My recollection of the movie is that Vinnie noticed there was something odd about the tire tracks after seeing the picture Lisa took as well as another photo. He asks the Sheriff to do the investigation BEFORE Lisa even takes the stand, because the Sheriff comes back out into the hallway to find out why Vinnie wants him to do the search. We have to remember that Vinnie at one time also worked for Lisa's father, so its assumed that Vinnie also has some general automotive knowledge.

The thing I really love about this movie and its powerful statement is that everyone wants the same thing, there is no hidden agenda and while the witnesses didn't help the defense it wasn't malice, it was simply what they thought they saw, it was a real case study with regards the dangers of eye witnesses and expert witnesses. And perhaps most importantly as someone born in England and moving to the US in my 30s it was my introduction to grits(although as I lived in New England instant!!!)

While Lisa gets all the credit for being an expert witness for the boys, you gotta give kudo's to Vinnie for realizing the tire marks couldn't be from a Skylark due to it having a single axle in the first place! And wouldn't he have normally been allowed a recess in order for him to prep Lisa before her testimony? What if she hadn't noticed the same thing? Could he have asked leading questions since the judge did rule she was a "hostile" witness (due to their previous fight), even though she was his witness?

I like how neither the sheriff, the judge, nor the prosecutor are villains. They are all truly committed to justice and the law and think they truly have the right suspects. Their misinterpretations of the defendants' statements fits with the film's larger theme about cultural miscommunication.

“The Verdict” with Paul Newman, 1982. Every performance in this movie is amazing. The film was nominated for five Academy Awards, including Best Actor in a Leading Role (Paul Newman), Best Actor in a Supporting Role (James Mason), Best Director (Sidney Lumet), Best Picture, and Best Adapted Screenplay (David Mamet). The American Film Institute ranks it #4 in the best legal films of all time.

You stole my thunder. The Verdict is not just about a trial, it’s also a story of personal redemption, overcoming seemingly unbeatable obstacles, and legality vs. morality. Best line of dialogue: After a biased judge repeatedly interrupts Paul Newman’s questioning of a witness, Newman says, “With all due respect your honor, if you’re going to present my case, do it right.”
