I'm so glad I found your video. I went through the exact same thing with my daughter, who is 7 weeks now. Came home from the hospital with a nipple confusion, because one nurse told me I wouldn't be able to nurse without a nipple shield. Baby girl dropped a lot of weight, jaundice was creeping in, midwives told me to nurse, nurse, nurse and then on night 5 my husband came home from work and found both of us crying while nursing. She had such a poor latch and would chew on the tip of my nipple, so of course she couldn't get the milk out very efficiently. I was in so much pain and was fighting to not push my baby away from me. I remember thinking "you're hurting me. I know it's not your fault, but you are hurting me" and honestly, that's not how I wanted to think about my child. We spoon fed her formula that night, and I thought I was a complete failure because I was not able to breastfeed my child. The next day I got myself a pump and have not looked back. She's thriving, my supply is extremely good and we're both satisfied the way it is. But I also feel like I have to explain myself, because one of the first questions people seem to ask is: "you're breastfeeding, aren't you?" Well yeah I am, with a bottle, but I am, and so proud of me and my girl.

Thank you for your story, I’ve been really struggling and my baby has lost weight too. There’s so much guilt, I’m 2 weeks in and just wasn’t sure if it’s too early to make the switch. This helped, thank you.

@@sweetpeaxox I would totally recommend consulting a lactation nurse, if that is possible for you. I'm still pumping, now for over 11 months and I would do it again any time. But man, sometimes it was really exhausting to spend time feeding her twice - once to pump and once to bottle feed. But it is also really sweet and convenient that my husband can feed her too, any time of day, which buys me some time for myself. At the end of the day, fed is best and you should really do what is best for you and your family. You got this!

Oh God, as if you told my story. Its was such a pain I've never felt in my life. I was literally hiding from my daughter, just trying to postpone the moment of feeding, and she was crying and crying 🤦🏼‍♀️ I wish I knew that time that I can exclusively pump. But that time when my husband was seeing me every day depressed and with tears, he just said : it's enough, and went to bring formula. I felt sooo guilty. Now I'm pregnant again and I'm planning to pump 💪🏻

I just had a baby 9 days ago. I tried to nurse but it just wasn't working. I was having the same issue. She would eat but never be full. The day I decided to start pumping I came across this video, you made me feel like I wasn't failing. I spent my morning balling my eyes out until I watched this. Thank you so much for helping me with this tough choice!

I’m so glad I found this video! Our stories are almost exactly the same. My son can’t latch. I’m currently in the phase where everyone is saying “keep trying” but I’m mentally exhausted from fighting with my newborn every time it’s time to feed. And he gets so frustrated which makes me sad. I’m pumping soooo much milk and was wondering about just bottle feeding. This was super helpful!

Thanks so much for calling out the statement "your baby is the best pump." I have the same situation, my baby has not been the "best pump" my Spectra has been way better. We're still working on breastfeeding, but having someone explain why exclusive pumping worked for them is really encouraging. I'm not sure we're we'll land with our feeding relationship, but thank you for sharing your story.

Pumping is hard. I have similar difficulties with my 2 month old. He latches all right but he is a lazy drinker. He falls asleep as soon as my flow slows down and it is impossible to wake him up. If he is awake sometimes when nursing, he gets fussy and cries when there is not enough milk flow from me. Everyone keep telling me trying to nurse him and all that. But what works for them doesn’t work for me at all. I tried exclusively breastfeed him but he wasn’t gaining any weight during one week. So I guess it means breastfeeding does not work for both of us. I feel you very much. I hope you stay positive. Thank you for letting me know that I am not alone!

Pumping did NOT work for me, so as a working mom, I did a combination of nursing and formula. As far as bonding, while nursing was easiest, I can say that I actually felt closest to my girls when I gave them a bottle because they could snuggle into me and they would just stare at me the whole time they ate. Fed is best! I'm so glad you found something that works so well for your family!

She lost soooo much weight in the beginning and everyone just kept encouraging me to keep trying breastfeeding and keep trying to have her get a better latch but I was in so much pain and baby girl was so frustrated and not getting any food. We switched to exclusively pumping and it has made all of the difference in the world! Baby girl is gaining weight like crazy, and both her and I are so much happier! It's awesome that you found your way to best feed Luka! I am one of those women who couldn't pump no matter how hard I tried for months. Luckily for myself I was able to nurse my son though. Unfortunately I would still get engorged between feedings though & had no relief until he was able to feed again. You're right nursing is very difficult, I had to start supplementing formula a couple times a day because of the pain I was in. All in all feeding our babies is a personal choice/decision, no shame in how it's done so long as the child is healthy & thriving. 💜

My baby is three months old, and our breastfeeding story is nearly identical to yours. After many lactation consultations, we did go to an ENT to check for a tongue tie and we also paid for two speech pathology appointments where a doctor observed us breastfeeding and gave us feeding skills tips, but in the end, no one could help us determine why he wasn't getting enough milk from me despite a good latch and me having a good supply. It is very refreshing to hear that someone else has a similar experience because I don't know anyone who has personally. I'm curious if your new pump is the Willow portable pump. I decided to splurge and get that pump and it has honestly changed my life and is the reason I'm still able to keep pumping (after previously being very discouraged by it). I've used it to pump under my nursing cover on planes and trains and for doing chores around the house or even laying down to take a nap!

Thank you for posting this. With my first, he had a tongue and lip tie that wasn’t even diagnosed until he was about 2 months old. By the time it was fixed and I tried to get him to latch properly, he just wouldn’t latch right because he was so used to the way he had been doing it for 2 months. Finally I decided to just exclusively pump, and my supply went down (I blame the crappy breast pump I had). But I was able to pump a little for him every day and supplement with donated breast milk, so it all turned out ok. He only had a little bit of formula in his first year. So glad I’m not the only one who has had to exclusively pump.

Thank you for sharing and telling us not to feel guilty. When I was 19 I had a lump removed and I didn’t know then but they severed the milk ducts. He was crying so much and like you I didn’t know he wasn’t getting enough. I felt so bad! We tried him on 8 oz bottles and he drank the whole thing at two weeks! lol. You sharing this story and telling women to not feel the guilt is awesome. As long as we do what we feel it best for our babies we are good!

Love this and thank you for doing this series! I’m out of the baby game but I struggled to BF my oldest and ended up switching to formula so much sooner than I wanted. Mommy guilt is real even if some of it was self imposed. I EP’d for my second for almost nine months and then continued to pump/supplement until 12 months. Fed is definitely best!

I want to exclusively pump because my son won’t latch properly (he was born at 37 weeks) and still want to feed him MY milk but at the same time it is very exhausting and i only find myself pumping 3 times a day which is not good, i know.. it’s just i have so many things to do at home and can’t find the time to pump sometimes. I formula feed most of the time because i can only pump up to 2 oz per session (from BOTH breasts) which is a bit discouraging but i am trying to pump more and eating things that can help with my supply. My lactation consultants were telling me the same thing that they told you. I have flat nipples and my son doesn’t like the nipple shield and my nipples wont stay out and it’s so frustrating. I also agree that fed is best.

It is extremely important to pump every 2 hours (throughout the entire day) and pump until empty. If you skip pumping sessions and/or if you don’t get fully empty you are telling your body that you don’t need that milk. Your body works on a demand and supply type of system.

This is so similar to my story! My son has a lip tie and could not latch at all. I had 4 different LC try and help and I’ve tried nipple shields, BF support groups/classes, LC consults and he just couldn’t latch. In the hospital I had to syringe feed my son. I hand expressed and pumped from Day 1. My son, Kai is one month old now and I pump every 2 hours. Sometimes I feel bad that he can’t nurse on me, maybe I should’ve tried harder, but I hated seeing him struggle and in pain. And I was in pain as well, crying with how painful it was. I had the same problem with my first baby. I remember I asked for a formula bottle in the hospital in the middle of the night and she gulped it down and I cried because we were both relieved. I continued to try to breast feed but she seemed to just pacify with it rather than eat and was so hungry just crying all the time. After two weeks of not being able to satisfy her hunger from breastfeeding I decided to start exclusive formula feeding. It was the biggest relief for us both. I didn’t have a pump. It really bothers me that people think that when a baby is bottle fed that there is not a special bond. That is complete nonsense. Feeding my daughter was the best bond ever. Better than when I tried to breast feed her. Thank you for sharing your story. :)

Way to go Ale! I can relate soooo much go this because this is exactly what happened to me like to a TEE! My eldest son is 3 and I exclusively pumped for 6 months straight until my milk supply started to run out and eventually put him on formula. Then my second son was born (he will be 1 in 3 days) and i tried the whole breastfeeding thing again... and it wasn’t working all the lactation consultants kept saying “keep trying” but i said SCREW IT as long as he is fed and once again I exclusively pumped for another 5 months with him! I won’t lie it is extremely exhausting getting up at night and pumping 3+ times a night its physically and emotionally exhausting! I also suffered from PPD with my eldest so everything was just so so hard. But as long as they are fed and happy thats all that matters. You are doing an amazing job❤️❤️

Doesn't matter how you feed, as long as baby gets fed, that is what truly matters!!! My baby was the same way, tried latching and just could not latch or maintain a latch. It was so stressful and I decided to exclusively pump. No one I know exclusively pumps so it was really hard because people dont understand and were so judgemental.

I feel your struggle... I had my first baby recently and had a horrible time getting him to latch. I hand expressed for the first two days in the hospital. Then they gave me a nipple shield and medical grade pump. I got my baby fed with my breast milk! Then I went on antibiotics that hurt his tummy for 7 days and switched to formula and continued to pump and dump.. That was so hard!! I almost gave up on breastfeeding, but my baby did better on breast milk. Finally the pediatrician told me my baby was tongue tied- when that was resolved he was 5 weeks old... he could finally latch, but I had to literally train him to breastfeed. It took a few more days before he would finally latch more comfortably and my boobs were sore... it took me nearly 6 weeks to breastfeed successfully without stress. It’s very hard any route you decide. I would have switched to formula if it wasn’t so hard on my baby’s tummy. Before I had my baby I had heard of mothers trying so hard to breastfeed that they inadvertently starve their baby. I was lucky to have a ton of educational support about feeding my baby. I wish every mother had access to better educational support. I agree fed is best!

Hi! I know this video series is a year old but I wanted to let you know that exclusive pumping is becoming a lot more common! I have a premie baby and it's super common for premie moms/NICU moms to pump exclusively! Our little ones are usually too weak to latch at birth but breastmilk is litteral medication for our littles. It can shorten NICU stays up to two weeks! My little boy had a 10 day NICU stay and I pumped for him during that time period. When I brought him home he was still a very sleepy eater and nursing made him too tired. Now at 4 weeks old my little guy is strong enough to latch, but has so far cracked my nipples and we both have passed thrush back and forth only nursing directly once a day. I got my son evaluated for a tounge tie, and it has been released but his latch is still terrible. He still isn't able to get the milk out and has caused clogged ducts from trying. Because of the current crisis of the corona virus I have not been able to get lactation support or help because it's considered non essential care. Since I've gotten so use to the exclusive pumping schedule I'm pretty certain I will stick with it at this point. It's been quiet a journey. I can defintely relate to your story.

Thank you for this video. Our stories are very similar. My son had a terrible latch and lost so much of his birthweight. I did not have a good supply with him so we used formula. My daughter was just born three weeks ago and her latch has not been great either. This time I have been exclusively pumping though and I love it.

I wish I would of seen this video 3 months ago. My baby is now 3 months but we struggled so much. I would feel sad when pumping and thought I was going crazy. I didn't know it was a thing until just now when I saw this video. Thank you for sharing. I also agree fed is best.

Baby was in the NICU so breast feeding exclusively from the beginning wasn't an option for me. Even after the NICU we were so focused on making sure he was eating enough and gaining weight so we still fed him from the bottle. Plus, we were in survival mode... It just wasn't the best thing for us to do emotionally. Baby is 7 weeks now and we've been trying to breast feed more. But it is so tiring! The baby feeds from me for about an hour and then still acts hungry. So my question is... Is it worth it or should I just stick to pumping? People say it will get easier and he will get faster, I just need to have patience and put the work in.

OMG, same thing happened to us. My baby lost a lot of weight because of a bad latch and severely sore nipples. I am currently pumping and its the best way in our case to really provide what she needs. Yes both nursing and exclusively pumping has down sides and we are still working on some issues with pumping and milk supplies. Anyways, thank you for sharing your experience I currently dont know anyone who had problems pumping nor nursing so its kinda feel good to kinda share it with someone who has the same experience.

Thanks for sharing your story! Im an exclusive pumper as well - same same story - baby latched but does not suck well. She is a sleepy baby and always sleeps on me when she nurses! We had to give her formula at the hospital because my baby is not getting nutrients she needs - which broke my heart a lil bit. // This (being an exclusive pumper) is a decision I made too the moment we brought her home. I dread being judged too. But hell its our decision. Thank you! I feel good knowing that I am not alone. :D

I love this video! So glad I found your channel. Your story is exactly the same as mine. I have been exclusively pumping for 8 weeks now and it is going amazingly well. I wouldn’t have it any other way as you have said and my supply is strong! My son is getting more than enough food from my milk and he is very healthy!

My son lost weight his first two weeks while I was breastfeeding. So I switched to formula to fatten him up. I kept pumping though. My milk started to decrease. I bought supplements, brewer's yeast, milkmaid tea, a bowl of oatmeal everyday, nipple shields to try to keep latching him. A manual pump to catch any droplets from the other breast while i am pumping. I DIYed a sports bra into a pumping bra. I bought a smaller flange for my Spectra. I froze my small stash and gave it to him slowly, letting the formula do most of the work. Here at week five I am trying to get him back on the breast, keep my supply from tanking, make good on the money I have spent out of pocket. It all keeps going down hill though. Down hill on a bicycle with no brakes.

I just want to say Thank YOu!!! I had issues bf with my first one too. I cried and cringed and exclusively pumped with my first. I have a second one and am doing both. I automatically when i got home pumped to get my milk flowing and still breastfeeding my baby . I switch. I breastfeed during the day and bottle feed him breast milk at night. Or if he is hangry i will bottle feed him two oz and just put him in the nipple after. But I’m glad I’m not the only one. And you are right, i used to get really sad pumping with my first one too. And this time around i get it here and there

Almost the same situation here too. My LO is 5 weeks old now and I’ve exclusively pump for 3 weeks and it’s not easy but I know my child is being fed. She was hard to latch, the pain was more than I could bare, and she would fall asleep second after latching making it impossible to wake her up and she wouldn’t feed correctly. I always felt engorged and I started developing mastitis after one day of attempting to exclusively breastfeed. Pumping is not easy but I want to feed my LO the best I can give her.

EP is super hard. I'm nearly 4m EPing because at 5wpp my son was not gaining weight despite a good latch. After exhausting all resources EPing is the way that works for us. I am glad to give him BM but EP is dedication. We went to ENT, lactation, and pediatrician dentist but nothing explained why he wasn't gaining weight but we were marathon feeding those first 5 wks. Once he ate for 80mins. He would only get 1/2 oz from the breast. To all those moms, do what is best for you baby and you. All BM either from breast or bottle, or 50% BM 50% supplement, or all supplement. Fed is best.

Hi, I know this video is old but just to put it out there in case any new moms are watching, a 7-10% loss of birth weight is considered absolutely normal for breastfed babies so you shouldn’t be worried and it definitely doesn’t mean that your milk isn’t enough or that your baby is hungry.

Love that you're doing videos about exclusively pumping since not many KZbin mom bloggers do. I am exclusively pumping as well, my daughter (who is my 1st child) is 7 weeks old, I pump every 3 hours for 15 minutes around the clock. After a good sleep I can get 5 oz total, but normally 3 oz total throughout the day. What is your pumping schedule like? How long do you pump for? How do your breasts know to pump more ounces of milk per pump? As your baby gets older does/should the pumping schedule change? Also would like to see a video on you comparing your pumps! Thank you in advance if you have time to answer my questions!

I have a 3 week old baby boy, we have struggled with breastfeeding as he had quite bad tongue-tie, we had that sorted but then little bubba would fall asleep at the breast after 5/10 minutes and wake up to feed again in less than 30 minutes. He was losing weight and I could never see him being satisfied. I’ve decided to exclusively pump and feed him and this way I know how much milk he drinks, it’s not easy but it’s an option to breastfeeding and it works really well for us, my husband enjoys feeding him as well 🙂

I don't have any kids, but all of my friends do, and I saw what they went through in terms of getting crap from some mothers over how they chose to feed them, whether it was formula, breastmilk from the breast, breastmilk from a bottle, or some combination of the three. My mom formula-fed my sister and I because she didn't want to breastfeed, and she got shamed BIG TIME by other women for it, and this was in 1982 and 1987 respectively. It's sad to see that time hasn't changed some people's opinions about it. As long as the baby is being fed regularly, is gaining weight, and is healthy, how the baby gets fed is none of anyone's business. Too many nosy idiots putting in their $0.02 where it's not needed or wanted.
