This is good. I was thinking a lot of balloons would be popped, which I am sure Andrew was worried about. I don't like those radical therapies. Being at peace with something you fear is a much better approach, so this was pretty on target. The fact that it was all controlled with the silly old-school video game theme was great. I hope those weren't his current third graders though... unless they were the top achievers of the class who got picked for the fun due to their good grades and comportment. Then the third graders learned a lesson too.

Your brother fears balloons?! A rare one but one I thoroughly sympathise with! Had to watch this with the sound off! And I’m not ashamed of it. Fireworks, Christmas crackers and party poppers too. What’s so stupid about being scared of loud, sudden explosions and their sources? It’s a rational fear overall in most cases! They’re basically explosions waiting to happen, and so cavalierly tossed around all over the place by the least responsible of people who can’t empathise remotely, and who often actively enjoy scaring suckers like me. I can just about cope with them being there if I can’t SEE them or if I’m watching them with sound turned off but no WAY would I EVER be able to do this! No matter what the reward! Maybe for a loved one’s life or for my own life, but that’s about it. Cellophane ones and water balloons are fine for me - no pop potential with them - but the rubber ones - NOPE NOPE NOPE NOPE. Andrew, you’re a brave man. I’m sorry you had to go through that!

hey I definitely dont feel comfortable with balloons either...what sucks is one of my husband's random talents is making balloon animals, and a lot of times at kid events he'll bring his balloons with him and make free ones for the kids there, who then promptly drop them on the grass so that they pop...my kids also try to make their own balloon animals, so there's popping everywhere. But I feel even worse for my dogs, who are scared of balloons even BEFORE they pop -_- to say nothing about the shreds of burst balloons that litter the ground and never biodegrade!!!

After being injured when someone shoved a party popper (the ones that shoot little streamers out) in my face near my eyes and set it off I refuse to be anywhere near people who fool around with them. I don't mind if people are sensible but can't cope with having them pointed towards me. The idea of something going wrong and ending up with long term injury from something that is meant to be fun means I'm a party pooper and warn people about it. Thankfully i have no long term physical damage to my eye or face, just a fear of people who play around with party poppers.

I'm so sorry that happened to you, though not surprised. People sometimes get silly and bullyish about such things at parties, and party poppers are frequently also at parties. The least people at parties can do is let people decide their own comfort zones with such things, instead of hunting them out and shamelessly, gleefully invading their space with the very things they don't like, in ways they can't escape. So, so glad Peet didn't do that to Andrew here, but I'd never have thought he would have - he's too basically decent for that, even with all the outward sibling rivalry!
