That rubberized undercoating is death for cars. It traps moisture underneath and corrodes from the inside and you have no idea until it starts falling apart. South Main Auto did a video on this. The only kind of rustproofing you should ever use is the oil based kind. Avoid anything with the rubberized undercoating like the plague.

So true. When Ziebart started, back in the 60s, their product formed a rubber-like skin. Over time, it developed micro-fissures which allowed water in, but did not allow it to escape again. The water remained trapped against the metal, and actually accelerated the rusting process. To be fair, Ziebart has improved massively since then, but I typically choose a liquid spray treatment, such as Krown. I live in the Canadian rust belt, so I do have real world experience, sigh.... 😔
@quentinc12752 жыл бұрын

Missing the front belly pan on the 928. Timing belt is more than 2-3 hours. More like 5 -10 depending on how far you go. Rebuilding the tensioner is an interesting part of the job. Don't lose the spacer (washer) under the tip of the belt tensioner. They tend to fall off when removing the tensioner and go unnoticed on the shop floor. But the belt was done last year. A tension check and adjustment each year would be a good idea. That's relatively easy to do in an hour or so.

Hoovie - you have a great 928 but just be aware there's a risk of frying the LH ECU (fuel injection control unit) when jumping off a donor car. It can be done but the later LH computers (+87 onwards) are particularly sensitive to voltage spikes. Preferred method is to disconnect and put some charge in the battery first, but if stranded do what you gotta do.
@bushwood2 жыл бұрын
Very true statement. I always panicked when my 89 needed a boost. When you have to, make sure the rescue car is turned off. I never fried mine, but did have the ECU rebuilt. Maybe I only toasted it. There is a temperature sensor on top of the engine that caused a power drain issue for me. Made the cooling fans run constantly. Cheap fix.
@TheTardis1572 жыл бұрын
Any original LH2.3 that hasn't been rebuilt is on borrowed time. The factory hybrid tile circuit it has loves to dry out and fail. Multiple people have a workaround for it. But at $600 it isn't cheap. The rest of the computer is fine and doesn't care about voltage spikes, just that one stupid circuit (speaking from experience).
@markedwards48792 жыл бұрын
Check the tension on the rear clamp for where the torque tube connects into the transaxle. The bolt stretches and loses tension, which results in damage to the actual driveshaft and the input shaft on the gearbox. It’s an easy, 2 minute job to check and a cheap bolt to replace fairly regularly as a preventative maintenance item. I drove my 928GT for 16 years and sold it with 424k km on it. Absolutely fantastic car if you keep on top of it.

Beautiful 928! I have an 05 Silverado. Evidently, the original coating on these frames was a wax based material that is supposed to be reapplied whenever it is necessary (according to the dealer). I scraped off the wax and applied black Cosmoline wherever I could, including inside the tubular cross members. I would suggest someone inspect the rear-most cross member for corrosion where the spare tire bracket is attached. Mine failed (it corroded on the top where I couldn't get to it). When it does, the spare will drop out of the truck and drag on the road. The spare is held up with a hoist. The hoist has a "feature" that prevents it from dropping, unless there is a lock that is released on the hoist. This is lots of fun when it happens to you in a rain/snow storm, at night, laying in the mud on the side of the road I had to get mine towed because I didn't know about the lock. There are videos on YT about the hoist and how to modify it to "fix" the lock. Check yours out if you have one...

Truthfully, Hoovie deserves what he has. Many don't but god damn it, he is worthy. There is no other sound on the planet as good as that Ferrari driving home at full song. PS. Did anybody else watching this think about one of those portable battery jump starters many use when their battery tends to run down? Seems like this would be a must have item for a guy like Hoovie. No jab, just stating fact. Many high end cars that aren't drive much tend to have their batteries run down. Surprising he doesn't have a portable battery jump starter he just throws in the trunk when transporting one of this cars that don't fire right up.

I can't help but think that the exhaust being cut off there has something to do with those 2 crossmember being trashed.. condensation or something because the frame looks mint 👌
@BreakerBreaker13202 жыл бұрын
This is a notorious problem with all Silverado frames. You need to do annual upkeep on them by having wax touch ups but those tubes where and are bad frame design because you can’t clean them out properly. My brother’s truck did the same thing and was totaled because the frame damage was that bad. Chevrolet should have a class action against them for this.

It's extremely common for those trucks to rust exactly like that.

This brings back so many memories of my 15 years of 928 ownership. I fitted a battery isolator switch to mine. I now have a Ferrari 308 which is much cheaper to run, but I do still love the 928.

This is a classic reason I will not even consider purchasing a used Northern car, or truck, the salt on the winter roads turns them into rust buckets. Ohhhh no issues with the 928, ouch bet you bit your tung on that one.

Push starting been there done that, It's hard to start in reverse as gearing is too low. Always 2nd gear or higher. My fathers work truck engine got destroyed by co-workers trying to start it in reverse by pushing it with another vehicle, the Toyota Dyna 3L diesel got a broken crank and a dented front.

I used to work for a man who’s family member worked at Hollywood Sports Cars (no longer there) and we would have the pleasure of occasionally taking a Ferrari for the weekend. Those cars were such pleasures. My uncle had two Maseratis and that sedan they made was a monster good time to be in it. I miss those days…such fun!

It's heartbreaking to see how cars in the Midwest rust. I'm happy here in the Pacific Northwest with my 30 yr old non-rusty cars.

Yup shipping is that much. I used to be able to import a container in from Germany to that states for $6-8k and now they are $13k.

Out of all people, you should carry one of those company battery jump starters that also work as a cell phone charger. Fit in the glove box. Also, I would just assume you installed 16 truckle charge leads in your garage, and put quick connect plugs on each battery so when you park it, the battery stays charged. Heck, since the pandemic started, I’ve installed 3 myself!

I have some 928's. Easily one of the most expensive cars to keep running. It's no wonder it never managed to replace the 911. However, when the 928 is set up and running well it's one of the most pleasing cars to drive.

My dad had a 1994 z71 that he took in water up to the hood and plowed snow with it and later used it for work and the framed rusted to much. Didn’t have the time to fix it so he sold it to a buddy who’ll fix it. Pretty good truck

If you think that rattle in the door is bad lol my brothers 97 xk8 clunks rattles shakes and thunks every step of the way from closing a door to hitting it to get to highway speed. but the tops works the engine is strong and the transmission is great.

Ah, memories... I was driving a borrowed VW 1303S Beetle (with an engine that had started life as a 1500, btw), and stopped for petrol. Filled up, good to go...only I wasn't. Turned the key, no reaction. Thankfully, the ground was ever so slightly sloped from the petrol pump and out onto the road. So I was able to get into the car, keep the door open and give a good shove with my foot on the ground, and the car started rolling. I had the engine going before exiting the station.

When the sunny days return, you ought to give us a full garage update. Take 5 videos to go through the entire collection including a drive of each. You won't have to buy anything to make 5 videos or fill the Wizzard's yacht with fuel.

928s. I have owned 4 of them over the years. And in general, you have to work on them about once a month or less if you daily drive them. Parts are high. And they are maintenance pigs. They eat rear tires. Rear tires last about 1 year. In the 4 cam cars, you have to pull the motor to replace the brake vacuum booster. If you ever have a chance, look at the back of the fuse and relay board in the passenger side foot well. Its a mass of all black wires and a nightmare to trace. I had a friend that bought a low mileage 928, and then proceeded to spend $4k fixing electrical gremlins. As a note, the early 4.0 liter motors are non interference and are 8:1 compression. I turbocharged one, and that was fun. With 5 speed cars, the clutch master is near impossible to bleed. Very difficult. The automatic transmissions are bullet proof but you have to fill the reservoir from under the car.
