I have a really tough time convincing several of my family members that a car is not only a liability (needs money to maintain and repair), but also a depreciating item (going down in value with age and mileage). All those relatives have money trouble and all want to do car lease. I have no debt and have gained a sizable net worth (two houses worth of cash purchase without touching my retirement and emergency funds) with a 9 year old hatchback. This caller's value system is on the opposite end from mine and I don't think he understands what the baby step 2 is about. But boy if you think shifting the paradigm on yourself is hard, try do it on someone else. From my several unsuccessful attempts interacting with my family, it's almost better to just let them go and let them rot. It's like they refuse to dream for a better life and just want to fulfill their craving on what other people consider the successful life now by putting up a fancy facade.
@mingchi18555 жыл бұрын
It's a really sad situation but so true. I think many people here on Dave's channel have similar relatives. Sometimes you just cannot do much but flee. They have all sorts of excuse when borrowing money: "esteem", "ethics", "humanity", "love", "religious believes", etc. In the end they are not only destroying themselves, but also destroying any people who cares about them. Increase income, live below means, have emergency funds, avoid stupid "investments", and most importantly, stop the hope for everything coming to life right now, that 'll just be fine for everybody. But those people won't and instead want other people to pay for their dreams.

I love how he's giving advice on the company's car reimbursement program without first getting any information about the reimbursement program. Like, how do you know the car reimbursement isn't a reimburse up to X amount, instead of a flat reimbursement. In tgat case, he should go buy the most expensive car possible because it's on the company.

He's getting paid $95,000 a year. There is no way that stipend will go up over $500 a month. Even if it did it would be $6,000 a year which will add up to $24,000 in the four years till he gets a new one. The stipend wouldn't get near to covering his car for the time he has with it. Also, Dave only brought up the loss in value only, he didn't account for the gas nor the repairs that he's going to need to maintain the car, which if he got a BMW or some other European car, will add on significantly more to the cost over these four years. Quit trying to justify the actions of stupid people.

I bought my car, new, in 2008. A Kia Spectra. Had maybe 30 miles on it from test driving. Paid it off 1 1/2yrs early. It's now 11yrs old and only has 67,000 miles on it. I drive it every day, have driven it on long road trips. No major issues at all and we do regular maintenance, etc. Excellent on gas! Love, love, love my car. Nothing fancy, but does the job.

I worked for a company with the same 4 model years or less. Half the people were in Honda Civics. Another quarter were in the lowest end Fusion/Mazda6/Altima/Accord. The rest of the office was like this dude with Lexus, BMW, Suburban. I whole heartedly agree with Dave. My company now just wants reliable and I'm driving an 09 Fusion with 71k miles on it.

Before the VW debacle I owned Diesel TDI JETTA. One of the most reliable and fuel mileage car I owned for my taxi business. Finally sold it after 250,000+ miles after little things needed repair. Power train was bullet proof. Diesel cost more than gas cars or trucks but save in many areas.

A company I worked for provided you with a leased car which they paid for. We were given a gas card which could be used at all times. You had to keep strict track of personal and bussiness miles as the personal miles are taxable. You could buy the car at the end of the four year lease if you wanted. That was a great deal. They deducted an additional 100 bucks a month for this deal. That was great.

Got a 1-year-old Honda Prius Hybrid off the lot with 21 miles (it had never been sold off the lot, so a year later, it was substantially discounted). No matter what car you want, wait until it's a year old (but still on the lot, never purchased), and you get thousands of dollars off the MSRP. It's still a brand new car. :-))

Buy an old rental car. I just searched Enterprise site for used cars. Found plenty of 2018 Toyota Camry's with 30-50k for $17500. Drive it for three years and move to the next one.

I bought an old rental car a year ago, 2017 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid with 14,000 miles for $17,000. Idk why he paid like $40,000 for a vehicle he’s just going to have to replace in 4 years anyway (to continue to be eligible for the company stipend).
@mph58965 жыл бұрын
@@mle011 yeah, crazy. In the example I gave, drive the car for 3 years. Sell it once done. If you drive 30k a year that would be like a 2015 Camry with 130k that should be worth around $6-8K. So 10-12k out of pocket for 3 years of depreciation or about $3500 a year.
