My Carmax Buying Experience ~ Transfer and In-Store process

Here's a run down of my experience purchasing a car from Carmax. The process was long, but I'm satisfied with my Toyota RAV4.

Carmax has an option where you can upload all documents before coming in! You can also bypass going in all together and get your car delivered which is super cool for people that’s busy.

Thank you for this information. I've long wondered about CarMax. That they allow a 20 - 30 minute test drive without the distraction of a salesman sounds like a desirable feature to me. Seven hours at the dealer, though...

Same ! Had a '15 veloster turbo . Absolutely love my car ! Had it 6 years . I had positive equity ! Only owed 3k left. But deff on its last leg not engine light wise but it had seen better days but wasnt terrible. 88k miles. Starting college etc & i knew it was time travel wise , maturity wise and where i was. I got my black color from carmax @ 9k miles oretty much new. Had it shipped from texas to vegas 🙌🏽 cant wait ti get it at the end of the month. It truly helos when you know what you want.

I really enjoyed your video. So many hours waiting on your car...that was bad. At least it worked out for you. I really never thought about going to any place except a dealership. Now they just want too much, MSRP up 50% or more, it's insane. Carmax is really a good alternative for us. Looking for a Ford EcoSport. They are hard to find in Illinois.

Clicked on this video to find out if the transfer fee is refundable - figured it wasn't. Ended up watching the whole video - thanks for sharing your story - 7 hours is brutal but glad you were able to get an awesome RAV4 - LOVE the color.

Just an fyi to people looking to buy with Carmax…. The approvals are car and store specific so if you get your car shipped from one store to another, it’s possible the approval you originally received won’t be available. At least that’s what the online sales team told me

Correct. So I was going to transfer my car from the Vegas location to the PHX location where I live. Shipping was going to take longer than I had time to wait. I was approved with financing at the PHX dealership. When I cancelled the shipping because I was going to drive to Vegas and pick up the car. I did have to reapply for financing for the Vegas store. My numbers came back the exact same though and instant approval. So no issues. It was really easy. Promise ❤

I hope you got the car looked at before you bought it, I worked there for 2 years and before I left many cars were getting returned because of not being looked at properly. Good luck with your car!

i just got myself a 2020 nissan versa sv. i'm a toyota person but i think I dropped the gun too fast and this is what i ended up leaving the lot with, lol i'm grateful, its the perfect car for me. all glory to god! i have videos of my car on my channel and videos about the process of getting my car etc! :)

Don't worry! The Versa is a much better car than a Toyota would be. I used to be a Toyota/Lexus owner, but no more. They're AWFUL now.

Nice vid. Very informative. In my experience a good credit score is all that’s really needed. Once in the mid-high 700’s they don’t really care to much about pay stubs. I guess they figure your score doesn’t get there without some form of income.😂

This was so helpful. I just had them ship a car from south of Chicago to Delaware. My estimated time is 2 weeks for arrival but the estimated time for the car to be ready is a month. Hoping that’s just precautionary

I doubt it will take that long! Did you receive an email with tracking info? As soon as you see it’s arrived, I’d give them a call to schedule your Appt.

I have a 2021 Toyota RAV4 hybrid fully loaded….I LOVE IT…my credit isn’t good and ended up putting half of it down and financed the rest of it…it was around $48,000-$52,000…but I am so happy with it….

Not at all, I believe you should be able to cancel the whole process if you change your mind. However if you paid a transfer fee like I did to get the car shipped from somewhere, I believe that’s non refundable.

Did the total price of the vehicle differ greatly from the price that carmax told you over the phone initially before transferring the vehicle?

Did you initially apply online or did you do everything with the sales rep at the dealership? I’m looking to purchase a Mercedes thru CarMax, did the entire online app and got approved! Just don’t know if this is the actual approval , ain’t tryna get a denial after getting approved lol it mentioned to me next steps to finalize was just provide paystubs and I can do an express pickup.

Yes I started the process online, and was already approved with finance and everything before I went in. So it sounds like you’re good and shouldn’t have anything to worry about! Enjoy your new car 😎

You are very easy on the eyes and have such a sweet and easygoing personality. Made it very easy to watch till the end! We are also in the market for a 2020 or newer Rav4 XLE Premium. We did the 24hr test drive with Carmax. It was hard not to buy it, but here at the end of January 2023, prices are still very high on cars, and even more at Carmax. We are going to wait till Summer and hopefully, prices will be down some, at least that is what the experts say. Cash buyers so not worried about interest rates.

CarMax cars are 5-8K above book value. This and their "no haggle" policy is how they make their profit. There is no such thing as paying the price the dealer wants you to pay. The same vehicle can be found for sale online cheaper in multiple places. If you know how to purchase a car without overpaying, Car Max is the last place a consumer would go to.

ok this scares me 😅 the woman who helped me said that i wouldn’t have to provide proof of income unless the loaner asked for it. my issue is not being at my job long enough to have my first pay stub. but my car is supposed to be delivered next week, after i get my paystub, so hopefully that works

I financed through CarMax financial services and didn’t need proof of income. Anyone besides CarMax financial that CarMax partners with will ask for proof of income. Hope that helps

I did create an account so that I was able to place the car on hold. When it comes to making payments for the car? I believe most finance companies have an online payment system.

Did you receive a shipping confirmation email when your car shipped out??? I ordered a car to be transferred from Florida to North Carolina. About 393 miles. They told me I would receive an email when it shipped out but never did. I did call my dealership and they said it already left Florida which is odd.

I did receive one once it shipped, but never received anything when it had arrived. I just refreshed the tracking screen daily to keep up with where it was. I’m sure yours will be there soon, congrats on your purchase!

I did get an email when it was shipped. They give you a "track" but not too detailed

@@karialise6629 I worked there and when you transfer a car if it is located in Houston or Dallas where it’s at. They can cancel the transfer and if they have a customer there, they can sell the car and with the inventory being low. Many transfers were cancelled and the cars were sold at that same location.

I think it really depends on your credit and income situation. I had to put a down payment when purchasing my car.

Did your down payment change when finished with putting your information in at the end ? That's the only thing I'm worried about . That happened to me with carvana , It said $1,600 down payment , then when I put my information in & was ready to purchase my down payment went up to $10,000

Yes it did unfortunately, I ended up putting down a significant amount more than what I initially thought I would. :( a big factor in this though was that I was upside down in my previous car loan!

That didnt happen to me so she is definitely right it can depend on your situation. I was shocked they didnt even ask for proof of income which really enhanced my experience. It probably depends on your credit history and the amount you wanted to put down.

If you don’t mind me asking how much did you pay for your maxcare? Also do they need the money upfront when you’re transferring the vehicle or do you pay it when it makes it to the dealership?

I believe the Maxcare was no more than about $30 extra added on to my monthly note. And yes you do have to pay the transfer fee upfront, they will “hold” the vehicle for you which makes it unavailable for anyone else to inquire about it. But in order to get it transferred to you, they will have you pay first.

I definitely want to try to get that Max care as well as the gap insurance if I end up purchasing a new vehicle. Did you get gap insurance?
