Amazing video! The most innovative musicians are underestimated and shorthanded by their labels way too often. I'll always be grateful that MBV ultimately won the battle to get Loveless out to the public. I can't imagine how much incredible music we must have been deprived of simply because the labels weren't ready for it

One of the greatest listening experiences committed to disc. When I heard the album in 1991, I laid on the floor, put on headphones, and had a really difficult time absorbing it. It was so noisy and the vocals were very difficult to make out. But, I was interested. There were things happening that I figured I was missing. Very true. When I got it, I got it good, and it is beautiful. It has passages, moments that emerge, then blend back and emerge again. It creates places to live. It’s not loveless at all

Great description. Couldn’t agree more.

Agreed! A great synopsis of how I felt listening to it when it came out. I found it intoxicating, but a hard record to listen to as well. It was truly more than I could take in, but I couldn’t get enough at the same time. When I saw them live in San Francisco (‘92 I think) it was even more overwhelming. The loudest show I’ve ever attended. When they did their instrumental break of nuclear distortion and cataclysmic reverb, it was mesmerizing, just like Shields often describes the band’s reaction to playing super loud distortion for long stretches at time. The album still stands up as utterly unique and ahead of its time.
@idiotsavant7512 жыл бұрын
@@BeTheGuitar maybe it should be called Timeless. The forms emerge from it in the most extraordinary way. And the suspensions of time in the process of the music’s expression of a kind of secret love are astonishing. The ‘hit’, Soon, though great, may be the least interesting song on the disc. That’s very relative. It would be the best on almost every other album.
@BeTheGuitar2 жыл бұрын
@@idiotsavant751 yeah, it’s in my top 3 albums of all time. Just listened again last night to Colm’s haunting sampled instrumental Touched. So much to unfold on this album. In fact, I still haven’t listened to their follow on “mbv” because I don’t want to be disappointed. I guess I feel a tiny bit of what Kevin felt after making Loveless. Lol.

Quite clearly English is not the narrator's first language. The tonal nuances, and rhythmic delivery that we, as native speakers, take for granted are not so easily learnt. I do not find her voice creepy whatsoever, but maybe there is a certain je nais ce' que which can be regarded as being peculiar... She sounds cute to me!

Bought their records at the time and never ever heard of the term 'shoegaze' - where did that come from? Not so sure 'anxiety' sums up the period, either. The anxiety came when people paid for their indulgences in the 2000s. The 90s always felt like an interregnum to me, like a waiting room before New Labour really finally ended British life forever.

Yeah, I wasn't clear whether that was saying that Bob is the epitome of someone who continued to mature and evolve or whether they were saying he was trying to maintain his youth. I would say the first statement is what's true: he has continued to mature and evolve for 30 plus years now.

Narration is so after it’s time! You would’ve made a killing in the 80s and 90s with 900 numbers. Call in to hear this monologue about a band, then after that you can have a personal discussion, about the music… then who knows?? 😂💰💰😂

I am a big fan of the band, and I get the sarcasm about corporate money, but bear in mind bills you have to get paid and they're not Reinventing the wheel. Admittedly this band isn't guns'n'roses and it didn't take that long but it took long enough for this and the next album. In the meantime you got to live on something so money has come in so it's a balancing act between being commercially viable and artistic you can't just simply throw money into the fire for the sake of creating art. After all the band was complaining about Lani the label has to get something back for its investment to just saying Kevin Shields needs to learn how to work a little faster
