@Ducky3D CyclesX uses Adaptive Sampling. Even if you set 1024 or 4096 samples, the noise threshold will control your rendering time by adapting sample count. I like keep the max samples to 4096, noise threshold mostly to 0.5 and reduce like 0.2 or 0.1 on final render. Do a render and you will see rendering stops at around 20-30 samples for a transparent cube+sphere..

Other stuff I do to my startup file: 1) I have a "default room" containing a decent starting point for the kind of projects I need to do for work. Often using materials that don't require any UVs, such as different types of walls and floors etc. Comes with a couple of window and door variations as well as some frequently used interior lighting assets. 2) I'll link my material and math library files so I don't have to attach it manually to every project I work on. Fonts and texture paths, and asset libraries are also setup in prefs. Why skip it? 3) In every workspace tabs property, I'll drag the color management field to the top and expand it. 4) The world material contains some dummy nodes I often adjust globally; like "lightstrip intensity", "monitors and display passthroughs" and "exposure compensation" (used by my monitor and display assets, I need them to come out at a consistent brightness regardless of what exposure setting I'm using to get a good lighting exposure). 5) The world material will also contain an RGB mix node containing my white neutralization color and a somewhat desaturated version of it. I copy RGB of this to CM curves. 6) I make sure properties/scene tab I export all the channels I *may* need; ob and mat id, cryptomatte, mist, denoising data and so on. 7) Setup light groups in my startup so I can control all displays, interior lights, and environment light individually in post. Not in yet, but it's on my todo list. 8) Setup decent Fast GI approximation values to fill in the darks (just a very tiny bit required), if denoising messes things up. Say 1-2m distance and 0.01 in factor. Then turn it off. 9) Addons I use: All the extra objects ones, some of the edit ones (looptools and F2), some frequently used import/export ones (incl images as planes, dxf/fbx import), copy attributes menu, and sun position which I use in every project. 10) I have also setup world with a default HDR, matched its sun position to some date and place on sun position addon. Now I can rotate my sun position addon northing and use the same rotation value in one of the HDR rotations and they will always match up. There is also a HDR scaler (IBLs are clipped and problematic) so that the default sun position and elevation creates *about* the same result using Nishita Sky with and without sundisk. Sometimes I need the HDR to reflect, even if Nishita does most of the lighting. I prefer it this way as Nishita clears up pretty nicely. It's not "do it my way or your way", but rather have people think about how they setup their Blender if they happen to use it a lot for work related projects. Used in a professional studio setup, you may even need to set it up specifically to match a certain workflow and pipeline system.

@Ducky3D, 5:19 what about those of us who specialize in photorealistic ArchVis using Cycles? Would the sampling settings still be that low, or should they be higher for archvis? (I'm one of the "year and a half in" Blender artists, so still learning.)
@ajtatosmano2 Жыл бұрын
For interiors it's very low. For most of the time I enable viewport denoise, but set the starting pass to 25 or 50, depending on the scene. After I am done with most of the work I need to get the final look I will disable viewport denoising, set the noise threshold lower and use the viewport with the render region feature. but this is just for tweaking the already choosen textures. For light paths in the viewport 2 is enough for glossy and diffuse light, but I leave the transmission and transparent settings high. For the final tweaking I will crank up the numbers. I don't have a particularly strong pc, so these setting are useful. I don't use fast GI approximation because it changes the lighting too much. But the other settings are fine for most of the times, because composition and lighting is what makes a good shot. Texture wise when you lay down color and roughness you can already see if it fits the scene. And to get the realistic archvis quality you have to use higher settings in the end.

Why do you use both GPU and CPU? I've been reading a lot on line that says you shouldn't do that
@TheDucky3D2 жыл бұрын
I haven’t done a heavy amount of research into it. I’ve heard here and there that you should, and other places say that you shouldn’t. For me I found no issue with using both but it’s really about what works for you
@juliusfucik40112 жыл бұрын
It depends on your combination of CPU and GPU and scene. I have done testing with a dozen scenes using a 5950X and an 3090. The 3090 is so fast, your CPU will always be last to finish. Switching to GPU only is faster in all scenes in this case. However, if you have an older GPU and a CPU with fewer, but faster cores, depending on the exact hardware, sometimes it can get slightly faster. I have only ever tested this on a 1060 6GB and a 2700X. The 2700X is fast enough to actually contribute before the GPU is finished. Someone out there must have done more extensive tests and documented them online.

Cool! Also mind "Fast GI approximation" ;) Btw, do you have any optimization tips for animation? I have a fairly large Scene with two very low poly characters interacting. Even though I disabled everything except the characters plus went into local mode, timeline scrubbing is ridiculously slow to the point you're animating practically blind. If I copy my characters to a fresh Blender file, of course it's fast as should be. But this ain't practical and often causes disruptions... (I'm on a 5950X / 3090 rig)
