One reason why European cities are so different to North American cities, is that North America (both US and Canada) has extremely strict zoning laws. In North America modern zoning laws prevent commercial and residential buildings, as well as different types of residential buildings, from being build in the same zone. Only areas that were zoned before the modern zoning laws, are different types of buildings allowed to be build together. Also most of North America has been zoned for single family homes. These factors have created the massive carbon copy suburbs, that are rare in rest of the world. They are also the reason why North America is so car dependent, residential areas are so far away from stores, schools, hospitals, etc., people can't just walk to their corner shop or to school. This is also the reason why North American cities go from skyscrapers immediately to suburbs.

@@Quotenwagnerianer Thank you for restoring my faith in the German commentariat.
@KNYD2 жыл бұрын
@@Quotenwagnerianer Oh it gets worse when you realise the zoning laws have racist roots. In part the zoning laws were created to protect people from harmful chemicals and unsafe living conditions, when workers lived right next to factories. Later however when discrimination based on race became illegal, and people still wanted to prevent certain people from moving into certain neighbourhoods, lawmakers had to get creative. By making neighbourhoods consist only of one type of housing, they could make some neighbourhoods too expensive for certain people. This is also around the time redlining was born, it prevented people living in specific neighbourhoods (neighbourhoods that consisted of minorities) from getting a mortgage, trapping them to only renting and being unable to buy property. They also couldn't move, because they couldn't afford to live in a different neighbourhood. This is how their zoning laws became so extreme.
@erics11402 жыл бұрын
This is only partially true . I am from Chicago and lived in the city for many years. I did not have a car for a vast majority of that time. In most large American cities ground floor retail is required so you can easily get almost anything you want / need a short walk away.Also, in most cities you do not go from skyscrapers to suburbs. FAR , floor to area ratio, or how high you can build varies within cities. Simply look at an aerial of Manhattan, Chicago , LA, SF to be able to see this visually. Skyscrapers are clustered based on that FAR, some of which are mixed use or residential . These high FAR zones give way to lower density zones. I'm not suggesting that a great deal of North America is not car dependent but rather there are pockets that are not.
@emjayay2 жыл бұрын
I think Houston has no zoning laws and being built mostly after WWII it is almost all sprawl. Zoning is not the only or even basic reason. It does get in the way when a city grows and people want to tear down existing houses and put up apartments in closer-in areas.

Also, there aren’t many public places left where you are permitted to smoke.

the difference in smoking rates is actually not that big, based on 2018 data about 28% of Germany smoke regularly and the rate for the US is 25.1% based on the same statistics. both countries are firmly over the average rate of 22% so it probably comes down to that you are now spending more time in a small city where you are more likely to run into smokers then in the US and you are more likely to notice them cause they will always stand outside cause smoking inside restaurants and many other businesses is banned.

The ruin on Einkorn is/was a church, not a castle ( look at the windows, and there are no fortifications). The ,castle' Großcomburg was a ,Chorherrenstift' , not a monastry. The difference: A monk could under no circumstances marry, and money or ground with which he came , belonged to the monastry. A Chorherr ( mostly urban upperclass from a noble family) could leave the Chorherrenstift, and got money or ground back. Also he could marry after leaving the Chorherrenstift. So , for example a young nobleman went into a Chorherrenstift to have a life like a monk. But one day he heard, his brothers all died and he is last male of his noble family. In such a case, a Chorherr could go back to castle and estate of his family. Schwäbisch Hall switched in 16th century to protestantism, so Chorherrenstift Großcomburg perhaps was an independent ( reichsunmittelbares) territory of HRE.

Cigarettes' is the number one thing in Germany that you almost never see in the States. Americans may be fatter but our lungs are a lot cleaner!

Yep cigarette use is kind of sad over here... For some odd reason it still has shreds of the 1970s "cool" image, idk.. But it does seem to me like smoking has become more of a lower class thing to reduce unfortunate life circumstances..

Major props to Germany for the courage to post REALISTIC cigarette warning labels! Boo to the U,.S. for its corporate culture that is allowed to consume it's citizens for the minority at the top who controls business and lobbyists. So it's Germany for realism and social conscience, and the U.S. for making people's health for sale. Too extreme? :)

hey mikey, it`s not cold here. remember that S`Hall is around the 49 latitude ( like Vancouver CDN for example). And the reason for " rechts vor links (right first)" is to slow down the traffic in neighbourhoods because we have WALKING people her on the sreets 😉😂😂

People here ( the netherlands) collect the images on cigarett boxes. Don't know if they do that in Germany too. Now the german supermarket Lidl doesn't sell tobaco anymore, and there are lots of adds with kids wanting a smokefree country.

Tell your brother Micky that for middle Europeans it is necessary suffer through the long cold, grey and rainy autumn and winter time in order to really really truly appreciate spring and summer time! And of course we get drunk quite often in autumn, winter as well as spring and summer time! 😉😂

Although his hairstyle is highly offensive and tough for the common eye to behold...😅...joking aside, your little brother seems to be a real cool nice guy. I hope mike will absolutely love his time in Germany and have wonderful moments and memories for a lifetime. Maybe meeting a hot German chick 🐥 as well 😇 I moved in late 2017 from Pennsylvania to Germany and despite the current annoying pandemic handling in Germany, it was the best decision and I love Germany 🇩🇪 Have a great time you two.

According to wikipedia, the percentage of smokers in the US is 25,1 percent, in Germany it's 28 percent, so there isn't really a big difference. Maybe it's in the amount of cigarettes these smokers consume or it's just done more in public, i don't know.

It's like alcohol. No public drinking, but behind the doors (or in the bags) is drunk just as...
