This is a good reminder for me to set up custom settings on my Canon. I shoot mainly landscapes, birds, and macros; the settings are very different for each. Hopefully it will save me a little time.

It took me a while to figure out how you got the record button to choose the image size but was well worth. I found this video really informative. I have now know what the Custom functions on the dial do. This has really made my decision to switch to Olympus more worthwhile. Thanks for sharing this. 👍

@mike chesworth Photography, can you share how you set the record button for image format? Been struggling myself! I checked in Button B1 setting but didnt find the Image format option to assign to any button. I am using EM1.3

I used to have the Lumix DMC GX8 with a similarly wide array of f buttons and custom dial settings. It was horribly un intuitive. Switched to the XT-3 and am very happy with the physical dials and levers for most of the most commonly changed settings. And there are a few well placed custom buttons for anything else. I do not miss trying to remember all of these custom settings!

The only setting that I've changed on my cameras is to Back Button Focus. I've given up on custom settings because I don't remember what I've programmed in to them 🤔😂

The depth-of-field preview suggestions seems very intriguing - I used to use that all the time on my DSLR - but never thought about it w/ my mirrorless (Fujfilm X-T/3) - I tend to use their helpful depth-of-field indicator (scale on the bottom) or its focus-peeking. I will for sure give your suggestion a try! Thanks so much, very informative!

On the XT-3 the DOF preview can be linked directly to the shutter release, so a half press of the shutter stops the lens down and you get a live preview of the scene as it will be shot, no separate button required.

Really interesting. I’m a Panasonic user (G9) and still haven’t figured out all the bells and whistles yet - if I ever do! There were a couple of penny-drop moments for me so I will be watching this video again to pick out relevant things. Remembering what’s allocated to a function button is almost impossible - maybe a little laminated wallet card!!

On DLSR's (Nikon) when you press the DOF button in LiveView you get what you get with a ML. I use it to get my focus absolutely spot on.

I don't have anywhere near as many programmable buttons but I should revisit the two I have set on the front of my D7000. Currently Fn is set to select between "non-cpu lenses" but except for rare experimental outings I'm down to a single 300mm ai lens and DoF is set to spot metering.

Nice! I like how you use DoF but I can't get it to work on my EM5 mkii. I focus on my foreground and turn on DoF Preview then I use my magnify button and the d-pad to select a background element. When I turn my aperture dial it adjust the amount of magnification instead of aperture. Actually, both dials change magnification. Is there a setting I can't find (or don't have) to change that? Thanks so much for the video no one asked for even though it's been very helpful!

I figured it out! For those EM5 mkii users here's how to do it. First you must be in Manual and focus on your foreground! Next, turn on DoF Preview and use the magnify button to zoom in on a background element. When in the magnified view hit your "Info" button to activate the +/- and you'll be able to use your dials to adjust aperture and shutter speed. The +/- option doesn't appear in Aperture Priority. There's a setting in Menu D called DoF Lock, with it on the DoF Preview button becomes a toggle so you don't have to press and hold to see the preview. Thanks again Craig!

Sorry Craig, but your description of the back button focusing didn't equate (unless I am hearing this all wrong) You said that you were in manual focus mode, but used BBF to lock on, then fine tune manually. BBF is used in auto-focus mode surely? I have the same camera and tried switching to manual in camera and on the lens and it doesn't work.

cynical1952 Yes, the camera is in manual focus mode, but the rear button still triggers the autofocus. Make sure you set the AEL/AFL in the menu to S3/C3/M3

Set my D500 to LOCKED AF-C in the menu. Don't know how I managed to mess things up during a shoot, but it moved from AF-C to AF-S. Lost loads of "runner images" due to my clumsiness. ARGH!
