Mike Garson on piano is my favorite Bowie collaborator. He elevates every song, complementing Bowie’s musical sensibility so well.

Bowie was EVERYTHING - he was my LIFE, my whole being. When I was 15-16-17 , Diamond Dogs Album was the first album I bought when I was 14 in 1974.

Bowie WAS cool!! And always so charismatic on stage! You are drawn into his spell from the moment he takes the stage and it’s hard to look away. He’s mesmerizing. His band was always top musicians too. Mike Garson, the pianist, was classically trained and has been with him since the 70s. Gail Ann Dorsey, the bassist, did an incredible Freddie Mercury impersonation with Bowie on the Queen/Bowie collaboration, Under Pressure. You NEED to watch it. I’m not sure who else was in this tour band but he would often call promising musicians to play with him, think Stevie Ray Vaughn, for example. Peter Frampton, Carlos Alomar, Luther Vandross, Earl Slick, Mick Ronson, Nile Rogers, Rick Wakeman, Dennis Davies, and so many more all played in his band at some time or other.

Garson may have been classically trained, but he was a jazz pianist. He's brilliant.

You are so right. Bowie didn’t have a Dean Martin voice but everything he did was mesmerising and drew you in. An amazing talent and far far ahead of his time.

First time I have heard this version of the song and I love it! The Ziggy Stardust live version was 1973 and the whole concert performance was captured by well-known filmmaker D A Pennebaker. This 97 version sounds quite a bit different as David has changed some phrasing of the notes and certainly his voice sounds older, but that feels entirely appropriate. Of course the incomparable Mike Garson adds a further dimension with his beautiful playing - no one can free-form like this man! The other song in his catalogue where David vocally soars like this is Wild is The Wind from his Station To Station album - definitely worth a listen!

Thanks for getting me more into David Bowie. I really liked the jazz, the depth of feeling, the piano carrying through, and Bowie's interpretative voice. Just admire your coverage.

I really love this jazzy version of My Death but also love the Ziggy live version. Fyi. Ziggy Stardust was a studio album that came out in 1972 and propelled Bowie to stardom (in the UK). Loosely based around an alien who comes to save the earth, which only has 5 years before extinction, by becoming a pop star but gets corrupted by stardom, so that his band and fans turn on him. Bowie 'became' the Ziggy persona before he 'killed' him off live on stage. The live documentary film was of this whole concert but was released a few years later after bowie had changed personas.

Well his half brother and major musical inspiration Terry Burns killed himself at the train station at the end of my road when I was 5. He was a patient at the Cane Hill mental asylum that was opposite my bedroom window, in the distance for over 25 years, before it was knocked down about 10 years ago. Morbid comment. Sorry..

Love your reactions. Doing the Ziggy Stardust album sometime would be good for all involved. "My Death" was written by Jacques Brel who Bowie admired.

_Ziggy_ _Stardust_ _and_ _the_ _Spiders_ _from_ Mars_ documentary is definitely worth a watch, and the soundtrack album is great, too. Hard to find, though, and I'm hoping the new Bowie film will encourage a restoration and re-release. Brel was fantastic and unequaled, as was Bowie, but Brel was dismissive of Bowie and refused to meet him. Brel's interpretation was quite different from Bowie's, and I wonder if Brel ever bothered to listen to Bowie's.

@@WelpHereWeAreOnKZbin I love it when you do Bowie. I don't know if you know, Ziggy Stardust movie and soundtrack are not the same as the album "The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and The Spiders from Mars" which was released in 1972.

This is my favourite rendition of this song... while I would say nothing against any of the superb artists who have worked with Bowie in the past, whenever Bowie and Mike Garson ( and earlier Mick Ronson) take the stage, magic happens ! Jacques Brel a Belgian artist wrote the original song as well as "Port Of Amsterdam" which Bowie also covered. Brel is well worth checking out as he was an excellent stage performer who wrote some fantastic music ( though mostly in French) . "Une île" is my favourite

Thank you to the algorithm that made it possible to watch good videos, I hope that you will succeed as you have worked hard for your dreams. It's a morning when something good seems to happen today if you open the KZbin window. I was hesitant about whether to open the KZbin window, and if I hadn't seen your video in Hamat, I could not have felt another great joy. Whether it's a coincidence or a relationship according to the algorithm, your video appears on my KZbin window, and I'm watching your video like a dream. The moment I saw it for the first time, it made my heart flutter. As I watch your wonderful videos, I keep falling in love with them. Thank you so much for watching your valuable videos on such a fine day with clouds floating in the blue sky. As you try to achieve success on KZbin, there are only a lot of difficulties, but you can only achieve it if you always make a firm resolve that you will do it again someday. An unknown and mysterious algorithm led me here. It is a very good video just to watch. Watching your video that feels like it was made with sincerity and unsparing sincerity, it makes my heart flutter because I have a feeling that I will soon receive a lot of love. I liked your video, especially since it made a deep impression on me. While I was living, there was KZbin, which gave me another happiness. However, working on KZbin videos is like standing alone in a windy expanse. Your videos have the ability to instantly make them attractive.

All comments no information. - This isn't a Bowie-Song, the song is a Jacques Brel-Chanson made into musical-kitsch-musical (Eric Blau) and taken on by Bowie in his Ziggy-Time. - By the way: J. Brel maybe a guy to check out - yeah it's french, but this guy died the greatest deaths on stage, he gave his soul on every live performance! Nothing in the world like it today (ever?). If interested just tip Brel+Olympia into the field for searching. - This version is a little bit to AOR with all this jazzy shit, Santa Monica 72 he tears his soul out. This version is just sophisticated death ;-) - (ok, it's a nice version, but it has nothing existential (Camus and stuff) like the Ziggy-Version). - Brel-Original: kzbin.info/www/bejne/l4uThpWsoN1pjLs - Brel live: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y4uThnp9q8dnqbM

This was one of Bowie's translations and reworkings of this Jacques Brel classic. The earlier performances of "My Death" better showed Bowie's vocal range. By 1997 Bowie's chain-smoking habit had severely degraded his voice and he resorted to typical tricks artists use to get through parts that are no longer within reach. He quit smoking not long after this, and amazingly recovered most of his former range by the time of his _Reality_ album and tour. This is still a good performance, nonetheless.

Actually, Bowie quit smoking in 1990 when he met Iman, and then married in 92'. He smoked off and on after that, and who knows when he quit for good. He always leaned more in the baritone range, but used his higher range mainly in his Ziggy days. He was always changing his voice, music, etc. I love the Ziggy version too, but wanted to show Ryan and Nathan a different version.

According to Bowie, he quit after the birth of their daughter, which would put it around 2000. I suspect that neither he nor Iman wanted her exposed to 2nd hand smoke. Not complaining that this one was chosen at all - it is a great song.

@@kevind4850 He also said he quit in 90'. Also there's videos of him in early 2000 or so, smoking at concerts/interviews in France and or Germany. So who knows. I'll always love his voice and am happy that u do too.

Sorry guys don’t like that version at all. I’d highly recommend the live version from the Ziggy Stardust live album. This didn’t work for me, the tempo, piano, even his vocal wasn’t quite right. Too jazzy for me, lost all its soul.
