Interestingly, before the full game was out, Mario's drowning animation was different. When he dies, his body just lays dead and floats up to the surface,even his eyes roll up. They cut that out because it was too dark and I'm glad the one they used for the full game is less dark.

I think they kept the eyes rolling back in his head for the quicksand drown animation. Well, looks like it more accurately if he's facing the camera you can kinda see it. I could be wrong about that so take it with a grain of salt

You lose ten coins if you die. Luckily, you still respawn, even if you have no coins. The coins are your lives. I love Mario when he says, "Oh, ho-ho!"
