You are very inspirational for young/new teachers. We get into this business of education because our heart guides us in that direction. You could say that it's our calling in life. Unfortunately, the public school system is broken! I survived for 22 years teaching in Southern California. However, I can honestly say to the new teachers that your dreams will be crushed within the first 3-4 years of teaching. It's heartbreaking, but it's true! The good news... It's not too late to reinvent yourself and parlay your teaching skills into something truly wonderful.😇

I am sorry to hear how you were treated unprofessionally by other colleagues. Hurting people hurt others, and it was terrible that you had to experience such challenges. I really do hope that this new path will give you peace. Thank you for your video presentation, Bre. Take care.

I totally identify with just knowing when it's time to leave. My work/life balance was totally out of whack. It was affecting my health, my time with with family, my mental health. I feel so relieved I am not going back. I have started walking again and gardening, things I had no time for before. Thank you for sharing. It helps to know we're not alone in our experiences. I feel it's a loss for the students, as well, to lose good teachers like yourself. But the price we pay if we stay is just too high.

My 1st, 3rd, and 8th year of teaching were super stressful. The ones in between were pretty good...and the big difference was my class sizes were smaller those years... no special needs or IEPs- other than speech, no major behaviors; and these years happen to be all right before curriculum adoption years. Once a currculum is a few years old you find your rhythm with it or stop using it or adapt it....cause they stop caring about staying on top of us following the curriculum and actually let us use our autonomy in the classroom and step outside the box. We also got a new vice principal my second year or around then I believe. And then another new vp my 5th year I think. New vice principals overseeing are the best cause they are still full of life, believe in you, and aren't beat down yet by the higher ups and stress. My 8th year, all hell broke loose. But I had already known ahead it would be my last year cause we had had our first child and the plan was for me to be a sahm ❤ perfect timing! I got out right before covid etc.

How did that moment of clarity just come all of the sudden after all that time?

I believe I subconsciously knew I needed a change but I wasn't being honest with myself. I had a lot of limiting beliefs around wanting to leave like being a bad person or leaving the kids that need me behind - I was working with a 1:1 mentor at the time and I woke up one morning and finally knew what my answer was - I wanted to leave. It was a huge relief when I finally admitted aloud as well.

I work in Georgia. I had a career before teaching and thought that it could be better. It's not always. I focus on kids, too. It upsets me when others don't look at their best interests. I agree with most of what you say. Thank you for saying it. 😊

I am glad to here you enjoyed substituting. I was a substitute in between years 3 and 4 of teaching, and it was so fulfilling, even more than teaching. Once I complete this upcoming school year ( my sixth year), I think I might go back and substitute for a while before fully leaving teaching.

Yes I agree. SO much less stress on the body knowing that you walk in and leave not carrying the burden and weight. I can't believe how heavy teaching was on my body.

I don't understand people who look down on those who take days off. They're there for a reason! We can't fill from empty cups! As long as we prepare necessary materials for a sub, there shouldn't be an issue

The teacher’s lounge could be one of the most toxic places. Luckily, I found my own small group of teacher friends in the school. Sorry, it was such a toxic place for you. The teacher who told you, you were pretty but owned the place was probably jealous.

That's amazing. In my whole career, I found 2 teachers I connected with across 2 states, 5 grade levels, and 4 different schools LOL

Question for you or other teachers: Do you have to teach what some other governing body tells you to teach? For anyone who is a teacher and is “awakened”, I could see that being an issue trying to do your job knowing some of what you have to teach is BS.
@HighVibeTeaching

I have never been told I had to teach on "awakened" standards. I know teachers make the choice to focus on topics such as that. I have taught in California and Nevada and it was an issue to where I had to teach those topics (forced). That topic is not CommonCore State Standards. But also understand that teachers can mix these topics with reading and writing standards the same way I desire to around the topic of financial literacy. There is freedom there from what I experienced but I was never forced. I had a couple meetings around if we had a student who needed support on gender identity, but that was the farthest extend of it.

If these parents don't want their kids listening to your podcast then that's on them to prevent it from happening,🤷‍♀️ like do these parents complain every time they see something that's not child appropriate 🤣

Yeah it's a very strange line that been crossed over and over again. I do my part of marking the episodes explicit, so with proper settings, children should not have access to my podcast where I curse sometimes 🙃 But it still came to my attention by my admin and I'm like 🙃🙃🏃🏼‍♀️🏃🏼‍♀️ Gotta go!
