boy.

It’s so smart that he hugs the buildings, cuz then you don’t have to worry about running into poles and trees and such. Sure other people have to move and walk around you, but other people can see, so that’s easy for them :)

I trained my own service dog, and it took a lot to get him to continue to follow my lead through doors instead of running in, because they've closed on him before and are generally scary! That said, it would be awful to have an accident because of said training and hinges are definitely something I never thought to consider!

I hate being on a bus and the only seats are beside the door. There's a glass plate kn front of those seats but the gap at the side is usually big enough for a tail to just her slip through unintentionally and get trapped in the shutting door 😭😭😭

Our German Shepherd-Lab mix learned that when he got into a car he should go to the far side and turn around and face the open door to protect his tail. He also learned that when he was on a farm he should not have his tail up when going under an electric fence!😂

I work with a guide dog every day, and it’s always amazing to see the change to “work mode” the moment the harness is on. One moment she’s a silly, sweet, fairly typical Golden Retriever, and the next, she’s serious and focused and all about work.

My Dad was totally blind he never had a guide dog. But one time a dog came to our house ,and Dad let us keep him, until owner is found. Anyway the dog ended up being a guide dog , the very first time my dad was going to walk into something the dog jumped in front of him. She was a great dog. She looked just like your dog maple. The dog was only a few months old when it came to us and it had a kitten in its mouth that was about 4weeks old they would do everything together even when he took Dad for a walk.

My service dogs are multi-purpose, but are trained in guidework as part of their tasks because I disassociate and need it. My dogs are taught the route to safe spaces like a coffee shop and a Walgreens, and know how to get there with very little input in cases where I am not *there* to tell them what to do. They know to only cross if other people are crossing the street, and to wait until they see another person crossing. It's a very important and scary thing to need, but it's probably saved my life. And it's much more work to train than standard guide work. But the base to it is very similar.

My kids and I had the honor of raising a guide dog pup for her first year and we taught her "find a cop" and "find coffee" (as in coffee shop or coffee stand, and we chose that because of the strong scent) - that way if her new person ever got lost, she could find help without them having to wander aimlessly hoping someone would notice. Maple is absolutely adorable and obviously loves his job very much! ❤

A dog could come to learn "find a cop" just by the combination of scents that a standard police person would smell of. Gun powder from their weapon, capsaicin of the pepper spray they carry, the rubbery scent of the latex gloves used for searches, plus all the other various gear they carry. Every police officer is a different person with a unique scent, but they all walk around with the same standard set of items that make a unique combination that the dog can learn to recognize. It's not much different from teaching them to find drugs, bombs, allergens, low blood sugar, etc. A specific scent is given a name to identify it to them, and you give them the command to find that.

Wow, I've always been worried about calling myself blind when I'm legally blind. I joke around a lot with friends when they mention blindness, but I sometimes do that just to remind myself that its not everyones experience to see things like I do. I worry sometimes about going completely blind because I'm only 23 right now and I know my vision will deteriorate as I age, but your sunny disposition makes me feel so much better about it.

It was so cool to see Maple correct himself at the crosswalk where he took Paul to the edge. The crosswalk stripes were to your left, so when Maple got into the street, he took himself and Paul over to the stripes. Awesome work, Maple!

I used to raise guide dog puppies. Seeing what they do when fully trained is interesting. My job was to make them comfortable everywhere. Like I’ve taken my brand new pup on the bus the day after getting them. I would carry the little one , mind you, but they were on the bus from day one. I had to teach them where they were allowed to pee, to pee on concrete if there’s no grass around, basic commands, to walk on grates and many other kinds of surfaces without discomfort. I taught some to find the subway, find my keys. I had to teach them not to chase common small creatures like squirrels, raccoons and cats. Stuff like that.

As a volunteer puppy raiser for a large organization on the east coast, this was a pleasure to watch! You can only imagine the trust that blind people have in their dog to not lead them out into traffic or put their life in danger, the confidence and bravery that it must take to go out on your own as a blind person is just staggering. After meeting a blind friend a couple of years ago who prefers to be led by a sighted guide as opposed to using a cane or guide dog, whenever we go out, I think a *lot* more about accessibility + how to describe the terrain we're on in helpful ways. It is astounding to me how talented Maple is at making judgment calls and balancing so many logistical challenges at the same time when he's guiding! Have you all ever made a podcast or video about what it was like for Paul to learn how to work as a part of a guide-dog team? These people don't know or understand dogs. You could never force a dog do this level of work non consensually. Dogs that don't consent, have the drive or ability, don't make the cut. Maple is doing this because he's excellent and gets reinforcement for it too.

Also I'm not very well learned on Maple's breed and if there are any common factors in what they enjoy but a lot of dogs have the kind of "work" they like to do literally built into their genetics; sheepdogs are a great example because even when just kept as pets instead of farmdogs they are CONSTANTLY trying to herd people and animals and for the most part they seem to love it! Anyone who disses Paul for having Maple as a guide dog has clearly never had a dog because it's easy to tell when they're happy or miserable; they aren't like cats always trying to hide their pain lol all the dogs I've met are dramatic af, if they don't like something that's going on they will let you know very vocally (I'm sure there are dogs that don't adhere to this; just my own experience)

First of all, you both are wonderful together! Maple is so smart and lovely. Learning about how the guide dog guides was fascinating. I have always wondered how the guide dogs do their work. I have to give kudos to the person who trained Maple in the first place. Their year or so training that beautiful dog and then to give him back to the organization (I live in Canada so I don’t know what the term is in the States) must have been difficult. When you said that the visually impaired person needs to know where they are, it reminded me of when I’d only had my driving licence for a short time. I was driving somewhere I hadn’t been before, in the days before GPS, and I had a vision-impaired passenger. I was driving down a main road when she told me that I’d missed my turn. Oh, ok, I’ll take the next one. She then told me I needed to go through the next four sets of lights, because right turns weren’t permitted at those lights, but I could turn at the lights after that. It was a long time before I lived down having a blind person as my navigator 😂

Mr Maple is Paul's first guide dog -- and the answer is "yes!" Depending on your lifestyle, location, etc... guide dogs can get all sorts of specific customization. Although the "basics" are all the same. Great question!

What I appreciate about this is how you actually show and explain what Maple is doing, why he's doing it and why you (Paul) are doing what you are doing. I think society is so quick to just dismiss people who want to know how someone lives their life. To explain it and show it, its important. Maple is also adorable. I loved how excited he was at the beginning. Just shows that of course he is still a lovable dog and wants to play and have treats.

Our family has raised 5 Guide Dogs for the Blind. I can tell you that if the dogs are not happy in their work, they never graduate and do not go on to become a Guide. These dogs love doing what they do. It was an extremely rewarding time in our life, teaching the puppies all they needed to know before Guide School....manners, basic obedience , relieving on leash and on command, how to behave in a restaurant, grocery store and my daughter took her dog to high school once a week and he laid at her feet during class. Giving up the dogs at about 18 months was heart crushing. We cried for weeks after each one. Great to see this team working so well together!

Making disabled experiences accessible to able-bodied folks in a friendly way does so much good in this world. I am a tech wearing autoimmune diabetic who wears everything very visible to help normalize diabetes for younger folks. I would want my dog to go around grates! They are one of my biggest fears - that one will be loose and I will fall through the sidewalk!
