my adopted catahoula leopard dog, Baron, climbing a tree for fun. We got him July 5 2010 and discovered that he has a LOVE for trees and climbing.

hahaha my catahoula does the same thing.once i put her out back and when i went to bring her in,she was on the roof.she had climbed the tree that sits right next to my house and got on the roof.its a really big oak so the branches were thick enough that she could walk on them with no problem.lol it took forever to get her down tho.

My Catahoula didn’t climb trees but he would dive down the ravine and climb back up like it was nothing. It was a vertical drop but he would use those tough claws and I was astounded at his speed and endurance. He would go all day. What a fantastic dog. It’s been a year since he died and I still cry over how much I miss him. 💔 He was a brave, loyal, loving fellow. Great sense of humour too.

I have a Catahoula. She is turning 12 later this month. Last year we had to amputate her leg from cancer... It saved her life. Anyway... She used to climb the tree and bounce on the limbs like a mountain goat... and climb on the roof. She'd jump onto the trampoline from the roof... Fortunately she never hurt herself.

My Leopard Cur would climb a 12 foot extension ladder on the backside of our carport and run around on the carport roof and then jump off and land with a thud, then do it again. That was 30 years ago and I’ve never seen anything that comes close to “Moose”’s bravery, loyalty,or intelligence!

He does lots of other stuff (agility, swimming, walking) but I always make sure not to over due it. Baron's only a year and a half so I'm watching it carefully! Well she's 3 now, & hasn't climbed over the fence. Do any of you CLD owners notice that your dog has unusually long quicks in their nails? And really sharp nails. Is that a CLD thing? I trim them but have to be very careful not to get the quick. Never had a dog with nails like this before.

I have one. She is a great dog, but very active. You have to have a very active lifestyle because they do not do well without exercise. I take mine for four mile power walks a day. She loves it, but after indoor cycling I am exhausted. She will sleep without a problem throughout the night
@bowtiedavis83326 жыл бұрын
Nice training, my Catahoula will only do it when she’s chasing an animal. If I try and tell her to go up when she’s not chasing, she just sniffs the tree and looks at me like I’m dumb.

I miss my Catahoula baby. His name was Pablo and was the sweetest boy. Big and beautiful. People would literally stop their cars and ask "What kind of dog is that?" He got bone cancer when he was 7 yrs old and it broke my heart. After that I read some studies that if you neuter them before they are sexually mature there are a significant percentage of health consequences. You are basically shutting off the hormone factory as puppies, and that can manifest into bone cancer for larger breeds. Since then I don't get any of my dogs 'fixed' till they are well past a year old.

My catahoula can't do this but she tries, they really really go crazy for squirrels and chipmunks, and one time we both saw a squirrel on a walk in the woods, and I could see her tensing up and I'm like quiet, quiet, now and let go of her leash and she probably climbed higher than my head (Im 6'1) and only got the fur of its tail and almost landed on me coming down but she was so close. Luckily I calmed her down before she got too obsessed with the chase and away from the bottom of the tree.

He doesn't do it that often actually. He loves it so much it's hard to restrict him, but we usually only let Baron climb once or twice a week. And when we do, he only gets about 5 jumps and then has to stop. Don't worry, he's 4 and a 1/2 now and healthy and happy. Never hurt himself all those years of climbing.

@bIackdeer93 Just because you can't do it doesn't mean the dog shouldn't. My late AmStaff could go 8 feet up into a tree and lived to a ripe old 14. Most dogs will do athletic activities a human wouldn't think of. Imagine a pack of beagles flying through the woods baying after some rabbit. They can break their legs in a hole or be impaled on a branch or something. A dog is a tough critter and will do about anything you can imagine. An athlete is an athlete.

Have you ever had one? They are not good dogs for first time dog owners. If you owned a dog like a German shepherd or a Malanois you will be okay to have one. Mine is a beast. She is not mean, but real sweet with everyone. She cannot scale a tree, but I bounce a tennis ball high, she can jump like eight feet off the ground to grab it. They have a high activity level. So you have to have an active lifestyle. I power walked her once twice around my neighborhood which was five miles. She still could have gone for more. They are working and hunting dogs. They are a little stubborn at first, so good training is necessary.
@heythere69832 жыл бұрын
I exercise daily and can go for miles on runs and walks so I wonder if that’s enough . I always see videos claim just about every breed is high energy so I fee sometimes it’s over exaggerated since it makes it seem only marathon runners can be good owners for most dogs that aren’t tiny or pitbulls, or bulldogs. I’d like a dog to run with and play with for sure. I think if you can get by with power walks maybe long jogs/runs/walks could be good . Do you have an idea of how much time you tend to spend taking your dog out? It does seem these are high energy dogs ‘and probably the highest Iv heard of, more so than huskies but I’d like to ask a genuine owner as opppsed to watch a video and guess .

When I first got my catahoula my back was broken a few months before that (he was my service dog) I took him for a hike when I started walking better and at one point he ran up this creek bank that was probably 20 feet tall-a sheer cliff basically that got carved out by the water that was no longer there. He ran up this thing like a mountain goat, just using tiny ledges and roots, Ive never seen a dog do that in person so I was freaking out expecting him to fall and die. But nah he came down like nothing looking at me like: “smh two legged peasant”

This skill actually wasn't the result of creative breeders who maybe worked a cat in there somehow; it likely came about naturally. Food was often scarce back in the old days, so often the dogs were left to fend for themselves. Out of necessity, these dogs became incredibly versatile, developing not only the aforementioned tree climbing ability but also webbed feet for swimming and extremely high intelligence. You do understand that this 'party trick' is literally what the dog breed was designed to do, right?
@MrGabeismyBabe10 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the concern. I would much rather you error on the safe side, but we watch him carefully. Being a hunting dog, he would climb all day long if we let him. Once when we had someone dog sitting he actually did climb ALL day long. However... This 'party trick' was not taught at all. After we adopted him from the shelter we were walking in the park and all of a sudden he started climbing trees! It freaked us out but some locals introduced us to catahoulas. All I 'taught' him was to wait for me to release him so he doesn't do it unless I say it's okay. We only let him climb about once a week, but it is by far his favorite thing to do. And by the way, 4 years older and he's never once hurt himself or strained his legs. I'm a vet. He's fine. He just loves his life and loves to jump. And still no injuries or arthritis. When he got a bee sting on his paw I didn't let him climb for a whole week and he actually started to get depressed and mope around the house. If I really cared about him then I would let my poor dog do what he loves. His face glows the second I say "wanna go climb a treeee". It's what he looks forward to. The key is to properly warm him up and only let him do 5 or so climbs at a time. But nice job being concerned about his health since his is by far the most spoiled sweet dog in the world haha!
