As I was preparing my equipment for next weeks hike of the Cleveland Way in Yorkshire, it occurred to me that this is the same gear I use if I go Bikepacking as well.
We all know our Bromptons can carry 10kg front and rear but it’s clearly better if you don’t take that much gear - it just is. I use an app called PackLight, you simply weigh all your kit which goes into a gear inventory. Then, when you plan a trip you give it a name (eg Cleveland Way) and then pack virtually on the app, adding and removing items until you’re happy with the total weight. Finally you use the list as a pack list to ensure you don’t forget anything.
So, here is a quick run through of what 5kg of camping gear & spare clothes - ALL IN - can look like. Imagine how much easier and enjoyable your ride will be without all that weight.
By the way, all my shelters are big enough to get the bike inside also!
the list:

It’s great to see someone talking about going light on a bike. I’m going to check out the toothpaste and soap alternatives.

by the time you add in the weight of walking poles for your tent you would be better just using a light tent

I know though the lightest option is my tarp supported by the Brompton which is a pretty effective shelter.

Really useful video Stu. Any chance you could list the items to save having to stop/start the vedeo?

Yes no worries give me a minute for this technophobic pensioner to work out how to lift the list from the app I use 😂

Very interesting and helpful video Stu. Are you sure about your clothes for a week? No mention of underwear, socks, shirts, trousers, shoes, etc. Or do you just take what you're wearing?

Thanks Julian. I didn’t list the gear that I’ll be wearing and I take no spare shirts etc and only one spare pair of socks and underwear. I operate a wear one wash one cycle - you may not enjoy sitting next to me on the train after one of my hikes! 😂😂😂

I doubt you smell overmuch on the train home Stu, modern hiking / cycling clothing such as the items you detail are excellent. The world has gone a bit mad with regard to it seems the norm now to wash your clothes after just one day’s wear - ridiculous. When touring, I have what I’m wearing plus a spare set and interchange them. I also take a very lightweight nightshirt. All of my clothing can easily be rinsed out every few days to freshen it, it all dries quickly.

@@pootlingalong8928 Exactly!! I think it’s fine to take a load of spare clothes if you feel the need but it’s so unnecessary really. If people give it a try I’m sure most wouldn’t go back to lugging the contents of their wardrobe around.
