James - you beauty!!! The inserts are a stellar idea... I love my 'non-camera-bag' camera... erm... bag, and this suddenly makes what was a constant 'lucky-dip' moanathon into something almost vaguely ordered, allowing me the off-chance of catching a glacier in mid-creep. Thanks!!

Your PD backpack swing issue is easily solved. Below the locking brackets on the shoulder straps are small loops. Attach an anchor to each loop for easier grip. Just before you swing the backpack around pull on the loop to loosen the strap slightly, i.e. make it longer. It'll then be much easier to swing around. As you loosen the strap, you also have much more flexibility in positioning the bag in front of you. It hangs a little lower on your chest, which makes for much easier access to gear. I typically wear my pack high. When I need to access gear, I pull both loops to lower the pack evenly, and then swing around. It took me five minutes to figure out a smooth and efficient way. The main trick was to attach the anchors, which simplified quickly finding the loops with my hand.

Great video. I was just going through my closet thinking how to organize all my bags. I have all but one of my bags. I still use them all. ThinkTank has really been nailing it with style. I bought the Spectral 15 several months ago and love it! I don’t like camera bags that look like camera bags either. The Spectral looks good when I wear a suit or jeans. I can fit all my regular gear easily. My first big and expensive bag I bought is the Billingham 550. Enormous and great if you’re going to be out all day taking photos and also want to take food and sweater/breaker. Amazing bag! Those Brits I tell ya. :-) All I want now is a ThinkTank International v3 and I’ll be set with bags for quite a while. I know. Famous last words.....

Cool video, in the past i was looking aswell for a bag wich i could swing around to swap lenses and went for the Lowepro flipside 400AW. Perfect size for carry-on luggage and with labels removed, it also doesn't look like a camera bag. Its big enough to hold my mirorless camera and 6 lenses + travel tripod inside. I've used it on a 5 months backpacking trip around asia and australia 5 years ago, and still use it to the current day. After 5 years travelling the globe its starting to show its end of its life and am looking into buying the exact same bag again, perhaps the version 2 wich released last year. Might be a good consideration if you are still looking into swing around bags wich are comfartable to hike and walk around with. And anti theft aswell.

Audio is fine :-) Enjoyable video once again :-) Got me thinking about my bags and how I can't dicide which one I like better... I use a messanger bag and individual lens pouches sometimes and a dedicated camera rucksack othertimes. The rucksack is more comfortable to wear but to change lenses or store the camera(s) away I always have to put it on the ground. Been thinking about getting one of those "slingshot" bags before but I guess they'll weigh as much on the shoulder as the messanger bag, without the possibility to change the shoulder you wear it on. So the perferct solution to me would be: get rich and hire a caddy 😁 Cheers from Germany Sören 😊

Wow, I can very much relate to owning many bags and carrying tons of gear. A few years ago I realize I do not look like a mule and do not play a mule on TV. Being that is the case (pun intended) I very much cut back on my carry kit. My usual kit is a light meter, film Rangefinder with two lens, 35mm and 50, both lens can fit in my pockets yet I often take the red fanny pack slinging it across my body. Depending on the shoot change to a film SLR, three prime lens, 28mm, 50mm, sometimes the 135mm. Each kit weights less than three pounds (1.4 kg). With either kit if I cannot capture images I need (required) then it is me not the gear. At the end of a long days shoot, hike, client, and the like, my back and shoulders now feel much better I do not feel beat. YMMV.

Billingham every time. They are still the best. No noisy velcro and they are water proof. If you have expensive gear then you need an expensive bag (that is what I told my wife). My other bag is a LowePro Flipside 200 which was second hand but as new and cost me twenty quid.

I got both the Retrospective 5 and 7. Bought the 7 first and it was the perfect size for my A7ii with the 55mm, pluss the 28mm, 85mm Batis and the 70-200mm f/4. But it was occasionally too big for me so, I bought the 5 when I didn't want to drag with me the 70-200mm. The 7 is also useful if I want a flash with me instead of the 70-200mm. Of course if I want drag all that gear, plus a flash (or for that matter two), I got the Urban Disguise 40 (2nd itteration I think). That has probably the same space as the Retrospective 7, but it has elastic rooms at the side, which the retrospective don't have, does room can fit a flash. I actually owned the Disguise first, but it has a black laptop back/office look, which I'm not that fan off. Okay if I'm driving around in a car, but if I'm going around a city, I feel the Retrospective series look better. The 7 is actually the leather version, leather pinestone, and the 5 is just pinestone. I both all of these should bags on sale. The only one I haven't bought on sale was my first one, the Mirrorless Mover, which was perfect for my first kit, the A6000, with the Sigma 30mm, 60mm and the kit lens. Then I bought the 18-105mm f/4, and suddenly I could just with the camera with that one, and there was no point of the bag (you can always carry the Thinktank raincover in your pockets, and put your camera in it if it rains). I do have a Lowepro bag for hiking, but I don't like the design of the insert.

Comment spree! (Not really, only my second xD). Thank you so so much for this video! It has answered so many questions I didn't even know I had before I watched it. I've been looking, briefly, at options but I disliked most of them. Either due to size restraints, or price. I didn't know that I most likely don't want a camera looking bag; as you also mention. I'm using an Eastpak, which isn't great - But it might become much more suitable with a small handy case for my cam and kit.. Currently I'm using a "spare bag" from my Blue Yeti headset lol But you are right (to some degree)! A bag should be able to fit a lunch - I'm just so fortunate I have a bunch of plastic containers I could use when I'm out of cling film hahah

I have some great bags (mainly Lowepro) and NO bag does what you want. it just can't carry the kit you want to carry, and NR headphones, passport etc. for on a plane and a bit of room for clothes. They are all a compromise. And I know - travel light but it seems daft to have a range of lenses to do the jobs and leave them home for a super zoom with all the travel photos waiting to be taken.

The biggest challenge I've encountered so far in photography goes a little something like this. Buy shiny new bag, take said bag home, open it and find the positioning of the dividers will not accommodate any of my stuff. Proceed to rip all the dividers out (because there's nothing more satisfying than the sound of ripping new dividers out and it's a good workout) then stare at the huge mountain of velcro hell for several hours and wonder where the f*** they all came from. Struggle for hours trying to arrange them just how I want. Find there is no arranging them just how I want. Wonder how to put them back as they were originally. The Photography Show is fast approaching and my enthusiasm is dampened knowing I may be going through all of this again very soon 😆

Good video: Moral of the story, don't buy cheap bags your going to need to replace later anyway. Try to think about your needs first, then find the right bag. It was definitely nice to see you go over all the various bags you've had over the years... I'm having fun looking for a "proper" one right now myself... The AmazonBasics sling bag works (sort of), but it sure isn't all that comfy, and it rocks all over the place, fairly badly too once you put two camera bodies into it.... As for the word you were looking for, most call those thingies "camera bag inserts". Since you're rocking ThinkTank, any plans on giving some of the gear from their sister company a try? MindShiftGear. it's stuff specifically aimed at those being out and about outdoors and whatnot (aka active people who want good gear, and/or people going out into the middle of nowhere in a forest, on a mountain, etc)

Mate really???? The Peak Design Backpack is the perfect camera bag! :D :D Also good luck with the Think Tank velcro... after a few weeks it didn't work anymore :( great bag but such a disappointment.

As an extension of your beginner's mistakes video, let me add the beginner's mistake for camera bags. It took me a long while to accept this but...bags you transport your gear in from place to place (or, usually in my case, country to country as carry on) are invariably no good at all as working bags and likewise, working bags are usually poor transport bags.

The background somehow made me assume you're in Japan. The most annoying thing for me to carry is the tripod, in most times I either leave it at home or at the car.

Finding a perfect camera bag for yourself is sooo much harder than finding a proper camera. It is hell, total hell. I still can't find the smallest possible rainproof bag for my X-T 10 with kit sized lens. They are either way too large or way too small and mountaineering photography demands minimalist designs.

Bags bags! I've been through countless bags, a video would have to be a series longer then Coronation Street... My next might be a ThinkTank Retrospective...

I've had a Retrospective 5 for years, great bag. Even with a heavy camera and lens in, it's very easy to carry. I will get a bigger one, though, after seeing this great video. I think I'm going to give up buying cameras and just collect bags! Domke is my usual carry-around one. Two others are Tamrac shoulder bags. They are lovely but have one serious flaw - the strap on the buckle doesn't expand, so you're limited as to what you can safely fit in them.

This made me laugh, the only swinging you would do with that huge monster bag, has naff all to do with photography. I use a backpack provided by a well known camera seller for my DSLR needs, so lenses, bodies etc.. done weddings out of it and what have you. I use a Billingham Hadley small for my small Leica kit, and this manages that with filters and other stuff easily. Pissed my sides at the secondary camera angle.. sort of thing I would do.. lol.

Cheers Dave, never owned a Billingham - they look like works of art, a perfect fit for Leica gear :)

They are works of art, but Billingham as a company have awesome customer service, and I can get my ageing D300s and a lens in it if I need, so its not all Leica, Fuji, or Sony orientated.. I love it, weather proof, stylish, durable and above all else awesome in use.

See now my other half says cause I have loads of bags that I have a bag fetish. I don't agree, every bag has a purpose. Glad to see you feel the same and glad to see you don't spend a fortune on bags either - function over brands. Great stuff. Doesn't the messenger bag hurt your shoulder or back after a while?
@csaszi1986

It dipends on the padding, but you can always switch schoulder :D For everyday use i prefer messenger bagds, however if you are going for a hike, you might need the backpack. I had a horrible mesenger bag from cullmann.. it's strap was poorly designed and irritated my neck in 0/24... so.. whatever you are looking for, try it on first with some weight added to the bag first.. :)

ha, absolutely Keith! Yes for me the messenger bags come unstuck if you need to carry a lot of water or a heavy tripod. For scouting missions they're perfect though I find :)
