It has been a long time since I‘ve read Cannery Row, but I enjoyed it so much. Steinbeck certainly is one of my favorite American writers, too. My son adored the “medieval rodents” of Redwall back when he was young. We’ll have to listen to this together next time he’s home!

Another very enjoyable video. Thank you. In my neck of the woods, one local independent bookstore closed in January and recently, so did another. I live in a remote area, so it’s an hour or so to the nearest bookstores. Luckily, we have our libraries.

I've never read Cannery Row but I think I'd enjoy it. I've always heard Brian Jacques pronounced "Jakes." Sounds like it's time for a Redwall revival! One time in the 90s when I taught sixth grade reading, a student brought his real cat, wearing a costume and wielding a foil wrapped spatula, as part of a Redwall book report!

Hi Kim, I'm sorry the bookstore is closing. I'm fearful for the future of reading in the coming generations. I read "The Grapes of Wrath" many years ago and Cannery Row sounds familiar. I either read it or watched the movie if there was a movie. I want to restart reading the Torah. It helped me so much when I read before bed. I've been having a stressful month. Aloha friend.

Professor KIM: I'm only 280 miles away! I hope you find a few great books. Internet friend and Booktuber loves Brian Jacques and that's where I first heard of this author. I'm grateful for all the independent/used bookstores in Northern NJ that are no more than 40mins away. Great content.

Hi Kim. You know, I led a parent-teacher book group on Haidt’s earlier book, and as you were talking about his new book on cellphones, I was thinking, “This sounds like the earlier book,” and then that’s exactly what you said. How disappointing. I was kind of looking forward to reading the cell phone book as I’ve observed so much that is really disturbing among students and clients. I know of several young girls who have had to transfer schools in high school because of social media bullying-really horrible stuff. I was thinking this book might add something to the discussion. But maybe not quite what I’m looking for? I’m a big Steinbeck fan too. You’re making me want to revisit his BIG books. Hope you’re doing well. I came home from Ireland really sick, and I’m just now getting back on my feet. Ugh.

@@BookChatWithPat8668 hi Pat! I hope you’re quickly on the mend and improving fast. ❤️ You’re right. There’s a better book out there. In the second half he talked about raising more independent kids but he lost me as a fan when his advice was universal for kids even though he lived in NYC and has opportunities and privileges most families don’t. It’s horrifying what’s happening to kids in schools and I’d love more thorough information to read.

Great video. Thanks for sharing about Mark. Great book of the Bible. 🥰 There was a bookstore similar to what you’ve described near me. The owner was a widow. She was open on Fridays. She was 85 when she chose to close the store. It was understandable, but heartbreaking. Now, the closest bookstore is 2.5 hours away. What is wrong with ppl and real bookstores (not the big-box)? Don’t they realize how close to extinction quality bookstores are?
