My Cockatiel, Muffin, Is Blind 😔💔

Muffin had a vet visit. We had Dr. Yee which was great as she was already familiar with Muffin's possible vision issues.
After further testing, Dr. Yee thinks Muffin can only see shadows. Basically, Muffin is blind with little bit of light vision. We do think she can see darker shadows better than light shadows.
Muffin will be in a separate, disability friendly cage. I knew something was off. S(he) never perched properly and would be at the bottom of the cage. With multiple birds, I really dont want Muffin to be hurt. A smaller cage, her weaning cage, is the best option.
We also did a DNA test which Dr. Yee took Muffin to the back to pull a feather. Dr. Yee did even further testing at the back and the tech's and other avian vets were there as well. Muffin is blind.
We did get a weight and Muffin is a healthy 90 grams. I know this wasn't the news many of you were expecting but the good news is that they dont think it will effect her life expectancy in any way. Muffin, other than being blind, is really healthy

I like Dr. Yee, she seen some of my birds. Muffin does not seem blind to me but in general animals with red eyes do not see as well as animals with brown or black or other colored eyes. I have a blind canary and it's obvious he is blind. Muffin is young and young birds have to learn how to navigate when flying and hit walls and windows for a while. My Moustache Parakeet is 13 weeks old now and he still hits walls and many of my other birds did this so wait and see how she hopefully she will get better at flying soon. I have an 11 year old red eyed linnie with vision problems and he does great. He gets around his cage and can fly okay but he has arthritis so he falls alot. Good luck with Muffin. Animals are great at living with disabilitys.

Love of Pets we did a test, she used an equipment (I'm not sure what its called) and Muffin's iris also didn't react to it which is abnormal. Muffin also needs to be cued a lot. In our big cage she gas difficulty perching so she clings on using her beak and would fall from the cage back to the bottom. And overall she has general clumsiness. When we fist went to the vet she was about 5-6 weeks old and we decided to wait. She had difficulty finding the syringe but we thought she might be just a bit slow. We're now certain about her vision. Although Muffin saw one vet, at the back door Muffin saw the tech and two other vets that I also know. They also said she's blind. The good new is that she seems to see some shadow. Mainly darker shadows. So that might be very helpful. Who knows! 🤗

she probably has a mutation that causes her to lack cones, maybe completely or partly, so she can see shapes but does poorly in high light situations. Upside is that the body usually compensates by making more rods than normal, so she would maybe have very good night vision.

Aww poor little muffin. But I’m so glad it won’t effect her life a ton:) also just so you know their are cages online that are longer than they are tall . If you looking for a new cage for her online is a great place to start :)

I took over caring for a blind cockatiel that looks very similar to Muffin a few years ago, after the elderly couple who owned her could not longer keep her in the assisted living facility they moved in to. The thing is, I don't think they realized she was blind. I figured that out on my own and rather quickly after taking possession of her. It was so obvious. It must have something to do with inbreeding and I wonder if there's a higher occurrence of blindness is the white yellowish ones versus the gray ones.

I have exactly the same colored one.And for the first 2,3 years of ownership it was a normal bird, but these days I’m 100 % sure she is at least partially blind on both eyes.It sucks because she seem to be depressed because of that.

I not sure if your bird is depressed. More often than not, birds adapt really well to their vision being poorly. That being said, they do rely a lot on their beaks and getting around. They still very much like foraging still. I would suggest making some toys (a string and stacked cardboards) is a great start! You can also make a small box or tray and add some foraging stuff like crinkle paper, sola, cardboard bits, some millet (will encourage them to forage), and many more!

How beautiful that you take Muffin to the vet , that is beautiful ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ where I live in an Estate where there are plenty other estates as neighbours , everyone cares same way for their pets of all kinds , and if there is a pet who goes missing everyone gets involved , it's mostly a South African trait which is catching on even more to everyone- But I absolutely love Muffin , I would also be very concerned and protective of blind bird , I do love cockatiels they are individuals like any bird , and I love how you have shared about Muffin ,I wish you and Muffin everything of the absolute best 😘😘♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥

I was searching for a cockatiel video about this topic bc I’m pretty sure my cockatiel is blind/bad eyesight as well. It’s so funny and makes me more confident seeing this video bc my bird has such a similar personality and habits your bird does. She probably only sees shadows, doesn’t flinch at things, doesn’t react to me unless she hears me and she sits at the bottom of the cage a lot. Mine is a bit older but this video has helped me a lot. Because Muffin is blind, she relies mainly on her beak and feeling stuff. She actually weaned off formula quicker than Blossom because she was always trying to get a feel for stuff :)

Can Muffin fly? I also have a blind cockatiel, he has cataracts in both eyes. He still tries to fly and then lands on the floor. He actually trusts us, he knows that we will catch him when he falls.

I just agreed to "foster/adopt" a cockatiel who may be blind or impaired somehow, I'm not sure about keeping her, sure that sounds awful, but how long does it take for them to adjust? (she's only 3 months old) She seems to struggle a lot with walking and she tries to fly a lot, I don't want her to get hurt or have a worse quality of life. Thoughts?

you cockatiel being blind does not affect breeding itself but the off-springs are likely to be carriers of genetic mutation that caused your birds blindness. Most vets and breeders would advice against it as its not really looked as morally correct.

I dont know if your still YouTubing but just curious as to how Muffin is doing.I have a Teil thats about 23 with arthritus in one leg.He needs to use his beak to balance himself when he walks but he is the happiest bird with his buddy who is about 21.

You can always try tweaking your birds cage a bit, and considering he is a mature bird, maybe even getting a small cage so he can get around might be in his best interest. I highly suggest flat perches :)
