I'm sure this has already been said, but just in case it hasn't. Midges hate citronella, so citronella candles will keep them at bay. The best thing to put on your skin to stop yourself being bitten is Avon's Skin So Soft. I lived in Scotland for 17 years and a lot of that was spent living in the wilds of the west and east coast.

*Safe midge bug protection: Most NATO militaries use a process of dipping uniforms, underwear, socks, etc., in a water/"permethrin" solution. If you are near any hiking or outdoor stores, you can ask about products they have. You dip all clean clothes in the solution and let drip dry. Good to go for 3-6 months. I even think the clothes can be washed and will keep the protection active. Obviously it won't work on exposed skin (that's where regular bug repellant comes in) but, it will work on clothing and any surface you spray on. GOOD LUCK with the bugs!

Painted stone trails started during covid in the woods near here, it was rather sweet & life affirming. Long gone now though I think. Midges are a real pain, not safe cooking with no ventilation so hopefully all sorted. The flinty paths must be tough on bike tyres, Winston was so funny when you wanted him back in his trailer!

Yeah, we went to Scotland a couple of years ago. Weather, just like yours, midges, just like yours, we even watched them come in through the fly screen - nothing gets through that, and to top it all, I couldn't find a scenic walk or trail without people and cars queuing up to use it. We're giving it another go next year, better prepared, hopefully. Decent vlog, cheers, Winston's a little trooper!

Roz, unfortunately the peace and tranquility of Glentrool and Galloway is about to be ruined forever if the Galloway National Park Association get their way and persuade the Scottish Government to make this area a national park. The very reason people like yourself come to this area is for the scenery, the small towns and the peacefulness. I can't believe there are people living here that want to turn the region into another lake district or cairngorm. So pleased you liked my home region ❤

Hello and good day to you both, Unfortunately I only got around to watching your video now. Yes, the mosquitoes or whatever they are can be annoying. When we were still camping, we also had an exterminator that killed the cattle, but you just can't catch them all, so we also have a small cordless vacuum cleaner and whenever we go Whatever we saw, we soaked it up. Great video, very nice with the painted stones. If the brakes on your bike are squeaking, it's usually the brake pads (pads) that have become hard and maybe even a bit dirty. Clean them with a little detergent and water with a brush, sponge or cloth. You can also try cleaning the surface of the blocks a little Let's rough it up with some sandpaper or install new ones. Just never put oil on it then you will no longer have any braking effect. Greetings Oldie 👍

Thanks so much! The bike is relatively new, so I think the brakes just need adjusting and roughing up a bit. 👍🏼 Thanks so much for watching and following the adventure 😀

@@Roz.S Yes, yes, almost new, the wheel is ok, but rubber parts age even if you don't use them. See car tires that age yourself at the tire dealer. I once had a bike like that and didn't have any other advice, so I installed leather blocks and from then on it was quiet. Have a good time and don't let the mosquitoes or bugs eat you up. Greetings Oldie👍

I go up the west coast every May and never had much trouble with midges. Once I went right to the top but usually cut across from Ullapool to Inverness then make my way back down through the Cairngorms. This year I left later and for the first time had a similar experience as you with them on my last day at Oban and that was enough for me. I only book my sites as I go so I cut the trip short and headed over to Rosemarkie which was midge free. I'd take mosquitoes over them any day.

Hi Roz, I'm no green warrior, but at the same time I don't like using chemicals in enclosed spaces where I stand a good chance of breathing them in. In midge season I would leave a couple of small mesh bags full of Lavender in my tent, both when up and packed away, may be my imagination, but I'm sure it at least reduced their inclination to share my space. Don't know if a small amount of essential oil smeared near vents and your doorway would help too, but cheap enough to try.

Get a flextail insect repeller, should work a treat in that space.

Midges will get through the material… you should get some Avon So Soft (oil based version) that should reduce the biting… honestly though, worst time of year to go to Scotland.. it’s last week of April or forget it (although I am planning on going in October!

Hope you have a great trip! I went last year in September and wasn't bothered by them. Thanks so much for watching.

We bought a Flextail bug zapper for our trip to Scotland but we didn't get any so haven't got a review yet. Loved your Dales trip as that is my local! Just love that boy 🤎 and you of course 😊
